  2. Do You Have a Preferred Perspective for Games?

I guess it's technically called Ryan North's To Be or Not To Be, a Choose Your Own Adventure style game where you play through Hamlet as a selection of characters, with art by Kate Beaton amongst others. I'll have to check out Choice of Games! Thanks for the req.

Man do I wish any theater near me offered assigned seating without 3D. Beyond the annoyance of having to wear two pairs of glasses, my 3D experience is fifteen minutes of annoying flickering and then I stop even noticing it :\
  7. I want to start a Fury Road Rewatch podcast where I just rewatch Fury Road every week and talk about it again for 1 hour.

Considering the Warboys were designed to look indistinguishable and uniform, I loved the little character moments a lot of them got. I really appreciated Furiosa's relationship with her 2nd in command Warboy (credited as Prime Imperator in the credits, did I mention the names of the characters in this movie are great?) He clearly respected and trusted her, they worked closely together when fighting the Buzzard raiders and his outrage and sense of betrayal was palpable when he figured out what she was up to. Nux's arc as well. He wasn't just a faceless berserker, but someone looking for meaning and to make something of his life before he died which, by his own reckoning, was going to be soon regardless. When Max and Furiosa are fighting, he helps Max by grabbing the bullets clearly eager to please. When he thinks they've secured the wives for Joe, he's talking to Max like a comrade. He isn't just a killer who turned a new leaf, he was always looking for friends and connections and meaning anywhere he could. The fact that he found it in Joe's cult, that ALL the Warboys and the Warpups are being raised in this toxic environment is tragic, but also gives you hope that they can all be something better if given a chance. The fact that the Warboys seem to have a genuine bond of friendship and respect and a collective desire to belong and be recognized humanizes them just enough to ground their absurdity in reality. They erase their individuality and humanity but they're not indistinguishable or completely inhuman. They're not all just baby eating monsters. Well, they ARE baby eating monsters, but not JUST baby eating monsters. And there isn't one second of explicit exposition telling you any of this. It's a quality that I loved about Road Warrior and I'm so glad George Miller didn't forget about it. Holy shit you guys, the Warboys are GamerGate D:

I feel like fashion has a similar relationship with the tech industry as religion does: something that's plays a deeply important role in a lot of peoples lives, but not in the lives of the general population of the tech industry (ie: young, white, middle class guys). The second paragraph stood out to me: She phrases this in such a way that I suspect the response it is supposed to elicit is "yes, your are describing getting ready for a special occasion, like you do". The closest thing the process she's describing I've ever experienced is a recurring anxiety dream I've had over the years. I've literally never put this much thought into anything I've ever worn, including the wedding ring I wear every day. This isn't something I'm bragging about, I just cannot muster the interest. This is not a good quality to have but I suspect it is not unique amongst guys in tech. I wear jeans or cargo shorts and a short sleeved collared shirt or a t-shirt because I don't have to wear anything dressier and I'm perfectly happy to have that decision made for me. Denim / khaki and a short sleeved shirts are affordable, comfortable in a climate controlled environment where I'll primarily be working at a computer or attending meetings, and practical in that they offer a full range of movement and don't require any special consideration when wearing a jacket if it rains or something. They do all the things I need cloths to do. Of course, we're not just talking about clothing, we're talking about Fashion. In Fashion you Wear (with a capital W) a statement. You communicate what you want people to know about who you are, where you stand and how you feel. Communicating through fashion is as rich as any other language, but it largely falls on deaf ears when it comes to tech guys. Tech guy clothing is not Fashion. Tech guy clothing is basically the fashion equivalent of atheism. Most tech guys don't Wear anything the way they don't Believe in anything, which isn't the same as wearing or believing in nothing. Coming into games as a fashion concious 19yo must be a hell of a culture shock. Moving into games after living in a monastery would probably be similar. How could entering a culture where something you value and which deeply informs your world view is largely absent, if not outright mocked, be otherwise? How could abandoning it to fit in be anything but damaging? And of course, like religion, there is a fair share of people in tech who seethe with a gleeful disdain for fashion, who consider an interest in it a failing of character and are very willing to pontification these views at the slightest provocation. Fashion has a lot of cultural heritage and a VERY significant relationship with patriarchy; it is considered feminine and, as such, unsuitable for a man to express outward interest in. It is impossible to separate a disdain, or even a lack of interest, for fashion from patriarchal influences. I acknowledge that my gut reaction is not free of this influence. When she was approached by the "seasoned veteran", I read the interaction as a guy who has no idea how to parse fashion doing it best not to make people upset for reasons he doesn't understand. Of course this interaction is loaded with significance and emotion beyond the "seasoned vet's" ken. It's the thoughtless harm commonly inflicted by unconscious sexism. This is the meat of the issue right here. Tech in general is largely a monoculture that values nothing it can't make on its own. It can only be improved by new ideas and the guys involved need to learn to value things beyond the ability to output work that resembles only other work in the same industry. That being said: She's perfectly free to express herself in tech. Everywhere I've worked there have always been people who broke the mold, not always women, not always artists, and, in my experience, they've always contributed above and beyond the "output" they're been assigned to produce along with their fellows. I and most other a-fashion-ist guys, given the opportunity, are happy to work with people with interests and experiences beyond our own. But I'm still going to wear jeans and plaid.

Was it? It was 14A in Canada and that usually translates to PG13.Some of the hits (including some important ones) seemed weirdly cut and framed, like it was done in a hurry in post without the option of reshoots.
  12. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Is there secrect depth to Pixel Dungeon that I'm just not seeing? I give it another go every time it comes up around here and I just don't get the acclaim it gets. The first couple of floors is always just "push through monsters and hope for good rolls" bit then I get bad rolls and die.

The Road Warrior was my Star Wars when i was a kid and, despite myself, I was immediately hyped for Fury Road from the frist tailer and holy cow did it live up to my unreasonable expectations. What a goddam miracle spectacle. My only niggles are a couple of clumsy PG-13ifying cuts and pans that I'm hoping will be corrected for the home release. I'm going to find out of you can wear out a bluray disc when it's available.

It's a shame most of The Summit's finals have been total stomps and a ton of games have been less than 30min (though that seems pretty common in the new meta). EG v C9 and Secret v Vici are the only series that have gone to 3 games. As per usual, EG is the most fun to watch and will end up playing twice as many games as any other team to ultimately come in second EG and Vici will be playing to get to the grand finals with Secret. EG has a habit of losing to the top tier teams in tournament settings and then beating them if the play again later, and they've already been beat by Secret in the Semifinals. However, even though EG and Vici were in the same group at the start of the LAN, they didn't end up playing due to the group stages double elimination format with no finals, so this'll be the first time they've played. Exciting Also, Puppey keeping it real. Bugatti's make you soft!

The following is my opinion of what white guys can best do in the face of problematic media within a capitalistic society. Ultimately, I don't think problematic content is included or removed from anything based on some board room algebra as much as it is based on the attitudes and experiences of those in power to make the decisions. They might point to this study or that focus group after the fact, but, in my experience working in games, the men responsible for the output of culture producing businesses go with their own instincts before any formula or trend report (the actuaries and number crunchers go into finance, not games or movies or TV). And the attitudes and instincts of those men are formed by their past experiences and exposure to ideas. That's why it is so important to boost the work of alternative voices and, marginalized people. You'll do far more good boosting (and financing) progressive games you think are cool or recommending progressive books to your friends than you will abstaining from watching the mainstream-est of mainstream shows like Game of Thrones. Not because it will change the world overnight, but because it positions those people to do more work, to gather more influence, to inspire MORE good work, to affect MORE people and to shape the views and politics of the next generation of show runners and writers and studio heads. Follow your conscience, listen to what other people have to say but don't pat yourself on the back if your fight for progress begins and ends with loudly denouncing media that you think someone else might fight offensive. Guaranteed, for the next ten years we're going to see a lot more po-faced, sexposition filled period dramas regardless of the good progressive criticism aimed at them. The people who will be in a position to call the shots are either not paying attention or don't care. And the people holding the purse strings DEFINITELY don't care. BUT, if you boost the thoughtful work of good critics and support the work marginalized people, in 20 years or 30 years (once the old people are dead) that can change.

I just assumed the narrator was Mario... Seriously though, I was SCRUTINIZING these pics to figure out what was wrong Honestly, I've never been great at catching stuff like this. I wonder why? Out of curiosity, how were you guys taught to read? I'm fairly certain I never did the hard core phonics thing, just sight word learning. I rarely if never find myself sounding out a word in my head or even following a sentence linearly.

Considering money is considered speech in the states now, expanding "freedom" is not an inaccurate descriptor of American foreign policy.
