Gabe Newell and J J Abrams once hacked my computer and recorded me playing HL2 and then used my gameplay as examples to talk about storytelling in games, i know that sounds insane, but i distinctly remember doing exactly what happened in that video, because it had been a while since i had played HL2 and i was intentionally playing it in a way that breaks the narrative and just making my own fun, i had completed HL2 multiple times before but not since there had been achievements and stat tracking in steam. I can't prove that is what happened, but what do you guys think about the ethics of game developers secretly watching their customers playing their games?

ahh so that is what the dick wolf thing is about, if merchandise/cartoons you made went on to created a group called "team rape" why would you regret taking the merchandise away, regretting that a joke was interpreted badly (not realising it would offend) and caused controversy should have been the regret, because it is quite easy to offend people with jokes, but once you know you did offend someone you should take it back, especially if your supporters create a group that harrases anti-rape activists, personally if i ever did anything that resulted in a pro-rape group forming, i would regret that forever

drawing with the mouse takes some getting used to, when i do i take "the draw line - ctrl+z" until acceptable approach osmosisch keep going, i don't know how to say it correctly, but your doodles put no pressure on other people to spend hours on a perfect drawing, much like most of my doodles

well thanks for an actual sensible discussion on the subject SiN, and i agree. one thing i have to say though, i am Gabe Newell, and i made HL3 years ago, i just didn't sell it or release it because i am already rich enough, plus people have been installing steam in anticipation of HL3 for years, while in the meantime buying game$

well as i said i know it's sounds crazy and i know i can't prove it, but lets just say you give me the benefit of the doubt, what do you think about a developer doing this (secretly observing players) as a research tool for making better games?

i did exactly that not long before this presentation, i could go through second by second and tell you exactly why i did the things i did, this is the kind of thing i remember exactly

totally, it was the matrix game i had been waiting for (it was a bit buggy and had some weird sections) it was about being Neo and that is awesome, plus the fighting styles were really fun to play, those other games sucked though

it genuinely is a great documentary, you get exactly what you want out of a documentary, the truth edited in an interesting and informative way

yeah it's the nickel and dime generation of games developing, it makes me sick, i would literally (meaning literally) puke all over the guys with these ideas to make my opinion clear

making something so long, complicated and boring that it isn't worth reading and if you don't agree you don't get to play is coercion your honor

but isn't it unethical to watch people play the game without permission? it's like spying, and the fact is that even if you watch someone play a game you won't understand why they are doing the things they do, all you can do is put your own interpretation on what they are doing, and that interpretation is going to be biased to your own thoughts, i didn't play the game that way the first time i played it, i usually don't intentionally try and break the illusion of actually being in the game the first time i play, it is just because i had played it multiple times including multiple garry's mod playthroughs that i was messing around, ignoring the dialogue and throwing things at the characters

i will play it (when it comes to PC) before i make a final judgement on it, but the fact that some plants are only available if you pay money has basically made my decision for me, plants Vs zombies is an incredibly easy game, the fun in it was designing a defence from the zombies, in fact it is most fun when your design isn't about super zombie killing efficiency but more about trying out new designs and tactics that just about do the job, it is more about creativity and variety than gaming efficiency, and getting new plants added to the fun in the design, if the game didn't have these micro transactions and was just a real game that you buy it would still have been about that, but because of the micro transactions it is a game about resisting the temptation to make the game easy buy cheating (i mean microtransactions) and not spending the in game coins to save real money.
