Idle Thumbs 122: Mario's Picnic
thestalkinghead replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
i believe we are the most critical of the things we love and feel are important, and i listen with that in mind, and in the end if i feel that certain criticisms made are not important to me i can ignore them, and if i agree with them i agree, i listen to the podcast because i like it, so don't worry too much about it (that wasn't sarcastic or ironic) -
Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!
thestalkinghead replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in Video Gaming
even though i joined the Broken Age party late (humble bundle), i had watched all of the videos and lurked the forums a bit before the announced split, so the decision to split the game seemed understandable to me, but if all you knew was that it made 3 million in the kickstarter and then it was going to be split into 2 parts i can see why that would sound bad. -

apologies are hard, but i think something like a face to face interview on film would be a goos idea

i see where you're coming from, but that would take very a careful construction of the joke, because in the contexts of a joke the perpetrator could be seen as a joke eg. "you silly old rapist, you gone and dun it again" and would still diminish the horrific nature of a rapist, maybe it's not impossible to make a "good" rape joke but it's very hard
-
i think the general idea behind not making rape jokes is that making rape jokes turns the whole idea of rape into not such a bad thing, it could make people have the mindset of "rape, lol" when really the only association there should be of rape is "rape, how horrific" and i think this is what needs to be made clear to PA

i don't really want to get into a debate about the definition of mainstream, but if the news is about whether gay marriage should be allowed, i wouldn't consider that mainstream, mainstream marriage isn't talked about like that and i did say " a lot of the problems that are happening right now are a result of it becoming more mainstream" so i agree it is becoming mainstream, but it isn't quite there yet

Idle Thumbs 122: Mario's Picnic
thestalkinghead replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
you were worried people took your criticism of games too seriously, and i made a bad joke to reassure you, which was bad (i just typed it as i was listening so i didn't really think about it) -
pshh, i bet she doesn't even think Star Wars is the absolute super best thing in the world that will and has ever have happened and therefore she can't be a real geek

yeah sure a polite and reasoned argument can still make people angry, but i mean intentionally trying to make people angry, like name calling.

the thing is that feminist and LGBT issues aren't mainstream, obviously there are big communities about these issues, but as far as a lot of people are concerned feminism is either the suffragettes or something that happened in the 80s, and LGBT groups are a mystery, and a lot of the problems that are happening right now are a result of it becoming more mainstream, so it will take tolerance from both sides to properly educate people, people do change their minds with the right approach, and the best thing to do it to try and work out what the best approach is, i don't really know what the best approach is, but getting angry or making other people angry isn't the best approach in my opinion

it's cool chris, we don't listen or care about what you say -
it's horrible reading things like this, but it just makes me want to live in a world where i am not perceived as a potential rapist, and i think that is a good enough reason for men to want to change things

this is a bit like the debate about boycotting the russian winter olympics because they are anti-gay

I'm the biggest nerd because i don't want to tell you how big of a nerd i am

i think we often know why we like games/films/books etc. but certain aspects are to personal or to complicated to explain, so we generally talk about things that are easy to explain or things we don't like, because talking about personal reason why we like something has no relevance to other people, even if we are purely stating our opinion we generally try to state it in a way that other people would understand, so it is our opinion buy filtered through a broad understanding filter.

it may not sound to great to say that it would take men to stop sexism, it sort of sounds like backwards non progressive thinking, but if someone doesn't respect the opinions of women they aren't going to listen to women, so it wouldn't matter how balanced, well thought out and intelligent an argument is it just wouldn't be listened to. i think this is why penny arcade is so annoying to people right now, because if Mike Krahulik had said he made a mistake and that everybody harassing the women that had campaigned against him were dicks, instead of cheers he may have made quite a few people in the audience rethink their opinions.
-
i have been thinking for a while now that a way to stop sexism/mysoginism online and in the gaming culture would be to get people that men respect to say how wrong it is, imagine your hero/idol or someone you look up to telling you that you are an asshole for doing what you are doing, i think the message would get through a lot better if the person telling you about these issues didn't have to earn any respect because the respect was already there. add that to what Codicier just said about getting some perspective from a few brave victims (maybe even heros interviews victims) and i think there would be a strong basis for change.

it's hard to tell why we like the things we like without an in depth personal analysis of our entire life, in short you could just say GTA has the special secret ingredient that saints row doesn't have. there are some thing which you could say were objective like the "polish" of the game, but really all reviews are subjective, just like the appreciation of any art form
