i got this with the humble bundle, and i quite liked it, i do think it would have been better if you could walk faster (because going the wrong way is very punishing) and a jump button would have been good at least at the beginning, but i got quite immersed in it, the subtitles actually scared me more than once and made me jump because sometimes they are very sudden and i was in hyper observation mode, the voice acting was very good and the depressing tone actually made me there should have been credits at the end because i didn't know what to do or if the game had broken, i think this is a good start to a new type of game, that in the future with more budget behind it could be more appealing to more people and have a great impact on people and storytelling in games and i think looking at this game as the start of something good rather than the best of what this type of game can offer is a good way to approach the game, i think more interaction (or any interaction) would have been good, but it would be hard not to have interaction that makes it seem like a game type thing, so i guess it's good they didn't try that for the first game.

how did you guys not know it was a zombie game? maybe there has just been a lot of specifically targeted marketing because i heard about this game on the walking dead game forums, i guess it was probably put there by sneaky marketing guys

Games Owned to Games Played For A Decent Amount of Time Ratio
thestalkinghead replied to Patrick R's topic in Video Gaming
241 games on steam (http://steamcommunity.com/id/thestalkinghead/games?tab=all ) , top 50 all over 4 hours played (top 10 over 35 hours), next 50 all over an hour played, next 50 all over 0.5 hours played, next 50 not very long then i have some it says i have never played, but they are either ones i got in a package, ones i got before steam tracked anything like time played and some i have played but not on steam (try before you buy or i own the disc or i own it not on steam and it later gets added to steam), i generally play the game i just bought and i have only been buying games on steam the past 2 years or so (it took me a long time to believe it wouldn't just go away) but I'm not a completionist i play a game until i am bored with it, but the good thing about steam is that i don't have to search through hundreds of actual disks to find the game if i have an urge to play a game and i don't have to find patches so i have re-bought quite a few just for convenience, basically steam is only a small section of my gaming experience so it isn't that accurate and some records are just wrong for some reason, maybe ofline play??? -
Double Fine - Kickstarter - MASSIVE CHALICE
thestalkinghead replied to melmer's topic in Video Gaming
i depends on the project as i said the kickstarter model is a good one, but it isn't perfect for everything, one problem comes if you want to make something big budget and you get only get 90% of your goal it counts as it failing, or if is a product that gets manufactured it is usually cheaper the more you make so not having a hard goal could be useful because you can't budget it until you know how many you will get manufactured and the pledge categories would be the estimated price. -

i can't hear one word in that song, one of my favorite radiohead songs is Street Spirit (Fade Out) and basically even though i have listened to it like hundreds of times the only words i can hear are "bearing down on me" "fade out" and a few others, he could hum the whole time or just make sounds and it would be just as good -

everyones is good, and its good that everyone has their own perspective on things, why try and personally insult people? saying that though BonnieDowling's mum is a mess and talks to much .... in bed -
Double Fine - Kickstarter - MASSIVE CHALICE
thestalkinghead replied to melmer's topic in Video Gaming
well i wouldn't back something i didn't think would get funded, i think this whole crowd funding thing is still in it's infancy, the kickstarter model is a good one but the time limit and the hard line of successful funding (reaching the goal) are problems, you could have different models like where you set a really high goal and if it doesn't match the goal in time you make the product a lower budget product, or for some things you could just have no time limit and no hard goals. i think crowdfunding is the future and more businesses will be making things on demand rather than making the thing then creating the demand, all we need next are replicators then nothing will ever be made that isn't already paid for -

it's not necessarily about the amount of money it's the psychological commitment to something that may not happen, so the more likely it is to actually happen the easier it is to commit to it -
Double Fine - Kickstarter - MASSIVE CHALICE
thestalkinghead replied to melmer's topic in Video Gaming
well it's because even though you don't get the money taken from you you still have to budget for it and commit to that payment so if it doesn't get funded it would feel like something was taken away from you and you got refunded without it being your choice, it would be like if you ordered a meal at a restaurant (budgeting the money in your head) then like 20 minutes later the waiter returns and tells you they won't be making anymore food and sends you home, that would just be annoying even though you never got charged for the food -

i think asking for too much money makes people believe it will never get funded so they don't bother putting their money forward because it seems pointless, and that just turns into a loop of people seeing it is nowhere near being funded so they don't fund it, i think the only reason Godus got funded was because he had a few rich investors to finish the funding, i think asking for $750,000 makes it seem like even if it only gets that amount there will still be a decent playable game but hopefully it will get more and therefore make it better -

yeah basically all music even my favorite songs are really just my favorite sounds in a specific order, maybe musicals and things like that come through a bit clearer, but i think it's because i have this kind of poetry filter in my head that tries to translate poetry into proper english sentences and it can't keep up with the pace of songs so it just ignores the words and i just listen to the sounds (don't know if i can properly explain what i mean by "poetry filter") so generally if the lyrics to songs are literal(or proper english sentences) and not metaphorical poetry i can hear more of the actual words, but the good thing about that is that i decide what a song is about even if it is actually not what the song is about -

i generally have a hard time hearing lyrics in songs, vocals usually just end up being another instrument with the odd clear word i can actually hear -

I'm nearly the opposite nowadays, a AAA game really has to be impressive for me to pay the large price (not including any DLC) i would rather buy a few indie games with my money most of the time -
i did at one point think maybe it was a joke boss that was impossible, i think the achievements went wrong there as a glitch thing at the beginning where i selected abort but it played, i don't really mind though i don't think i got most of them

i got this with the humble indie bundle 8 and have completed it, it had a fun story and a nice stealth to kill mechanic, it has a few very hard levels but overall not too frustrating i would say it was a decent game but not as amazing as it has been advertised by some but worth getting with the humble indie bundle if you don't have it

Idle Thumbs 105: XCOM Obama

yeah, you can sometimes use the fact the the first time they see you they automatically move away from you into cover to your advantage by intentionally running into to the middle of where you think they are, this is useful if they are in a particularly well covered area because they are forced to move out of it, they won't call your bluff and just stay there, they have to run away. edit: i just completed it, Shaft is a hero -

yeah i guess is is the asymmetry/unfairness that bothers me, they could have just had AI that moved between cover(would that be a serious AI task?), they basically cheat and yeah i suspected cheaty teleportation, they didn't cheat in the older games but i guess cover didn't really exist the way it does in this one before -

thestalkinghead replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
i don't get a free move if the enemy find me out of cover, they should be moving in cover or be caught out like i would be, but yeah the thin man can be annoying especially when you have to save a person and on their way back to the ship the thin men just drop down out of nowhere in between the guy you are rescuing and the ship -

i am just playing classic but i have set my own hardness goal of never losing a soldier and sometimes that can be super hard even with the ability to load it, like sometimes because of the way the AI works ( being invisible in a group until they see you then they all get a free move) the enemy will spot you then totally surround you or jetpack into super effective spots and especially early on can just easily kill a guy, the way the AI works is one thing that bothers me though, why do they get a free move when they get spotted it seems like they are cheating to me. also i wish i could set settings for the auto save, i have a system of saves for XCOM/UFO i have a save for the base, a save in the base before the mission, a save at the beginning of the mission, a save mid mission and a save that i use for a time i may have fucked up/may win spectacularly, saving when a guy dies is just pointless i would not load that save, also it doesn't seem to save every turn just when your guy dies or randomly(or i can't figure it out) if you kill some random number of aliens -

tip 7 is the reason i won't play ironman mode, i don't see the point of playing a game without taking risks, sure i could methodically move through the map making sure every member of the squad is always in as little danger as possible (i do that sometimes) but that isn't fun, to me what is fun is having a plan that if something goes wrong your team could all die but if it works you will kick ass and win in a spectacular way, you could say that having saves takes away any of the risk but the risk is my personal enjoyment, meaning i don't like to load the game because i have failed and that isn't fun so i avoid it, but it is good to have it because what i don't like even more is losing everything i have worked for over the hours i have put into the game, so called "hardcore" gamers like to lose things and the ability to lose things gives them more enjoyment in a game but not me, i still want them to add a load function in don't starve because playing it just seems pointless, even though i enjoy most of the game the fact that in like 3 seconds you could lose everything you have done for the past 5 hours just makes the time and effort you have put in worthless -

any game with stealth needs some kind of stealth indicator (thief uses a light indicator) and they need this because games aren't realistic enough to support every option available to a real person, plus hud and indicators to me are just showing the skills of the character eg. my guy remembers the bullets i have fired and have left or how much health he has left (because that is a weird metaphorical representation of "heart") i don't want to have to remember ammo i have left, my guy can do that he is a marine or whatever he is trained to remember that stuff so i don't have to. i think if people make money of "lets plays" the company that make the game has the right to a cut of that money, but they have to be careful because lets plays are the best advertisement for a game especially if someone who you trust is enjoying the game, so if nintendo just makes any lets plays of nintendo games non-profitable they will only be hurting their own profit because lets players would probably boycott them. -

i bought xcom (because of this podcast and sale) and i like it, it is very much like a better version of UFO afterlight but made xcom-ish, i am playing on hard but not iron man, nobody has died i still have the guy from the first mission that didn't die and he was called Alejandro Haderas or something (and is voiced by Lee Everett) so i renamed him My name (Alex Head) but then after that i named them after game characters and stuff, i have agent 47, goo'day Kenny (he was australian and had a moustache) steroid gontarski, laura croft, nice guy (canadian medic), shaft, then i started to not care about the guys i didn't choose of my main guys so named them like "fast medic" and stuff, but man not letting people die is hard, i swear they intentionally put in the odd near impossible mission just so you will get squad wiped occasionally, i think i have nearly finished it (shaft used the psionic device thingy and I'm on the ship) and i think i could do the research base building more efficiently next time but it does seem a bit more linear than previous xcom/ufo games, good game though the only bug i have experienced is a save file glitch where i think i saved so many times in so many slots i think i broke the arrange in order of date thing so i have to just overwrite the saves on the top of the list but nothing bad.
