  1. Unity Tutorials

You could try making animations with the 3D objects and turning on Animate Physics to get something that feels similar. For the most part I don't think making physics machines in 3D works very well, where in 3D you have 3 position dimensions, and 3 axes of rotation, whereas 2D only has 2 position dimensions and 1 axis of rotation. Ultimately there is just a lot more that can go wrong with 3D physics-based walkers or other machines not to mention the performance impact. You could also try faking it with wheel colliders that are just kind of at the bottom of the object, or check this out to see if it has what you are looking for. Also you might want to look into Physics materials if you aren't using them already to help achieve the effect you're looking for.
  2. Post Your Game for Playtesting and Feedback!

I got to the point where I could transfer my followers to other continents and spend mana to gain new followers (the 1000 mana thing) if that's what you mean, otherwise no. I like the idea of the simulation being somewhat black box, so I think the best thing would just be to have tooltips for everything, even if the tooltips are vague. The thing that I really liked was the feeling that you aren't necessarily in direct control of the followers, so at any point they could just up and leave or do something that kind of throws a wrench into the works. The one thing I would say it absolutely needs are time controls (fast, normal, double time, etc) since the earlier portions of any kind of game like this are usually pretty slow.

I enjoyed that. I don't have much more feedback than to say it needs some tooltips and more things to do. Maybe give your followers quests, construction projects, or some other more complex actions. Also the follower/mana icons should probably last a bit longer, I didn't even realize I needed to click on them to pick them up at first. I only played for about 15 minutes, but that was enough for me to see it was something I'd be interested in.
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

That manifesto is basically the "Let's open a bar" conversation that everyone has at some point in their life. It seems like a good idea until you realize how much work it is and that last call exists for a reason.
  5. Feminism

Yeah vice has made some boneheaded moves in the past, but they are typically willing to go and cover things that no one else will touch and in incredible detail.
  6. This could be useful as a learning tool provided the syntax looks similar to paper and pencil math. In trying to teach a few people some programming stuff I've noticed that, at least at first, they have a difficult time remembering what symbols are used for what operations. Not to mention breaking a long algebraic sequence into multiple lines of code seems to throw new people for a loop when they are used to writing those operations by hand.
  7. Feminism

Vice put up an article discussing the widespread harassment women face and what it could lead to. It's quite telling that most of the comments are people attacking Sarkeesian's credibility or diminishing the events, then immediately condemning the harassment. Also if you don't currently, start reading and watching Vice News. It may just be the single .
  8. Feminism

Apparently one of the guys behind "TheFappening" reddit thread is concerned about his privacy.
  9. Feminism

This is the exact sentiment I've been trying to explain to my room mate for a couple weeks now. It's difficult to explain because you will at some point need to use examples, to which the response is always "well just stop doing those specific things". The idea that portrayals of women are only an issue because developers have levels set in brothels (or similar specific-action arguments) is just ridiculous, but for someone who is not willing to admit that a larger trend is taking place it seems perfectly reasonable.
  10. Feminism

That kind of reasoning also seems to be motivated by the idea that if something is widespread, it is acceptable or inevitable, which is particularly disgusting to me. I heard a lot of the same kind of language when the sexual assault in the U.S. military issue was picking up steam, some were even claiming rape to be an occupational hazard.
  11. Feminism

These are great observations. The so-called moderate opposition seems to mostly be people cherry picking what elements of the discussion they would like to discuss and disregarding the rest. I suppose the intent is to push the discussion into a more positive direction, but ultimately I think it plays into the suspicions of those who think the harassment is manufactured. Like you said anyone who is paying attention sees the link, but those coming in late seem to see the discussion and harassment as separate. I haven't paid all that much attention to youtubers regarding this, but from what I have seen there seems to be this belief that both sides must be given points in one category or another. There is a lot of "Side A is right here, Side B is right there" going on. They seem more interested in a philosophical discussion than examining the facts on the ground, probably in the hope of only remaining on the fringes to avoid the very harassment they are ignoring.
  12. This War of Mine

I came across this game thanks to a Polygon article and couldn't be more interested in playing it. Main Site An Interview with an Iraq war veteran helping the devs
  13. Teaching video game design to middle school youff

There was actually a game that game out a while ago that starts out 2D zelda style game, then morphs into a turn based RPG, then becomes 3D. I can't remember the name of it (I'll edit this post if I can find it), but it could be a cool way of showing off how games have evolved over the years. Edit: Found it! Main site here.
  14. Teaching video game design to middle school youff

I've never used it myself, but I've heard good things about GameSalad as a starter game engine. If the kids have phones they could put their games right on them. By the way is this meant to be more of a theory type course or more practical?
  15. Returned Vita :)

You could try e-mailing sony with the serial number, they might have some way of tracking which PSN account(s) have been used on the device or be able to find out where it was purchased.
  16. Teaching video game design to middle school youff

In case you've never heard of it before, Pixel Prospector has a massive knowledge base that includes some instructional material and postmortems.
  17. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Kris Graft at Gamasutra put up an interesting opinion piece regarding the identity crisis that games enthusiasts and developers are currently experiencing. I think his calling this situation an "Identity Crisis" is spot on, it takes me right back to all those developmental psych classes I should have paid more attention to.
  18. Idlethumbs changed my life forever

Good for you man, and thanks for sharing. It's awesome to be part of a community where people feel comfortable expressing themselves like this.
  19. Ferguson

Today it was announced that the DOJ is launching a pattern of practice civil rights investigation in Ferguson and surrounding areas. Hopefully this is the first step toward meaningful change.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

This is in my opinion the biggest problem with social media. Many of these companies have stated publicly that the harassment they see is a widespread, community problem but refuse to meaningfully address the community in trying to find a solution. This irks me particularly, since the excuse is typically these people are just 'misusing' the service and can only be dealt with on a case by case basis. Not to mention, as horrible as this stuff is, it pushes more traffic to those communities so there isn't much motivation to do any more than the bare minimum. It's a style of program design that sees no bad programs, only bad users, and it's a lie.
  21. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Throughout the article he accuses games journalists of wrongdoing, but praises youtubers for very much the same actions. Man that article is a mess.
  22. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I still can't understand how some have been able to justify this dissonance. Ostensibly the same people who have been calling for more in depth critique are now getting what they want, and it turns out it isn't what they want to hear so they are throwing a fit. I wouldn't give up though. It is unfortunate that some have, and hopefully they'll make their way back. These guys are just now finally learning how to share their toys. I think in the long run we'll look back and see this whole SNAFU for the tantrum it is.
  23. Feminism

You have got to be fucking kidding me. Just the gall of this is overwhelming.
  24. Feminism

I've been looking for something like this for a while with no real luck. I run across an occasional article that highlights a specific game but as far as I can tell there isn't a collated list somewhere of games that handle mature subject matter maturely.
  25. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

What you are seeing from that side of the debate is really the basis for any conspiracy theory. They perceive some crime having been committed but are unable to see a clear perpetrator of that crime, therefore everyone with something to gain is guilty. Any evidence they do find is seen only as further proof of a conspiracy, whereas a lack of evidence just means the cover up was that good. The problem with trying to engage them is that this kind of exercise really isn't concerned with material evidence so much as trying to find some smoking gun that their worldview requires exist. What is most unfortunate is that this supposed crime in their minds justifies any attacks made against journalists as some kind of popular uprising trying to upend the conspiracy. If I were a journalist I'd be changing all my passwords right about now.
