  1. Unity Questions Thread

There are a few options on the UnifyCommunity wiki, including a few that are meant to fake the effects you can only get in the pro version. If you can spare the money I'd recommend getting the subscription to Unity for $75 (US) per month which I recently had to do for work. It's nice to always be able to use the most up to date version of Unity, however you should note that any money paid toward the subscription can't later be applied to the purchase of a full license, and the agreement lasts a minimum of one year.

I've run into the same helium filament problem with legendary armors. The best way I've found to farm those resources is to head to the starting point of the Phogoth strike on the moon, then sweep up and down the area just outside of it (I call this area resource row). There is one large cave with crystals in it that usually has some filaments, each of the monster spawning caves in that area can have chests that tend to give them as well. The section is large enough to where some resources will respawn in the time it takes to go up and down the area.
  3. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Well just because the end result is he ends up on the side of the gaters doesn't mean that was his intention. I think his ultimate position isn't that social issues in games are good or bad but something he'd rather not have to deal with in his escapist hobby. As much as I disagree with most of what he says, I have a hard time blaming him for wanting something different, and allow me to explain why. When we talk about games we like to see something then ascribe intent or reason to it. For example if I choose to pick one skill or another in an RPG you could say that the reason was that I liked that skill, however the actual reason for that behavior could be a multitude of things. Maybe I didn't care so much and just clicked a button, maybe I picked that skill because I didn't like the alternatives rather than liking the specific skill I chose. Without the input of the one making the decision, it is simply impossible to know the exact reason for that decision. So when TB responds to the quote regarding Crystal Maiden's death sequence he criticizes the author for describing, what is known to him to be the result of a bug, as sexualization. I think this is a perfectly valid criticism, but then TB goes on to make the same mistake he is criticizing the DOTA 2 review's author for, namely ascribing intent based on an observed behavior. In my opinion this is because TB knows how to be the up-and-comer/disruptor, but doesn't know how to be whatever authority that naturally comes with getting that kind of exposure. So yes, he has said and supported some dumb things, but most likely not out of the desire to harm a particular viewpoint. He appears to want to see the quality of the discussion improve, but doesn't quite know how to articulate that desire.
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

As much as I respect TotalBiscuit for what he has created, I feel as though he doesn't know what to do from this point on. In each of the responses I've seen from him, on gamergate and other issues, he seems to have this desire to come from some new viewpoint as if that perspective is somehow more valuable. He seems to be pushing a narrative that both sides are wrong and responsible for reinforcing a conflict that need not exist, but fails to see this view is not the result of taking into account more information but less. I suppose his heart is in the right place, but man do his methods need some work.
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

I haven't seen all of them, but from what I have I would highly recommend the History Channel's The World Wars miniseries. This series covers things you wouldn't necessarily expect, such as the origin of hitler's mustache, and tells the story of the first and second world wars as a single tale
  6. Super Personal Games?

I would argue that games are quite excellent at personal expression, but not with specificity. As Muppjockey pointed out they can put you in that person's shoes, but also can create a framework for the player to understand why certain things exist or decisions are made. To give a personal example, everyone in school learns at some point about Napoleon pushing into Russia in the winter, but the foolhardiness of this idea didn't really sink in for me until a particularly long game of Empire: Total War when I made that same exact mistake because I wasn't paying enough attention to the seasons. I have personally had a number of experiences like this where I found myself understanding why certain things I don't like exist, a conclusion I could only have come to by taking part in a particular experience. I absolutely love games that allow me to put myself in a historical setting and basically see if I could do any better. I get the sense that I experiencing someone's story even if I don't know who they are.
  7. Destiny

Has Bungie stated why the resource limits exist? They seem really out of place in a game like this, barring any potential technical issues that I may not be aware of.
  8. Ello.co

For those who have been using Ello, how do you like it so far? How does it compare to other social media networks?
  9. Destiny

I was in the same situation with my level 26 character a few nights ago, and found out this is an event that seems to happen under certain conditions. Apparently when enough high level characters get together an invasion event can occur for a bit where you just get swarmed with enemies. It was chaotic fighting through those waves, and an incredible amount of fun just running into the spawn area and fighting like mad to kill them all before they made it out. In this case the best thing is to equip the upgrades that drop energy balls for your team mates, run 2 or 3 people into the cave and start spamming supers.

Watching some of her earlier videos I had this same thought. There are a few instances where I believe she overstates her argument (as in the case of using satire as evidence) or presents what appears to be an opinion as fact. However as she has made more videos this has completely disappeared, and for me at least, I think these complaints can be boiled down to growing pains. Over time the economy of information in Sarkeesian's videos have increased, and I think my initial complaints were most likely the result of her not having found her voice yet or some kind of misunderstanding on my part.
  11. Destiny

I actually just made it to level 26 just recently, finally picked up my first exotic item and all that. However I'm finding that once you make it to that level, unless you have a team you can do raids with or are really into the PvP the game starts to die a death by a thousand cuts. All the previous frustrations are made that much worse by knowing there isn't much of anything to build toward, and from what I've been seeing the raids don't seem to be giving out much in the way of in game rewards. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game up until that point and will probably just end up coming back to it once an expansion or major content update comes through. Edit: Wrong Quote
  12. Unity Questions Thread

How is the new UI system overall? I've seen some overview of the features but haven't spent much time with it myself.
  13. Destiny

What level are y'all up to? I finally made it to level 2 vanguard rep last night and bought a bunch of armors, which brought me from level 22 to level 26 and now I'm finding the game way too easy. I even managed to complete all the weekly heroic stuff on my own (minus the level 28 one) at increased difficulty levels. I suppose the next step is to try and get some friends together to accomplish one of the raids, but that is a much greater time commitment than I am willing to make at the moment.
  14. Destiny

on the resource note, if you dismantle an upgraded item you actually get more stuff for it. What I've been doing is swapping to any blue or green items items before turning in bounties, buying the upgrades, and dismantling the item for a few extra bits.
  15. Ferguson

on a side note, the trend of military equipment going to local governments is expanding into schools.
  16. Destiny

I had a similar issue with weapon parts early on, but now I'm having the same one with armor components. The legendary level armors especially need ascendant shards which can't really be gathered reliably, and 15-30 of some common resource which takes a few runs just for one upgrade.
  17. Ferguson

I feel as though a result of the lack of real data is that a good portion of the discussion has been focused on describing some kind of war on cops in same vein as the war on Christmas type discussions, if my Facebook wall is any indication.
  18. Feminism

I suppose it isn't significantly different, but it is a bit more frustrating. The people that video is targeting are young, passionate, easy to manipulate and frightened of losing something they hold dear. This is a video from a member of a prominent lobbyist group clearly looking to gin up support for their way of thinking, but I very much doubt the people that buy into this kind of thinking can see that. All you really have to do is present yourself as an authority and people will start to listen to you (where as Coulter presents her work as opinion) so any hope of this whole discussion taking a positive turn within that group is that much farther away.
  19. Destiny

This is basically the reason I'm still playing. I used to be really into Halo, but it was always difficult to get a group together to play story missions. The one thing I wish Bungie would do is add matchmaking to everything in the game including the story missions (unless it's already there and I'm just missing something).

Even if that is the case, political party registration really means very little. Whenever there is a Democratic primary in my area I go to the polling place, register as a Democrat and vote, and when there is a Republican primary I go to (usually the same) polling place, register as a Republican and vote.
  21. Feminism

I couldn't even finish that sommers video. I feel like I should at least hear her out, but I just can't contain my contempt for everything she represents. She's just another one of those "conservatives" who claim to be coming from an intellectual perspective but constantly rely on some perverse perception of common sense or traditional "wisdom" to advance their argument. I want to write her a letter describing why I feel this way, but to be honest in my experience arguing with people like this they are only interested in twisting the discussion into some pre-defined end state and would probably just be a waste of my time.
  22. Destiny

I've been having some success with shotguns as a Titan, but really only when using the shield ability since distance is less of an issue when it is up. I've tried playing more offensively with the striker subclass, but even after throwing down almost all my abilities (flashbang > charge melee > shotgun blast > standard melee) I do about as much damage as the blade dancer does in 2-3 swipes of their super.
  23. Destiny

I actually had the same reaction at first, particularly when the Light stat is introduced, and I'm still not certain what the Grimoire is for. What I've found helpful is reading over all the tooltips extensively before swapping in a piece of equipment and then after. This is the one drawback I've seen in destiny's menu system, in that when a new concept is introduced they don't give you all the information about that topic, so you have to do some fiddling and investigation to really get a handle on it.

this might be useful for you, I came across it on Gamasutra a couple days ago. http://gamasutra.com/blogs/MarkVenturelli/20140810/223001/Game_Feel_Tips_I_The_Ghost_Jump.php
  25. I was really impressed by the production quality of this.
