  1. Nobody expects the Dragon Age Inquisition

I also didn't like the multiplayer at first until I started on playing on higher difficulties and unlocking the other classes. The starting classes are all pretty boring whereas some of the ones you unlock can make the game play almost entirely different. As the difficulty goes up they throw a few more enemies at you and the bosses in particular get pumped way up so the fights tend to be more dynamic and mobile. Perhaps due to this however you tend to see very specific builds at the higher difficulty levels, Mainly from my experience Necromancer, Arcane Warrior, Templar, and Hunter are the ones people seem to like.
  2. Motivation.

I won't likely have the time to contribute anything major, but I'd be interested in helping people out or posting odds and ends when I am able.

What difficulty is everyone playing on? I jumped it up to nightmare at the start, really just to see what it was like, but so far haven't had to lower it after about 8 hours in. So far I'm really enjoying the challenge, and have even been able to take down level 8 mobs while my party was only level 4-5.
  4. Ferguson

This prosecutor effectively tried to tell the Grand Jury that the events that lead to Michael Brown's death happened multiple ways. He called a number of witnesses that contradicted one another, even some whose testimony contradicted the physical evidence found at the scene. He did enough to make it seem as though he made a good faith effort, relying on the fact that most people don't know enough about the Grand Jury process to understand why his efforts actually undermined his stated goal. The Grand Jury was just presented a mountain of evidence and basically told to figure it out themselves.
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I made it through about 8 minutes of that, and it seemed to be going down the same road as all other pro-GG/Anti-SJW stuff does. I really can't justify in my mind how no one that supports any of these movements ever hears one of these far fetched claims and simply questions its reasoning. Its like talking with someone who is fresh out of an intro to psychology class and thinks they have some great insight about the human condition because they can recognize a few basic concepts without really understanding them.

I'm no legal expert, but from what I understand the way the Grand Jury was conducted virtually ensured no charges would be brought. Grand Juries are run entirely at the discretion of the prosecutor, which involves them generally bringing what evidence they have to attempt to convince the jury that charges should be brought. However with the Ferguson Grand Jury contradictory evidence was brought before the court, including some witnesses being brought on later to give testimony that directly contradicted previous evidence. The Prosecution provided no narrative, which is at odds with the purpose of a Grand Jury as far as I understand it. The whole ordeal seems to be focused on preventing anyone from having to claim responsibility, and even making the announcement at 8:30 PM basically ensured there would be a violent response. I was told the National Guard units that have been called in supposedly only have orders to protect the police department and command centers, although I can't confirm this. Thankfully though the Justice Department investigation is still ongoing, so there is a chance the institutional problems facing Ferguson could still be addressed.

Well what do you mean by budget notebook? I bought a laptop a while ago with 8 gigs of RAM and a Core i5 Ivy bridge processor and have been able to run Unity on it just fine, although I haven't tried anything that graphics intensive beyond some of the example scenes. I think the biggest things to look out for would be RAM, processor speed which only matters up to a point, and then what shader model the graphics card supports although I'm pretty sure everything made today supports SM3 or better. If you're willing to throw a little more money at it, it might be worth getting a laptop/tablet combo so you can test touchscreen stuff without having to deploy to a device, provided you want to work on touchscreen games.

I did actually set things up in the keep, but the issue was my Xbox account is linked to some deleted origin account so I couldn't transfer what I set up in the keep, which is apparently linked to my new account. Before trying to set this up I didn't realize I had 2 accounts, and customer service told me I couldn't transfer the Xbox account link, nor could I delete the old account, nor could I transfer the save from my origin account to my old deleted account on my own. Really the whole situation would have been avoided if Origin allowed you to unlink and relink other accounts to an origin account, or if EA could have actually deleted the record of my old account.

I had a similar situation, where my Xbox Live account is linked to some old Origin account that has been deleted, which is linked to an old email address which is also deleted. I ended up contacting customer support in the hopes they could delete the old account, with no luck. I was however able to get them to share my world state with the old account on their end (their workaround didn't work for me either) so I could import that into my game at the start on xbox. While this did work I don't think it brought over the world state correctly, after playing for a few hours I ran into some dialogue about a character from DA:I having been killed where he was supposed to be alive. For as full featured as this game is, it is odd to me that they didn't just make the keep accessible from inside the game to avoid this kind of frustration.
  10. Burning out rapidly on ideas

I think it's only natural working in a creative medium that you get burned out on ideas, and even worse are those Ideas you really like but just can't get to work right. Personally what I do is rather than treat each new things as a project, I just try to come up with an idea for some system, narrative, etc and try to come at it from all angles. Generally what I do is get to this point, then let it simmer for a while and go to look at something else. For me it helps to not see all these projects as something that needs to be completed, but rather just things that need to be researched. I've got at least half a dozen half-baked game ideas, none of which will ever likely get made, but in that time I've learned a lot about advanced math functions, how to write plugins, more than I ever cared to know about Unity, and gotten a bunch of ideas to a point where I could integrate them into some future project, etc. I started designing a mobile game around 4 years ago, and only in the last week have been able to integrate all the ideas into a somewhat cohesive whole. Maybe it isn't the fastest way to do it, but every time I go back in I become excited about the idea again.

To be honest I've used Visual Studio ever since I started programming and liked it so much I never really considered using Monodevelop as a script editor. After what I'm hearing here I'll have to give it a shot.

So are the PC controls complaints just bugs that will be worked out? I'm trying to decide whether to pick it up on Xbox One or PC and what I've heard so far about the PC version doesn't seem so great.
  13. Feminism

My room mate does that thing where he uses "woman" instead of "women" when talking about women as a group too. I can never figure out how someone posts something like that and either doesn't recognize the error, or realize that it makes them sound like a caveman.
  14. Unity Questions Thread

Do you happen to know if this also highlights or in some way points out the object that is null? I typically have to do things like individual print statements if I have a line that references 2 or more objects, since Unity's error reporting system doesn't say which object has a null reference, but just points to the line where the null reference was found. I'm not sure if this is standard, but working within Visual studio for XNA projects you could just hover your mouse over the variable and look at the properties of that object to quickly find out which object had the null reference.
  15. Ferguson

While not directly related to this, I've heard a number of legal experts talk about just how odd the Grand Jury process is being handled by the prosecutor. I'm not a lawyer myself, so I don't understand these things as well as I should, but from what I have heard it seems as though the powers that be have never had any interest in prosecuting the officer. Grand Juries are lead by prosecutors, and that prosecutor has authority over what evidence is presented. Usually this means the prosecutor displays their narrative to the Jury and finds out if they have enough to pursue charges on. In Ferguson however the Grand jury has been bombarded with all kinds of evidence, some seemingly irrelevant to the case, has not been provided a narrative on what happened (just possible situations), had been presented with conflicting evidence or accounts with no comment, were not given much in the way of instruction, and were not even sequestered during the proceedings. While I am no expert, this seems like the exact kind of thing you would pull if you don't want to charge him, but also don't want to be held responsible for not doing so. I'd love to hear someone with more legal knowledge's take on the subject, but from every interview I've seen or article I've read regarding the way this grand jury is being handled leads me to believe it's all just a dog and pony show.

Happy to help! It's nice to know that all the pain Unity has caused me over the last 2 years pays off!

I actually forgot to mention this, but that script execution order setting only realiably affects like-methods called on a timer. So for example the all the Update() methods of one script will always fire before the Update() methods of another script. The Start() method on the other hand is always called before the first time Update() is run on a per-object basis, so if the objects are created at different times they will fire as they are available. Ultimately it means that the script execution order will only be relevant when dealing with methods like Update(), LateUpdate(), and FixedUpdate(). You could try moving the array initialization into an Awake() method which is called when the object is created, or wrap it into a custom Initialize method that you can control with a flag. For example: private bool _isInitialized = false; public void Initialize() { if(_isInitialized) { return; } // Do Initialization logic here _isInitialized = true; } Then just place a call to Initialize() at the start of any method that manipulates the array to ensure that initialization always occurs exactly once.

Well for null reference errors, the way I always solve them is to look for the reference type variables involved and do a if (object == null) { print("Object is null"); } just to figure out what is actually null. There are a set of tools out there for integration with visual studio (which you can use as a line by line debugger) but I've never gotten them to work consistently. From what I see here, this is what I think you should check Just a thought, the variable _prefab you use during the instantiate call doesn't seem to be referenced anywhere, is it populated? If not this would result in the noob object being null. Also, and I don't know if you are doing this, but if you have a prefab reference itself the Instantiate call will actually create a duplicate of the current in-scene object rather than the prefab it is based on. I only mention this because I made this mistake once with an enemy that can split multiple times and it took me a while to figure out since it can create odd situations.

Could you include the other bits of code that interact with those methods? Or perhaps the error you are seeing (if any) in the console, or perhaps just the intended result vs. what is happening. I can't quite tell without some more info, but my best guess is that the PopulateBlocks() method is firing before the Start() method where the arrays are initialized if the error is related to the Array's length.
  20. Destiny

I feel like after watching that video again, I get what bothers me about this game. It clearly is a game where emergent behavior can occur, but Bungie seems as though they are trying to directly systemize or support that in some way. Whether or not this is a good thing I suppose is up to you, although thus far it seems as though all these one-off things Bungie has been doing have lead to frustration more than anything. I would imagine that down the road it will lead to a game that does a few specific things very well but is a hassle otherwise.
  21. Feminism

My room mate went on an anti feminism rant last night with a similar result, largely thanks to things I've learned reading this thread. I feel like every time I discuss feminism or women's issues of any kind with my male friends someone gets angry and ends up spewing some incredibly sexist shit, then immediately gets that deer-in-the-headlights look, or spends the rest of the night explaining how sexist they aren't.
  22. Destiny

Man, of all the things this game didn't need. This is just the icing on the cake of all the needless things Destiny has packed into it. I wonder if this kind of thing is going to continue until Destiny almost becomes another game entirely.
  23. Video games and Influences

Over the last few years I'm sure we've all noticed video games becoming more in twined with other media, both aesthetically and thematically. I'd just like to provide a thread where we can discuss these trends since I couldn't find one before. Today I found out about a new fully first-person point-of-view movie called Hardcore (indiegogo link) being funded on Indiegogo. The trailer is basically the first level in a military FPS, grenade tutorial and all. Trailer:

I'm in the same boat, I won't have time to get into the campaign at all over the next couple of months but I should have time for multiplayer here and there. Also I wouldn't bother playing through DAO and DA2 unless you have a lot of time to kill. I played both on different platforms, so I ended up using the Keep/tapestry thing to generate my old save file and that seemed more than enough. Even some of the small throwaway side quests are in there, so I don't think you'll really be missing anything. Link: https://dragonagekeep.com

If you're looking for a good input helper type class for Unity I'd recommend cInput 2. Basically they give you an Input Manager that is set up to read all possible axes, then you just pick and choose the ones you want with their wrapper class. It'll allow you to have rebindable inputs at runtime (stock Input manager can't) and you still have access to all of Unity's Input stuff if you still want it. As far as touches go, it may appear daunting but really isn't too bad. You'll want to put something together that just looks at the touches Unity gives you and figures out what is happening from there. I remember a while back some MIT students made some kind of a XNA-like Input wrapper for Unity, I'll put a link into this post if I can find it. Also, XNA's touchscreen API is pretty easy to understand and wouldn't be that hard to replicate if you need something to start from. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.xna.framework.input.touch.aspx
