  1. VALVe money grab #134: Autumn Sale

I've been waiting for Iron Brigade to pop up as a flash sale, but since I don't think that's going to happen(and it would almost assuredly only go down to $5), I think I'm going to pick it up. Is anyone still playing it? I had a ton of fun trying out the original 360 release, and I'm trying to convince some friends into getting it as well.
  2. Double Fine Amnesia Fortnight 2012

Oof, I was hoping to see Kaiju Piledriver as one of the top 4, but Spacebase made it in, so that's just as good. I've also always been curious as to how gamejams actually go down, so I guess I'll be glued to the livestream.
  3. The idle playlist

Here's the list of recommended tracks out of everything currently in my library that I always have saved for something like this, pick and choose what you like. I have another one strictly for game music floating around somewhere.

  5. Idle Thumbs 81: Happy Halloween

I absolutely agree with your appraisal of Hotline Miami. It's given me the most conflicting feelings out of any game I've played in a looong time. The feeling you get after busting through a stage you've been stuck on is awesome, but then you look back at what you've done, and you feel... gross. The entire game feels like some sort of fever dream from the moment you start it up, and upon quitting, all I can think is "what in God's name have I doing for the past hour". It's definitely a Cactus game, I'm getting mad Mondo and Norrland vibes from the effects. What I find most interesting is how people are interpreting the gameplay. I'm going through it as more of a puzzle game, working out the best order to get through the rooms, but I see quite a lot of people playing it as a straight action game, never taking even a second to stop and work out their options beyond the start of the stage. Both approaches seem to be equally successful, which is fantastic. Like others, I don't know if I'll keep playing it. From what I've heard, it gets even more off-putting in the later stages. Given how I feel about it now, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get past that. I feel like that's the point, though. Spec Ops had the same thing going for it, and it's an absolute shame more people didn't understand the point it was trying to make. It's one thing when a game can simply shock you with outrageous action, it's another thing when it can actually make you feel bad for playing it and question why you're doing the things you're doing.
  6. I finally got an invite yesterday after months of waiting. What a wonderful thing to come home to after taking a few days off work, along with a copy of Borderlands 2. I don't know how I can pick between the two now. I played LoL for about a year and was never very good at it, and the community was just a bit too serious, but hopefully I can learn the ropes without too much trouble. The interface is definitely worlds easier to understand than LoL's, that's for sure.
  7. Mods for games

Seconding NEOTOKYO° and Research & Development. It's an absolute shame NT's community died so quickly, it was a real gem. The only mod I've enjoyed more than NT(in a strictly multiplayer sense) is Sven Co-op, which apparently is still being updated. The sheer variety of maps in it(including a full port of They Hunger) is incredible. The Tetris maps are some of the best, in my opinion. DOOM's modding community is still going strong, and it's cranking out some crazy-awesome wads. Reelism is an absolute must if you enjoy over the top run-and-gun action of the original DOOM, but want to kick it up another few notches. Wildweasel's "NAZIS" replaces your good old hellish enemies and futuristic weapons with WWII-themed soldiers and era-appropriate weapons. It's fantastic used in conjunction with the first half of Epic 2. It gives it a great Wolfenstein feel.
  8. New people: Read this, say hi.

Hi there! I'm a longtime reader of the forums and listener of the podcast, but I never really thought to sign up for a forums account. I've been playing video games for as long as I can remember, and though I don't have as much time to devote to actually play them anymore, they're still an integral part of my life. I mostly prefer to discuss their writing these days. That's why I love Idle Thumbs, it's the perfect blend of comedy and real discussion, something that a great deal of other gaming podcasts don't seem to have. I'm currently trying to find a nice hardcopy of The Sense of an Ending so I can catch up with the Book Club, and I hope to contribute at least a little to their discussion threads.
  9. Creepy Pokemon hack story

There was a "p" at the end that was left off, but yeah, I like that one too. http://creepypasta.w...ki/Jvk1166z.esp I think it's a decent little story when it comes to the stuff that happens in-game, especially given how strange even an unmodded Morrowind is. There's just something off about how Vvardenfell feels. The out-of-game segments and narration are, as is the case with most creepypasta, really exaggerated and overblown for the sake of being "scary". It's still worth a read, in my opinion. Most, if not all, of the things detailed in the mod are able to be made with the Construction Set, and I would love to see a full-fledged mod come of this story. There is a zip file floating around that was supposedly a recreation, but it's actually a bunch of assets from other games, and a few attack reaction sounds. Morrowind is an odd game in its own right, especially if you've read some of the lore concerning Vivec, CHIM, and the Godhead. Michael Kirkbride's writing is something that I feel hasn't been matched when it comes to the deities and their powers in games. The Metaphysics of Morrowind is a neat set of articles that examines those powers and some of the other eccentricities in the Elder Scrolls world(such as how every one of Daggerfall's seven possible endings occurred at once). They're definitely worth a read if that sort of thing interests you.
