  1. Farscape

You definitely have to pick and choose what shows and reviewers to read (i could rank it rewatch, drama then comedy last in terms of the types of shows). Rowan Kaiser has a pretty good one on Babylon5 (another show where you want to skip most if not all of the first season) if you are looking for more non-Trek 90's sci-fi (and an agruement for B5 predating the likes of the Sopranos and the wire in terms of tv serialisation) I hold out hope for a Luxx rewatch someday which is the other show with a ragtag crew on the run in a living ship but not so good although far crazier/all over the palce with its cast and storylines than Farscape.
  2. I am looking for more podcasts like the culture gabfest which cover a lot of pop culture. The only other one I know of and listen to NPR Pop culture happy hour.
  3. Breaking into Non-Fiction

9/11 wars by Jason Burkes is a very indepth look at the "war" on terror and it general failure. Explaining Hitler, Ron Rosebaum is an investigation into various historians to explain Hitler and the Holocaust. The black swan, Taleb - a very interesting book on how we view risk and probability. Tim Hardfords the undercover economist and the undercover economist strikes back which are very good introductions to micro and macro economics Norman Davies Vanished Kingdoms on Eastern European history Red sun by Sudeep Chakravarti looks the Naxailte rebel movement in India The great war and modern memory, Paul Fussell Margaret Macmillians books 1914 on the outbreak of WW1 and 1919 on the Paris peace conference Daivd Simon's Homicide and the corner Edward W Said's Culture and Imperalism and Orientalsim Destiny distrupted - a history of the world through islamic eyes. Also the crusades thtough Arab eyes The making of modern Japan, Jansen The making of the English working class, E.P Thompson Finally empire of the Summer moon which is a history of the Commanche
  4. Farscape

Both the av club and Tor.com have pretty good rewatches of the shows that are worth a read http://www.avclub.com/tv/farscape/ http://www.tor.com/features/series/farscape-rewatch-on-torcom
  5. anime

The first season of that show is good. From season 2 onwards it is a swift descent into some of the most messed up fan service i have ever seen, mostly in gif form a friend linked me to after hearing I was going to watch the second season as a warning.
  6. Other podcasts

Comdey Bang bang. Also look up the podmass feature on the av club from the last couple months cause they mentioned alot of different comedy podcasts
  7. Books, books, books...

I found that on project gutenberg, started it, found out the original translation wasn't complete and now stare at the collection on amazon thinking will I click buy. You have not helped in dissuading me from that but have got me thinking one of my arbitrary reading goals for next year will to the read the 5 chinese classics His previous book - bad science is also very good, focuses more on pseudo medicine
  8. Movie/TV recommendations

That movie is the fast and the furious 4.5 in space which means it's a half-step away from the best idea for an action/heist movie - the fast and the furious in space which Vin Disel needs to start working on with the next Riddick film.
  9. Dune

I was talking with a friend about this series yesterday. He read the summary of the series and most of his questions were what was up the books after god-emperor. They do read as a very different series and while I see where he was going with the final book (or the final 2 books are written by his son based on his fathers outlines) it's a lot weaker that the story of the first 4.
  10. Steven Erikson and The Malazan Book of the Fallen

I never thought about his books that way - they really are people being put through the ringer. I think you would like Erikson since he does the same. I still see Irvine's books on sale here in Ireland.
  11. Steven Erikson and The Malazan Book of the Fallen

Irvine's middle series with the war would be the closest of his works to Erikson, also respect for mentioning Irvine, rarely see his name when people talk bout fantasy fiction. Writing style wise don't really remember. I would say he is a better writer than Abraham or at least his Coin and ?/ series although I hear his previous series is meant to be better. Also if people that like Erikson should check out KJ parker. Her book Sharps is a pretty good into to her work. They both have a very similar sense of humour that I enjoy. Also cause tor.com started a re-reading of it check out the daughter of the empire series by Janny Wurts and Raymond feist. http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/05/rereading-the-empire-trilogy-daughter-of-the-empire-part-1 and they also just started the re-read of the final book of the Malazan series. http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/07/malazan-reread-of-the-fallen-the-crippled-god-chapter-one
  12. So Much Ireland (Help me plan my trip!)

I would say Ailwee and Crag Caves are bout even but Ailwee is in the Burren which is worth seeing. Also Cliffs of Moher is required viewing by law. The irish history museum and the irish military history museum are worth checking out history wise. If the weather is decent Phoneix park is a nice place to walk around and you can see where our leprecon president lives.
  13. Books, books, books...

This guy is doing a chapter by chapter read of Wizard's first rule and alot of the problems with that series are there right from the start
  14. Poetry suggestions

I am looking for poetry suggestions because it is something I only ever read as part of studying English in secondary school. I just started a collection of Robert Graves poetry after his auto-biography being mentioned in the book Skippy dies. I don't care about time period or subject matter or type just poetry/poets ye read and really liked.
  15. Has anyone done the play every hero till you will a game with them and move onto the next one. I think they talked about it on an early episode of Dota Today and I am currently using that idea by only playing least played from a to z but not till I win a match
  16. Books, books, books...

I started using food reads a couple hears ago as a way to keep a record of the books I have read. It's good although you have to be spot on when searching for a book/author any results.
  17. I watched the two documentaries one day after another and Free to Play just didn't grab me like Smash Bros did. Watching Smash Bros has me wanting a similar treatment of the Street Fighter scene. I do wonder how much of that being down to being way more familiar with the pro video game competition than the more amateur/semi-pro Melee scene
  18. Terminal7 7: His Toy-Making Genius

Leigh's comment about preferring to play Netrunner in person cause there is more tells remind me of online v in person poker. The same is true but playing alot of online poker helps against really good poker players face to face because of one things they work on is eliminating their tells meaning that a person who maybe isn't the best mechanically but is good at reading people will hit a brick wall in tournaments.
  19. Books, books, books...

You can do what I am doing and follow this blog that has a chapter by chapter reading of both Sanderson's new book and the Terry Goodkind's Wizard first law rather than wasting reading time on their epic shit Also just finished Wages of destruction by Adam Tooze which was close look at the making and breaking of the Nazi economy and how Hitler's view that the US would be the world power to beat was a major drive for him wanting to takeover Eastern Europe.. Very interesting and an unexpected page turner.
  20. OCTGN: Netrunner

Anyone else playing Netrunner on OCTGN here and looking for someone that play with? I be seamus2389. Mostly playing weekends GMT time.
  21. Episode 244: Best of eSports 2013

I would really like a regular podcast focusing on e-sports in general. I mostly watch League (and Company of Heroes 2) but I checked out EVO, the International and will probably watch CS:GO IEM. The only thing like it I have watched is the Rob Breslau Leauge show and the short lived Idle thumbs Dota 2 podcast.
  22. Limited run podcasts

Most suggestions for podcasts I come across are for ones that are weekly/ no end date and I was wondering what good podcasts that had a limited run and are no longer updating. The ones I have listened to are mostly history - the history of rome, the military history podcast, 12 Byzantine rulers, norman centuries (both by the same guy) and the life of Napoleon (about 60-70 hours long which seems insane in retrospect), a lecture series on the life of Hannibal and a series on ancient greece I came across in itunes U.
  23. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

That series looks so bad from the fan service covers alone. Also check out Hawkeye, Captain Marvel and the Youngs Avengers from Marvel, any image/vertigo series that launched in the last 12-24 months (they aren't all great but it more hit than miss). Also MGMT from Darkhorse I got the -rereleased copy of the Incal (which was really good and reminded me of Tablot's Luther Arkwright) and am considering learning French after visiting a bookstore in Brussels and seeing how much stuff that never gets released in English.
  24. Terminal7 3: Burning the Box

I am loving OCTGN now that I understand the interface. Netrunner everyday
  25. Your Favourite Book This Year (2013)

I read the Left hand, the dispossed (which i liked even more than Left hand) and an amazing short story collection called the birthday of the world. Book of the New Sun series would be my best read of 2012. I plan I re-reading it next year cause I'd say there is a whole of lot stuff I missed the first time round. That along with The Stars My Destination are one of those books that really make you feel like different/ you are reading something unique and slightly off key to the actual world in a way most SFF doesn't. I read his Wizard Knight book this year but wasn't a fan. I have read the Forever war. Liked it, very interesting allegory of what it was like being a Vietnam Vet but could of done without the homophobia.
