The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Merus replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
See, I'm conflicted about that because the same advice applies if you're going to pay a below-average salary, or if it's clear the relationship is "we're equals, and we own this together". There's a long history in business of owners of a fledgling business forgoing salary to grow the business and get dividends down the line. If I was making a game on my own, I wouldn't expect to pay myself a salary. I think that the advice conflicts if you have new people coming in who aren't founders, because they won't get the opportunity to have their ideas be the foundation of whatever it is that's being built. -
My favourite dumb joke is a knock-knock joke. Someone start.

I suspect Danielle hasn't been told what's brown and rhymes with snoop.

I think if the two would have talked, it'd create a time paradox.

I wonder how long it'll take them to realise that Australians express nearly every opinion with at least some level of irony. I remember while I was living at uni that we traumatised an international student when she came to the conclusion that Australians genuinely hated Americans. We did eventually talk her down by explaining that we're just like that and that most of that ill-feeling she was hearing was a little exaggerated.

Looks like someone bent that kid's face. I mean, my art's not great, but I also don't charge people for it.

Following on from the comments about website moderation is the speech/article that cemented a lot of these ideas about group-forming: A Group is its Own Worst Enemy. I link this basically every opportunity I get because a: it's been ten years and it's still new to people and b: it talks about people who start up websites with radical inclusion and then are shocked when they're populated by assholes - and explains how this is inevitable.

I never finished Skyward Sword because, despite having no trouble with any of the controls, I also had no trouble with any of the dungeons, and it just became a slog. There was one puzzle I didn't immediately get in the entire game, I didn't have to do a lot of discovery or work, I wasn't really having a lot of fun. TP might be a little drab, but I've got much fonder memories of it (in part that's because the writing was better, although the writing in Zelda games is never particularly good). Link Between Worlds has been the best Zelda in recent memory, but I'm almost certainly skipping the next mainline Zelda game unless it turns out it's really, really good.

Yeah, never ever put money down on a place to live you haven't seen.

No, that was a 'huh, someone who's been shaped by neo-fascism', not a 'huh, never heard of neo-fascism'. Given the general intellectual flavour of Idle Thumbs, I'd imagine you're probably not a neo-fascist at the moment, but still. Huh.

My favourite one is when people say that there's inevitably going to be another video game crash. There wasn't a first one! It was only in North America, everywhere else had uninterrupted computer game supplies. It was also computer games here, and video games were on consoles. There wasn't a rich vein of really good games on consoles, and computer games were more reliably good. You knew which companies made what games, and there was shareware, so you could play the first episode of the games and then try and wangle a copy of the other episodes for the games that were most worth your time.

Idle Thumbs 174: Live from the Metropolitan Ballroom
Merus replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
The trick with Arkham Horror is that every expansion waters that game down, so they had to release an expansion that makes all the expansions work together. -

This thread's title is alarming.

I'm secretly miffed whenever I see steampunk heroes. I expect them to be reactionaries concerned about the Indian Menace or the poor.

So for those of you who have recent Android phones, what's the stability like? I ask because the Android phone I'm borrowing is a little crashy but it's a 2011 HTC phone so I'm not surprised. How stable do you find Samsung Android phones?

Given every iPhone I've ever owned has been stolen, I'm not buying a gold brick. Also not enough money.

Also there's DiGiornio, which unwisely weighed in with "#whyistayed You had pizza." until they actually read what the tag was about. Oh social media. You're kind of shit but no-one wants to admit we get a lot less out of it than we put in.

I think, from a purely psychological standpoint, allowing people you know to be dodgy to do the framing for you is going to lead to you asking the wrong questions. If someone dodgy is bringing up questions, your very first response should be: why these questions? Out of all the questions they could have asked about this topic, why these ones? The IGF has problems (it's got a bias towards easily graspable mechanics coupled with unusual art styles), but that's mostly because these days there are a lot more indie games than the IGF can reasonably judge, and there's a lot more indie games that have radically different goals than the IGF rewards. The solution here is to make more awards that reflect the more diverse scene. I've never really gotten into Brandon Boyer, to be honest. I get this weird wanker vibe from him that is totally prejudice and probably unfair.
