  1. Tabletop Game Development

Do you have any pictures of the board? Reading your description it really sounds like this is the sort of game that will live or die on how well it's board is made. I have this impression the main way someone wins is getting to a power up then getting the jump on someone, almost a classic FPS death match in some ways. Also is their any way for the map to change? are starting points fixed? Also 40min time limit is good because no matter how simple it's rules are you can prob ad at least 10mins onto that first time someone plays it. But as Clyde says to give more meaningful feedback weed need to see a bit more

I quite enjoyed it when I watched it too, It reminds me a bit of the way the minds and drones interact with humans in Iain Bank's culture novels. In both Humans have basically ceased to be the driving force force behind a civilisation but are looked down on with a strange kinda benevolent indulgence and maybe even gratitude by those who have superseded them. They have no purpose apart from that which they find for themselves as Idividuals. On a different note has anyone watched Erin and have any thoughts about it? Seen a few people speak highly of it and there's a couple of interesting staff involved but I'm cautious to commit to any series which requires me to work through 50 episodes to see its conclusion.
  3. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

I'm not sure why exactly but I feel I much preferred the black and white style of Bone to the way Tüki looks. I'm not sure but perhaps it feels like the fine detail line work he does works better when there isn't the colour distracting from it. Actually looking at the buffalo stampede and comparing it to the cow race in Bone I think maybe he's just not finishing the artwork to the same level of polish.

Yes primarily the films, the first to a certain extent and the 2nd to a HUGE extent. I wonder if it's just a case that watching characters monologiing a philosophical viewpoint is something that is nearly impossible to find interesting twice. It's like having a reindeer who keeps telling the same anecdote time after time. I rather have a characters life view implied by their actions rather than given to us as a huge chunk of dialog. Perhaps as well it comes from having to speed read big blocks of subtitles, a process which can often make long stretches of dialog impenetrable. Which reminds me, I've been giving some thought to trying to learn a bit of basic a Japanese With the aim of perhaps getting to the point where i can get a fairly good idea of what's being said. Perhaps re-watching a few series without subs as practice. I've been thinking about this for a while, but it came to a head recently when I ended up watching three different subs of Kill La Kill and finding myself feeling different parts of each sub fitted better to me. So anyone fancy giving it a go with me? Feel having someone else (or even better a group of people) doing the same thing would encourage me to keep at it. I gave up around episode 13-14 I think, is it worth me going back to it and making a push to the end? Edit:
  5. anime

You know in a weird way round the twist reminds me of some of Ghibli's children stuff, perhaps it's something to do with the fact they all tend to be entered around one major location complete with its own strange logic, plus ghosts, magic, body swapping, etc (with the addition of Australian humour), my childhood memories of it are quite vague but I'm fairly sure I remember being more than a little disturbed by a few episodes. It's a bit of weird series all in all, as a child there were parts which I didn't feel I was 100% getting (perhaps that's just because I'm a Brit ) but as a adult I have very little desire to go back and watch it. I mean people are always taking about thing like Ghibili's work, Adventure Time, or Toy Story etc working for both kids and adult, but here's a series that kinda felt it didn't quite fit in either. Which I guess kinda makes it a teenager? Or perhaps more accurately a Tweenager as Merus says. Which would make it a weirdly age specific program. Which got me thinking about what anime I watched when I was at a specific age and now just don't hold up for me. Weirdly for me it's Probably Ghost in the a Shell, I loved that when I first watched it as a late teenager but now even though I still admire a lot of the visual design I have huge problems with the dialog. I guess I used to find it 'deep & meaningful', but now I just find it long winded. On a different note, watched the last episode of this series of Log Horizon, and it feels like at a point where it could quite easily jump the shark because it appears to attempting a tonal switch to something a bit more abstract and away from the interpersonal stuff it was actually doing pretty well.
  6. Ok everything installed, this is what I hope the airflow should be like
  7. Thanks for the info, I'd assumed it was junk but was curious what the post mortem was so I could make sure it didn't happen again with the new setup. The rest of the parts arrived today, unfortunately I didn't get nearly as much installed as I wanted to because one of the motherboards screws threading was knackered so i had to spend a hour removing the little git, then salvage a replacement spacer from a old case I had in the attic. I eventually installed the new heatsink, and am now going to bed nervous that the damn huge things gonna somehow tear the CPU from its sockets and come crashing down in the night. Assuming it doesn't and assuming I didn't damage the motherboard in some way while removing the errant screw I'll be booting it up tomorrow and running a few temperature tests to check I've got the heatsink seated properly. Actually is there anything else I can do in addition to running a mild stress test & checking the temps that the CPU has to tell whether the heatsink is seated correctly? I'm also a little worried about the GPU it's the first one I've had which is so darn huge, and it feels like its gonna mess up the airflow, anyways first I need to get this baby to boot up. Assuming it does will post a pic for advice on cabling and airflow.
  8. Snapped a quick pic of the now deceased old GPU Does anyone have the technical expertise to be able to look at that pic and tell me what the lightly charred part of the board is. There doesn't really seem to be any real resource for identifying what all the different parts of a modern circuit board are. My best guess atm is that is a blown resistor, leading to what might be a chip of some kind >_< Yeah I really kinda clueless here
  9. Booted the system from a Hirens boot CD and are running a few of the diagnostics, with all the case panels removed so the rig is just a skeleton . My plan going forwards is thus: -Finish running Memtest -run a check on the CPU -plug in a old spare GPU and run gpuz If all that comes back ok then I'll -remove old CPU heatsink -install new CPU heatsink and fan -Test CPU -Install the new system fans The new Heatsinks gonna be the most fussy part which is why I'm leaving the following steps untill I'm sure it's seated properly and running cool. -hook up system HDD & test -hook up storage HDD & test Finally -install new GPU Then I'll seal up the case again and hopefully be back in bussiness. Any extra steps people think I should throw into the mix? Also my MB has 3 system fan controllers, but this configuration will have 4 fans. 2x exhaust: 1x top, 1x back top 2x intake: 1x front, 1x bottom front Is it best to not bother with running the fans from the MB in this case since I can't get all 4 on there or would something like, having on of the intakes (probably the front) running on full speed independant of the MB and the other 3 fan controlled by the MB?
  10. I now know how those apes in 2001 felt. No mere foam packing for this piece of artisanal electronics, the PSU came in Velour Bag with gold lettering..... The cables are all separate in a two pocket canvas bag. What I'm going to do with these things once it's installed I really don't know.
  11. April Fool's Roundup

For anyone who plays wow this is a impressively detailed April fools patch note. http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/12371977139
  12. April Fool's Roundup

Oh man, I would not like to be in your shoes. On a brighter note Blizzard seems to be attacking April fools day with its normal polish http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/games/outcasts/
  13. anime

Tbh the big thing which therew me was the word "committee" it just sounds weirdly bureaucratic phrase to be associated with a club about something you love!
  14. April Fool's Roundup

I tend to stay clear of social media on April 1st because things just get to a weird almost fevered intensity at times, as people do their best to channel each & very one of the archetypal responses you just described (often at the same time). I do really enjoy a good newspaper April fools though (& that google one is pretty rad).

I'd say perhaps they are no worse than the problems suffered by just about every western mass communication medium, and agree with N1njaSquirrel that we see anime (at least initially) from a outsiders cultural viewpoint. Japan one of the countries most insulated from the smoothing effects of globalisation so there are far more jagged edges to its culture than we are used to. That leads to a certain amount of fetishisation of the parts of anime that deviate most from our own cultural norms because people will often be attracted to them just by their contrast from what they are used to. This in turn leads to exaggeration of those trends within the wider community because of the loud often fanatical voices of their devotees. I'm old enough that when I went to Uni there was very few anime available legally in the UK, so a anime society at Uni would probably just been a few people watching Akira & Ghost in the Shell on repeat

I'm going show my ignorance by asking this N1njaSquirrel, but what the hell is a anime committee?
  17. The PSU I wanted was out of stock and in a moment of madness I ordered this top of the line, hand crafted work of art. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-027-SS It has a 7 YEAR WARRANTY! In 7 years I'll probably be a brain in a jar strapped to a Google branded big dog, living my life in the FaceRift, but at least in that future dystopia I'll have the comfort of knowing my desktop PSU is covered.
  18. My main prob is that the GTX 750ti though perfect for what I want is a pretty new line from nvidia, so all these variants on it haven't really had much of a chance to be tested in the wild. Ideally I would have liked to be able to come in and look at what people had experienced with a larger sample of the production models to see if anyone had issues like you did with your Palit card. Tbh though the biggest point in the favour of the MSI is that's its a "Twin Frozr" & I remember the thumbs getting one when they put together their rig right after the kickstarter & always thought it was a awesomely stupid name.
  19. Thanks for the suggestion cyrix those are both quite similar to what I'm looking at atm. I've spent the whole day reading reviews and now I'm knackered, shopping to rebuild a dead PC feels like studying for a exam, with a added knowledge that failure is going to be accompanied by the smell of burning plastic. Currently looking at a Seasonic G-550 for PSU http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-seasonic-g-550-hybrid-modular-80-plus-gold-eps-12v-12cm-silnt-fan-atx-psu & considering 2 variants on the GTX 750 ti for the GPU http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-palit-gtx-750-ti-stormx-dual-28nm-pcie-30-6008mhz-gddr5-gpu-1202mhz-boost-1281mhz-cores-640-vga- http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-msi-gtx-750ti-gaming-twin-frozriv-oc-pcie-30-5400mhz-gddr5-gpu-1085mhz-boost-1163mhz-cores-640-d The Palit one has more oomph but the Msi one (which I s basically the baby brother of the one you linked) is quiter, draws less power, and runs cooler. As for my current setup I have a i5-3570k with a stock heatsink as my CPU & 8gb of decent speed DDR3, along with a hybrid ssd/conventional boot disc, and a 2nd 1tb drive for storage, all sitting inside a Coolermaster cm690. The old GPU was a sapphire Radeon 7750hd 1gb, & the PSU 430w. My display is a my old but much loved formac 20" so I'm not running that high resolution atm, but want a bit of extra leeway for the future. Have been thinking of going the extra mile and doing a bit of upgrade since I've got the case open too. Considering grabbing a a few Antec truequiet 120mm fans to replace the stock ones in the case plus a Coolermaster Hyper Evo to replace the stock heatsink which should really reduce the case noise quite considerably. Plus maybe grabbing some after market dust filters for the cases intakes to hopefully extend the amount of time untill I have to do this stuff again.
  20. Listen well all so you can share in my idiocy and strive not to repeat it. Today my PC blackscreened on me. Perhaps the suddenness and completeness of its death should have clued me in that something major was afoot but for some reason my brain said "maybe the fuse has just blown", without asking itself the pertinent follow up which should have been "did the fuse blow for a good reason". So I changed the fuse and opened up the case so I could see my motherboards boot LEDs and perhaps diagnose the problem, plugged the PC back in & hit the on switch. I was greater by a flash of light and smoke, and the unmistakable smell of burning plastic from my GPU. To cut this long story short, my GPU & PSU are now both dead. If I'd only twigged the PSU was the fault immediately I could have removed it & avoided frying my GPU So ladies and gents, I'm in the market for a new PSU and GPU. Suggestions would be welcome, ideally what I want is a solid mid range choice for both, nothing fancy but something from a decent manufacturer. Particularly I'd welcome suggestions of GPU's with low heat , sound and temp output (though I'd ideally still want a active one rather than a fat ass passive one). Any and all help appreciated, I want to try and put a order in tomorrow evening and get this all done ASAP since I do most of my work on this machine.
  21. I think part of Free to Play that most caught my attention was HyHy's struggle. While Dendi's history is certainly a tough one, it is still something in his past and thus less dramatic because its a static event, where as HyHy's problems were very much of the present, and not only that very much of his own making. HyHy felt like the player who had the biggest choices to make outside the game and the biggest consequences to those choice. Overall it seemed to give a good overview of the type of stories and drama that occur in pro gaming, but without ever taking a deep dive on those stories it presented which was frustrating.
  22. anime

I think (obviously in some ways) there are more anime adaptations of books by Japanese Authors than of western ones, I mean I didn't realise until this got me looking into it that both Paprika and The Girl Who Leapt Though Time were both adaptations of books written by the same author, or that Grave of the Fireflies was based on a novel and I'd say all of those are stronger than Gankutsuou,.Additionally as soon as we turn our attention to the Japan's own book market it hard to ignore the strength and depth of adaptations of Light Novels that can be found in anime. However a lot depends on where we classify the "Light Novel", because whether or not they pass your test of "not having a preferred visual mode" can vary hugely. But if I force myself to purely consider western adaptations that fit your criteria its admittedly a lot harder to think of anything, and while Howl's Moving Castle springs to mind immediately for me I know not everyone is fond of that one (not to mention its a film and not a series). The below would probably sum up where I stand on it in the end which is a far less dramatic statement I'll admit, but still impressive. On the series itself. After re-watching Gankutsuou I'm pretty convinced it owe's at least part of its visual design to the Stars My Destination, although I'm doing a bit of a double check to make sure by listening to a audio book of the original Monte Christo. But so far it seems the markings on the counts face, and the design of the space docks are clear lifts from it. Also did they ever give any explanation to why when they thought someone was about to be lethally poisoned they didn't just phone them or call the police/ambulance? or for that matter any explanation at all of why society had devolved to this once again aristocratic situation? One of the things I love about The Stars My Destination is that it's own world of super rich dynasties and high society was all a believable reaction to a few very specific and carefully explained technological leaps forward, there's no such sense in Gankutsuou. Society seems to be the way it is because that's what's required for them to transpose the plot. Edit: I may have stayed up till now (03:00 gmt) just to watch the Kill la Kill finale, I do not regret this since it delivered pretty much everything you could want from it.
  23. Free to play: The Movie

Pretty much sums up my feelings on it too, solid piece of work overall but I wonder who it aimed at.
  24. Life

If it makes anyone feel better about any tribailsm about science I'm currently at the apex of a magnificent rush of old school sport tribalism. My team just won vs 'the old rivals' and no matter how logical a person I want to think of myself as I just feel giddy, I fact probably the happiest I've been for a long, long time. All my worries about work, about relationships, about my life in general have just vanished(for now). Just being part of a tribal group and celebrating something that matters to you is a incredibly intoxicating feeling. You feel part of something greater than yourself, elevated by the knowledge you are part of a group, and by the greatness of individuals you could never match yourself. Side note: 0-3!
  25. anime

I've been thinking of re-watching that series since one of my favourite books of all time is The Stars My Destination (itself a Sci-Fi re imagining of Monte Cristo). What classes as a "Literary Work" for this purpose btw? If plays like Romeo & Juliet count, does ballet/opera also qualify(in which case I'd suggest Princess Tutu/Swan Lake as a great adaptation)? In terms of plain (non literary) adaptations there's also a ton of stuff from more modern novels which could be thrown into the mix.
