  1. Other podcasts

After it was mentioned on one of the 3MA episodes I've been listening to a lot of David Carlin's Hardcore History. Despite its terrible title it's actually been my go to choice for when I just want to sit down and relax for the last couple of weeks, because (as Carlin himself puts it) he's a fan of history and not a historian. It feels like this gives him a certain amount of licence to look at both sides of a story without feeling the need to pick sides, that and his manner make it feel far less formal than the history podcast I've heard in the past. I was wondering if any of the reader had a good suggestion's for similar casts, having something long form like this has been a godsend for me when I can't sleep.
  2. Cartoons!

Have decided in light of the how much I admired the craft in Tarzan, I have decided to follow it up by watching a few more of Disney's offerings on amazon prime. Tonight it's the Princess and the Frog, so far it remains equally impressive craft wise, we've had at least 3 distinct art styles on show and I've actually laughed out loud at a jazz alligator, & some really nice work with silhouettes. I'll admit neither have been particularly impressive in terms of story (although some of the character work has been quite nice) but it does make me sad Disney never made itself a 'skunkworks' studio just to produce smaller investment high risk work focused on developing the craft.

I don't think we necessarily should label Trolls as Sociopaths, but i do think it's useful to label the behaviour as sociopathic when it isn't a isolated incident. I think what I'm trying to say there's value in saying "this person is consistently acting in certain way that matches the symptoms of this condition". It doesn't mean we are making a definitive diagnosis but by using a label it encourages us to treat the behaviour as problem, which in turn imply a need to for it to be controlled by the individual concerned. Iirc the problem is the consensus on this is that true sociopathy is a mix of nature and nurture. So the actual levels of potential sociopaths in the general population is actually probably a lot higher than most people think because unless those individuals are also exposed to certain environmental and behavioural factors it won't develop. People sometimes bring up the fact that many trolls are "kids" as a reason to see this behaviour as some sort of youthful aberration, but in many ways its absolutely the worst time that anyone who has any of the genetic predispositions to be exposed to it.
  4. right gonna try that now crossing fingers! Edit: Rebooted successfully without the updates trying to install themselves. Don't consider myself completely out of the woods, but this a good step in the right direction
  5. Tnx Jon i've been frantically googling since that last post & have come across a couple of people who suggest the same sort of method does this look like it is correct?

Honestly I think much of the behaviour displayed by trolls on twitter could easily fit the definition of sociopathic behaviour, I know it's a serious label to throw about, but honestly it feels like when this behaviour is sustained for long period the correct response is to treat it as serious problem and label it as such.
  7. So i've found out what the problem is, it is as i should have guessed from the start all MS's fault. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/blue-screen-stop-0x50-after-applying-update/6da4d264-02d8-458e-89e2-a78fe68766fd?page=1 KB2982791 and KB2970228 Are apparently the offending updates, my problem now is the only restore point i have now is one where they are allready downloaded & in the update que, which thanks to MS being SUUUPER smart means that (if i'm understanding what i've read correctly) even if i switch updates off they will still install & feck up my pc again the moment i try to shut down. So what i now need to do is to find a way to delete those updates.

I may be wrong but I think the watchdog/ferguson article that seems to have triggered the harassment of Danielle that John Cole mentions also had Charlie Halls name attached to it. If he received less harassment than she did over it we could perhaps draw a somewhat raw conclusion regarding who trolls will target.I think the term sociopath is actually probably being correctly (if perhaps a little over dramatically) used as a shorthand for someone who is showing a chronic lack of empathy..
  9. Cartoons!

I remember feeling the same sort of way about Aladdin, but I think part of that comes from it being the last film I ever saw in the cinema with my parent's before I became a surely teenager too embarrassed to be accompanied by them.
  10. Cartoons!

After a incredibly shitty day fixing a broken down PC I needed something unrelentingly happy and optimistic to cheer myself up, so I fired up Disney's Tarzan on amazon prime. I'm not sure if it's because the majority of animation I watch these days are anime which are prone to taking shortcuts for both budget and stylistic reasons but damn, I'm not sure if I was just to young to appreciate but the way Disney animate movement is really impressive.
  11. Atm that would probably pretty good I'm thinking of trying the steps listed here http://thebackroomtech.com/2010/08/28/windows-xp-or-windows-7-wont-boot-into-safe-mode/ Since iirc I should be able to get to the repair console by booting from the install dvd
  12. Ok so today I got hit with a nasty BSOD, my computer won't fire up windows even in safe mode, just crashing to a blue screen which shows a win32k.sys + page fault in non paged area message. A quick google suggest this normally referees to a hardware error but after running every hardware test I could through Hiren's Boot CD everything is coming up clean, I've also tried using a system repair & system restore from the win7 install disk with no luck. Atm my hunch is the windows install corrupted itself after the update that ran last night, hence all the hardware coming up as fine, though that doesn't explain why the system restore point doesn't work. The only way I can think to proceed now is to see if it could be a registergy error of some sort, though honestly idk enough about that to feel confident. So anyway if any tech minded thumbs can throw me some suggestions for next step to take I'd appreciate it
  13. Feminism

That's actually a kinda interesting question, i remember there was some mention on the Anime thread a while back about female penned Yaoi being incredibly popular with girls in Japan and yet having some really weird misogynistic tendencies, is it in a weird way kind of a way for a young woman to have their own 'phantom penis' and to try out what it's like to inhabit the male cultural role. You know I think there's the essence of kinda a great idea there, sex education has always been hamstrung by how incredibly difficult it is to talk about the subject without seeming preachy. I think the closes I've seen to someone trying to execute on this sort of concept is actually the game How do you do it? and the subject as a whole is something which Cara Ellison wrote about quite interestingly on RPS.

I didn't actually realise Eden & Eve were from the same studio, guess the title should have clued me in >_<, honestly the art style of Eden always looked more like Honey & Clover to me. (A series which being a ex art student I absolutely love). I've watched a few episodes of Dandy this season & annoyingly it seems to be going the same way as least season for me, moments i absolutely love but actually bored by the majority of it. I feel it tries so hard to be funny sometimes it ends up collapsing under its own weight. I was actually tempted to watch a bit of MGNK, if only because I'm such a sucker for a lightweight comedies. I've also watched a few episodes of Aldnoah Zero which is basically a high budget impressively put together but so far pretty unoriginal series. It sorta like eating a good frozen pizza, you know its mass produced junk but you find yourself reaching for another slice all the same.

As i said I'm not sure it's primary purpose fits with what technically constitutes pornography but I'm pretty sure if it was 'real' people acting out the stories it would be classed as such.
  16. Feminism

I think "these are not real people thing" can go either way. I read a semi pornographic webcomic called Oglaf which is A: Utterly ungrounded in reality & B: Illustrated by a woman & C: Extremely funny. think those qualities although not exclusive to something that is drawn are all things which would make a 'real' version of it A: Hard to Produce, B: Less likely to represent a female viewpoint & C: Tougher to laugh at. Honestly, it demystifies sex, laughs it's absurdities, and is generally playful and positive about it (as well as dealing more than happily with pretty much every sexual orientation) I can't help but feel that its the type of representation of sex I feel there should be more of (although you could argue it's not truly pornography since it doesn't primarily aim to arouse).
  17. Life

In a way what you say reminds me of why I value this thread. Reading it from time to time has helped me to stop just dismissing the way I feel about something because on some level I felt it logically shouldn't bother me, that there were more important things going on with the world. To push back against my desire to live up to some almost quasi-philosophical idea that as a rational human being I should be capable of stopping some little day to day annoyance from dominating my mind. That's not to say the stuf going on in Ferguson, or Gaza, or the Ukraine, or Iraq, or syria isn't horrific, it's just none of us is a empathic superperson and that's nothing to be ashamed of.
  18. anime

We seem to be experiencing quite a slow anime season about the only comment on the current crop I've really seen was NS a few pages back Is this something to do with the time of year? idk if there's really is any patterns to the sort of shows that come around in any particular season, but this one seems to be if not a dud then a slow burner at the very least. I've watched a bit of Zankyou no Terror and it's been improving consistently but I'm still unsure if it's just going to do anything interesting with the characters it's building or if in the end it's just going to disappointing me.
  19. DOTA 2

I had a weird bug where the stream wasn't showing up on the iOS twitch app, so had to watch it on my pc

No matter how good the 3.3 dub is it will have to do something spectacular to redeem that film Besides I wonder if now the excitement around 3.3 has long died down, any official release i would be devalued. The hype that existed when Eva 3.3 was released is something that You Can(not) Redo.
  21. DOTA 2

In addition to Potato Day I'm rooting for 'Venomancer? I hardly knew her', because I really enjoyed their turnaround victory in game 1 (& also because their Brits & therefore all their games are actually at times I can actually watch live.
  22. anime

That it's using so many people associated with Sword of the Stranger and promoting a different way of getting a well produced OVA/pilot episode are very strong plus points, but that it's gone for the whole "high school girls doing sexy action stuff" as it's plot is a big down point. That said it did give me a excuse to watch that fight seen again, & honestly the title of that you tube video isn't far wrong, & SotS wasn't the most original premise either. So perhaps i'll keep a eye on it & might actually throw a few quid at it.
  23. Life

I think the fact that I didn't see it coming is why I stayed calm, if I'd seen it running at me it would have been far harder to not to panic or act aggressive myself. But all in all, it could have been far worse, almost all of the bad things that could have happened didn't.
  24. Life

There's what's called "the dangerous dogs act" in the uk, but the likelihood is there's no easy way to identify the people who owned this dog, they were a good distance from me & I could only give a vague description of them and of the dog (brown, quite squat, and with a jowly face, a bit pitbulish i guess? but idk dog breeds enough and it din't stick around for long enough for me to say with any certainty). It's possible because of the way the landscape and hedges create line of sight that the owners didn't know I was there until I crested the hill, that plus the fact I just have a nasty bruise on my ankle and nothing more would make me uncomfortable about pressing charges even if they could be identified.
  25. Life

Got randomly attacked by a dog while on my lunchtime walk today, if that sounds overly dramatic that's because it is slightly. "worried" is perhaps more accurate a term because thankfully it didn't break the skin on my ankle, but it was still a bit of a shock to be walking along in the sun listening to ep 170 & suddenly feel a sharp pain on my ankle and look down and see a dog there. It seemed more excited than vicious but still I wasn't keen on testing that so I tried to in a nice calm tone of voice and calm it a little, saying"hello there, what are you after" and backing away, the dog immediately hared off down to the bottom of the playing field (I'm not sure what the correct term for this sort of thing is US readers but basically its green public land) I was walking across to its owners. I decided i didn't want to make a fuss because A: i had no idea if they could see what their dog was up to from down there & B: I really didn't want to get bitten again (and this time properly). After getting home I took of my sock's & checked my ankle, thankfully although there were two red marks & a the beginnings of a bruise it's clear the skin wasn't broken, but all the same I got some anti-septic soap out & cleaned the area. Gave my GP a quick call to check that was ok and thankfully was reassured as long as the skins not broken there's nothing to worry about. Ended up making a quick phonecall to the non-urgent police number for my local force, and spending a quick 5 mins explaining what happened to a very helpful operator while saying to her, that i didn't feel any follow up was needed unless there had been other reports in the area. It felt the right thing to do, I'm a relatively strong, big adult who kept calm, but if the same thing had happened to someone smaller, who had panicked maybe it wouldn't have ended quite the same. That said i'm prob going to be jumpy for the next few weeks around any dog i run into off it's leash on a walk.
