  1. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

I fell like there must be at least a intent to create justification (no matter how incompetent or half hearted)for this to work, this isn't just about orphaning responsibility but about shifting it to something the creator thinks gives themselves a defence against any criticism.
  2. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

How about the Bene Gesserit from Dune? At the very least it feels like Mass Effects choice of a race of psychics who are engaged in a certain amount of selective breeding is perhaps just a more liberated take on what herbet did.
  3. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

did we mention it has a deep and meaningful backstory?
  4. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

I sorta agree with you on this one, but it might be just we are giving it a easy ride because the overall fiction of Eva is generally well put together, & How well put together a backstory is overall shouldn't matter in a way, only if the creator has decided that they want to show a bit of skin and are using that backstory to justify their decision.
  5. anime

Throw in a nice Italian or Spanish beer to wash it down and you're pretty much Golden. If you get as far as the 2nd episode Keep your eyes peeled for just how well put together the little dance scene that crops up is, since i feel it is pretty damn good by pretty much any standard you want to hold it to. (I may be re-watching a episode as I type, and picking up some extra little details I missed the 1st time)

Look just give in, I'm honestly as puzzled as the next guy as to how this turned out to as good as it has been so far, and perhaps by the end of the series it will undo every bit of good work it's done in the 1st five episodes. My current theory is that a big budget, plus source material who's world building framework is already established without being too fleshed out or specific is actually kinda perfect for giving someone the opportunity to concentrate on having fun with the details.

This is the series which brought up my thinking on the whole demoness trope, in the BGBS thread, I'm not sure if that helps or hindersSidenote: which was particularly frustrating because they seemingly deliberately contrast it with what is one of the least sexualised costumes I've seen on a lead female character for a while
  10. anime

On a whim I watched a couple of episodes of Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, which I was expecting to be pretty much utter trash but was actually a pretty lively, well animated, and with some nice world building touches guilty pleasure. Imagine Berserk mixed with Space Dandy with a strong Mediterranean rather than Northern European flavour and you wouldn't be far wrong. I think Twig might enjoy it because it hits some of the same 'generic fantasty' notes that Log Horizon does with just enough variation and self awareness to be enjoyable.

Speaking of Lilith....i think someone raised it earlier but do characters like Rei Ayanami from Eva who have moments when they are portrayed as either unaware or heedless of social norms regarding nakedness included?
  12. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

I think what I was getting at is that in a way the whole succubus thing had to start somewhere, and that whoever made the choice to create these fictional creatures made a choice that externalise the sexual, basically doing the same thing that I feel like the BGB trope might be based around, & I think perhaps thought because the idea of external emotional personification is so deeply embedded in fiction it doesn't count. To try and explain myself better i guess it best to look at what's come before and say that where Gorm & Dium have said this about their internal definitions of this my internal BGB definition is something like: BGB: where a creator (consciously or unconsciously) attempts to retroactively create a external (non sexual) force or event existing outside the main narrative, which is used to justify a characters explicitly sexually appearance or behaviour
  13. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

Does pretty much any 'demonic' female character who is either completely naked or clad in some variation of boobplate count? Since the explanation that usual gets thrown about is 'demons are creatures of sin'. Which of course doesn't quite explain why all the male ones are weirdly inhuman or deformed ways and all the females are just a naked lady with some bat wings Sidenote:I like my ipad autocorrected 'boobplate' to 'bookplate' Edit: now I think more about it a bit more I think the whole demon thing might actually be relevant but in a totally different way to what I originally thought. What people seem to be saying is that the BgBS is all about a creator taking a characteristic they have chosen for a individual, and then attempting to say that they did not make a choice about the individual they made a choice about the contex/environment, and that choice is what makes the character act/dress the way it does thus absolving the artist from any blame for the end result. Which means for me it feels like when someone says ' I didn't create a sexualised lady, her environment just made her that way' they are echoing the old medieval idea of these external forces being responsible (Demons, The Devil etc) for things. Like they are saying the character was basically fated to become sexy, that there was never any other course they could have gone down somehow. Which in turn is kinda creepy as all hell because it's moving some of the characters own agency towards their sexuality, they don't choose to be sexy it just kinda happens to them
  14. Probably the best attempt to do justice to the interacting/developing a lexicon with aliens theme i can think of is a iOS/andriod game called Ledoliel it's far from perfect and sometimes it just feels like your not being given a fair chance but still there's not all that many thinks out there that even attempt to do what it does, and i really like the clean black and white vector art work, although they do look a bit like villains from Hellraiser (who's name i shall not even attempt to spell ), which is perhaps apropriate because boy do they love killing you in horrible ways. killscreen does a better job than i do giving a quick summary of it http://killscreendaily.com/articles/ledoliel/
  15. Manga Thread of Reading Comics Backwards

I've been reading a few more Tezuka Budda recently and I'm only just starting to get a sense of just how damn good and how important he is. Its amazing the stuff he was doing with pacing, and framing, not to mention just his sheer storytelling chops. So its a shame to see that kickstarter really struggling for traction, looking at it i feel like if they had focused on getting one series out, and really sold why that work was important within the Tezuka canon it might have stood a better chance, as it feels like they are sorta going for a scatter gun approach (& their pricing model feels a bit weird too). I'm sure they had legit reasons for going the approach they did, but sadly they key things in a succesfull kickstarter are a nice low entry point, a pitch which can be easily spread by social media, both of which build the most important thing of all, momentum. and it really feels this campaign is a miss on all those things
  16. Life

My dads retiring this week which since it happens to also roughly coincide with his birthday (with my sisters following next week) means of got a busy week of family stuff upcoming. Me and my sis are going to take him and my mum out for a nice meal which I hope will be a nice gesture after all they have done for us over the years, but on a more basic level it will simply just be legitimately nice to get the family together in a way that doesn't happen too often to have a couple of days celebrating stuff. Its also made me realise i think i prefer celebrating other peoples birthdays etc far my than i do my own in a way i couldn't contemplate when i was a kid, i wonder if that's just something we all get to a extent as we get older.
  17. Political games?

On the multiplayer side there Neptunes pride, as mentioned above. Although that actually is a game I literally need months to recover from a game of (but have a 100% win record ) or theres the hellish charms of Solium Infernum which I ahve sadly not played but which has a great deal of good things written about it. All of tberton's Boardgame recommendations are pretty solid. On the more prosaic side of politics theres the single player charms of The Political Machine, or the Democracy series (both of which I find rather dry).

As far as I'm aware it's a no, seems she is just supposed to be naturally 'handsome' & charismatic and enjoy playing up to the attention that brings her. IRC she's in love with her impossibly competent drama club president guy. In fact sadly think by the end of the first series all but one person has been quasi happily paired up with someone else whos attention they stubbornly refuse to either notice for one reason or another. It's particularly weird that one guy who isn't paired up is supposed to be base for Nozaki's heroine and yet he's the only one who seems to have absolutely no romantic progression.
  19. Life

Spent the whole weekend and a good part of today painting what was a shared storage room, in preparation for it becoming a shared office. Just one more wall to go and we can start throwing shelves and a big old plan chest in and have a proper work space for the first time for a long time. I'm exhausted but optimistic

  21. I'm actually running Vuze 5.3 atm, the reason I've been looking around for a alternative is that its been pestering me to update to 5.4 (& I've had bad experiences with other programs being ruined by update and being unable to revert), but there's actually a lot i like about it (like the simple ability to move a file to a different folder once its complete downloading). I may just create a restore point & try 5.4, or maybe try qtorrent. It's frustrating through feature creep ruins so many things, like I'm still running a version of facebook months old on my ipad just because i don't want the message function as a separate app
  22. anime

Ok maybe I over exaggerated the fall of Watanabe because (& believe me I never thought I'd say this) I just watched a legitimately superb episode of Space Dandy. I'd been putting off watching more of S2 for a while because I'd been so underwhelmed by most of S1, but episode 5 of this 2nd season was legitimately old school bebop good (6 wasn't to shabby either).
  23. anime

I remember watching H&C a year or two after coming out of uni and although some of the characters in H&C are far from great (particularly Hagu) it really did a number on me in terms of capturing a weird sort of idealised art's uni nostalgia, & captured the whole uncertainty that comes from transitioning from a young person to a actual factual adult.
  24. anime

I was assuming that when Gorm said "romance subplot" he wanted whatever romance the show has to be based on a relationship we see built up deliberately and prominently, and not shoehorned in against the flow of the narrative or ever under threat of it turning into yet another harem when some random supporting character suddenly becoming enamoured with the male lead. But yes, there is a lot to like about that series, although at times it does tread a fine line between parody and straight up cliché. Spoiler for the finale Sidenote: that Gif's great
