  1. Free to play: The Movie

It doesn't measure up to the King of Kong (what does?), but I enjoyed the MInecraft documentary that 2 Player Productions did a few years ago.
  2. There's one called idlethumbs that doesn't see much use in my experience. The guild chat for dotatoda seems to get a little more use, but still not much.
  3. I just wrapped up my 50th match and am at the point where I'm almost always one of the strongest players in the match when randoming in limited heroes, so I feel like I'm ready to move on to another game mode. Are any of them particularly well suited to new-ish players? The combination of eight other game modes and almost 90 heroes I've barely seen presents a pretty daunting challenge.
  4. Also, here's a slideshow that contains some photos of the wedding robot: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052970204603004577271842684404260
  5. Thanks Nick for mentioning that 4-way Super Metroid speed run. It was as good as advertised.
  6. Gone Home from The Fullbright Company

    Quality name for that publisher:
  7. The threat of Big Dog

I'm not a man of violence, but if a weird hexacopter drone started menacing me like that I would have no qualms about smashing it to bits.
  8. Bioshock Finite: Irrational Games shuts down

Polygon has a feature up today that lays out the chronology of the last couple years of Irrational. It also has quotes from a number of former employees that, for me, raise more questions than they answer.
  9. I vaguely remember Sean saying in one of the Day Z streams that there might be some sort of reveal at GDC, which is the week after next. My memory may be completely wrong, though. Also, it's great to have Nick back. Congrats on the Walking Dead episode release, Nick!
  10. Dota 2 vs Heroes of the Storm

I find it really interesting that the WC3 modding / map-making community basically spawned two brand new genres with DOTA and WC3 Tower Defense. For a game that wasn't quite able to match how huge Broodwar and Diablo II were in the multiplayer scene, it's amazing how influential it ended up being.
  11. That was awesome, great job.
  12. Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight 2014

    Day 10 is up:
  13. Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight 2014

I was really impressed by what I saw of all four prototypes in the stream today.
  14. Chris Roberts' new space combat sim

They're unveiling the dog-fighting alpha the night before PAX East (10 April) at an event in Boston, and I believe it will be in the hands of backers very soon thereafter. They had a timeline for subsequent beta tests of the MMO portion and the single-player campaign, and I believe even a projected final release date, but I don't believe that they've updated those since the alpha was pushed from late last year to this Spring.
  15. Chris Roberts' new space combat sim

I'm kinda hesitant to bring this thread back from the dead, but I find the scope of this project fascinating. It's basically a AAA crowd-funded game at this point, and I'm not sure what to make of that. Heck, they even have their own reality show now, which is really weird. Has anyone else been following this project?
  16. Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight 2014

2012's videos were behind a paywall on the humblebundle site until very recently. This year they've just been releasing them via Double Fine's YouTube channel.
  17. DOTA 2

Yeah, I ended up playing something a bunch more games and haven't encountered any other issues.
  18. DOTA 2

So I played my first match against actual people today and I find myself really confused. The last part of the tutorial is to play 10 limited heroes matches against actual people. I got placed into such a match, choose Warlock because the rest of my team consisted of three carries and a Windranger and I figured we needed a support. We pretty much immediately had one person per side disconnect, their characters were taken over by bots, and for some reason the other side's vengeful spirit bot was invulnerable to damage. This forced us to basically abandon the bottom lane that was being pushed by an invincible bot lord and concentrate on the other two lanes. Somehow, we managed to break through mid at about the same time invincibot broke through bottom and we just barely destroyed their ancient first. Is this as weird a first experience as it seemed to me? Should I expect to encounter a lot of these sorts of bugs?
  19. I have zero Dota 2 experience and would be interested in something like this to dip my toes in the water.
  20. Games giveaway

Here's a list of stuff that's wallowing unused in my Steam or Humble accounts that could use a good home: Bioshock I giftable Steam copy Poker Night at the Inventory I (a Rodkin / Vanaman joint) giftable Steam copy The Walking Dead Season I Steam key Humble THQ Bundle (Darksiders, Red Faction: Armageddon, Metro 2033, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor) Steam key Saints Row: The Third Steam key Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War I Steam key Strike Suit Zero Steam key Legend of Grimrock Steam key Hotline Miami Steam key Brütal Legend two Steam keys Battlefield 3 Origin key Dead Space 3 Origin key
  21. Was that either of the Terminal Velocity spiritual successors, Fury3 or Hellbender?
  22. Replayable Narratives: Does Anyone Even Play a Game Once?

The part I find seductive about the "narrative LEGO blocks" concept isn't replay-ability, it's the potential for the one play-through that I'm actually likely to complete being novel and my own, and the conversations that it's likely to spark with other folks who have played the game. As to whether or not re-playable narrative is something that game developers should strive for more broadly, I don't think there's a yes or no answer to the question. Developers should pursue the avenues of game design that interest them. Sometimes what results will be a success and sometimes a failure, but that process is what grows and matures the medium.
