Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
Sno replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
It looks flashy and well produced for a fan-game, but those stages look terrible. It is really, really bizarre that Capcom chose this fan game as the one to get behind. It really seems like Capcom just desperately wanted to have something out there for Megaman's 25th anniversary, and was wise enough to realize that their own iOS autorunner definitely wasn't going to cut it. *Is still grumpy about how MML3 was canned.* -
He's also been trying to make ZoE3 for years, and it looks like it's finally going through, but it seems to be happening without him.

So i've been curious, does the release of Far Cry 3 affect anybody's lists here? Also, upon further reflection, i think Xenoblade was really my game of 2012.

There was a thread for the game, a bunch of us played it. I even called it one of my favorite games of the year in the goty thread.

Hideo Kojima is trapped in a prison of his own design. He keeps saying he's done with Metal Gear, and he keeps making more Metal Gear.
-
Their goal will be the creation of a third Freedom Force game.

We certainly could, let's see how everybody feels about it once things start up and adjust it from there. Again on spoilers, I am in agreement on this. We should spoiler-tag colossus strategies, seeing as figuring out the best way to fight them is pretty much what the game is entirely about. So story discussion and colossus strategies should be spoiler-tagged and labeled with descriptive prefixes, i guess. That should work. Probably also a rule for not discussing things ahead of what the schedule is, so if you jump ahead, don't talk about it.

This is actually an important point to talk about, since it might just be the issue of HD lag. HDTV's have not been a good thing for games, and when you go back to games designed to be played on CRT's, they were not built with that lag in mind and generally have tighter input windows. It can result in a noticeably harder time with the game when playing it on an HDTV. Even on a lot of modern games though, if you play things like shoot em` ups or fighters, HD lag is the bane of your existence. (In a fighting game, say you have an input window of five frames or less, if the TV is creating a delay of nearly two frames, you're kind of being fucked.) Things can get even weirder when you go into the minutia. A good HDTV with the proper settings might have only the smallest split second of lag on the 1080i settings it's been optimized for. Now flip it back to 480i, it hasn't been optimized for that at all, and you can end up with actual noticeable lag in the worst case scenarios. With that consideration, you guys on the HD version are probably still going to have an easier time than i will. In general though, if you guys have never set up your TVs for their fast response modes, you'd do well to look into that. (It's usually a "game" mode or something, it will disable a lot of the processing the image goes through to reduce the lag.) Also, that whole thing about TV's being sold with "4ms" response times is BS, it has virtually nothing to do with HD lag. The actual lag is usually way worse than they would be willing to advertise, you have to do a lot of digging to get real numbers and figure out the best way to optimize your TV. (Best case scenario is that you find you're magically way better at games than you thought you were.)

That sounds like a plan. Also, apparently i don't have component cables for my PS2, so i will be playing in classy old 480i. Nnngh. (The PS2 version does support progressive scan, i just don't have the cables for it.) I do have my old save though, and i have the hard difficulty unlocked unlocked, so i'm going to do that. Edit: Gaah, i loaded up an old game to test things out, and I can't even make out any detail on Wander's face, it's just a smear of colors.

One thing i'd urge you guys to remember is to allow time for a bit of exploration. If you're not hunting for those stamina and health upgrades, some of the later colossi can be pretty painful. As for the schedule, i think the important thing is that if you don't feel like you can keep up, don't try, but do keep playing. Story discussion should be spoilered at all times to allow people to continue participating even if they've fallen a bit behind. Two weeks though, are we happy about two week intervals?

Actually, reading up on this game while writing up the game club pitch, i came across an interview where Ueda talked about Team Ico struggling to make Agro feel like a real horse, which doesn't always immediately obey, but without going so far in that direction that it would affect playability. So yeah, it was totally intentional. I'm just really, really wary of slowing this down that much, but if there's a demand for it, let's talk about it.

Independent isn't what i'd call it when she spends most of those three games fawning over Gordon for no particular reason in a completely one-sided relationship. There is no character arc there, she starts out way into Gordon and closes out the third game still way into Gordon, and never inbetween are you given any indication why. Alyx Vance is not a strong female character, she is nerd bait.

I might have to just go back and finish my Game Club playthrough of Killer 7 for my own edification and then make a couple posts about it, I really want to know if the ending holds up relative to my memories of it.

I wish i had a clever name for this, but i don't, so the Idle Forums Game Club it is. Anyways, Miffy suggested doing something like this, and i know i'd be interested in it, and a lot of you guys were saying you're sitting on unfinished/unplayed copies of Killer 7. I've actually finished the game but would actually really enjoy having a reason to go through it again, though i'm apprehensive about tarnishing my very positive memories of the game, having not played it since it came out. If you're reading this and are unfamiliar with the game - . It is an insane, dream-like mess, and is almost totally unconventional. There's not really any easy touchstones for explaining how the game works. It's a first-person shooter, but it's not an FPS. It's on rails, but you control where you're going. The design is all about contradictions. Probably the best way to describe the overall feel for the sum of the parts is that it creates something not unlike a survival horror game, which is understandable given the design pedigree. It was Goichi Suda's first game released in the US, and he's been quoted as calling it his proudest achievement. (It was also Suda's first collaboration with Shinji Mikami.) Even so, it's a game that can be really unevenly difficult and extremely obtuse, while the nigh incomprehensible story certainly isn't going to do it for everybody. It's bound to be a divisive experience. Two version of the game exist - The game was first released as a two disc game originally on the GameCube, which is the version i played and will be playing again. (Using my Wii's backwards compatibility, which is hardware-based compatibility and should be fine.) The PS2 version came later and i believe i remember hearing that it has some framerate problems, understandable given that the game was originally designed for the more powerful GameCube. (I don't know if the PS2 version is backwards compatible with any of the PS3's several hardware variants, if that's how you intend on going about it, you might want to read into that first.) So should we do this? How should we do this? I've checked up on the details, and the game is divided up into a lot of pretty clearly defined chunks, seven "targets" where some are further divided into multiple parts. I remember the game being very episodic, there should be a lot of good stopping and starting points. If we all did one part per week, that seems like it would probably be a good way to go about it. No skipping ahead, and no discussion of or spoilers regarding things beyond the current stage. So are people interested in doing this? Edit: It has begun! If you are participating or wish to participate, read up on the schedule and rules.

I remember spending hours trying to figure out the path for climbing up the exterior of the main tower in the game, then finding nothing up there after actually managing to pull it off, but still feeling awesome enough about it that i didn't care.

I guess i'll put together a thread. Anybody got any sweet Shadow of the Colossus trivia?

How is Aero Porter? It looks very, very straightforward, and the degree to which people have been going off about its difficulty makes me uneasy about it. The other one, Liberation Maiden, i quite liked. It's just very short and the huge amount of unskippable dialogue kills replayability.

Everything i've seen about this game makes me think of Lost. -
I've been playing Crimson Shroud too, it's an interesting little game. The only off-putting thing I've been finding is that the aesthetic is kind of unpleasantly muddy, the art assets are all a bit ugly. The UI can be a bit clunky as well. As for being a representation of a table top RPG, it's kind of not. It's kind of only half way there, and hangs on to a lot of elements of more traditional JRPGs. It's an interesting game though, well worth the price, i feel.

Sure sounds like it, right? Also, i like how it took the internet not even an hour to realize Phantom Pain was just MGS5. Of course, they were definitely meant to figure it out. Kojima knows his audience, he certainly got everybody talking about it.

Holy shit, i recognize that table on the left. I used to play the DOS version of this. -
I think i still have my old save for the game, i could probably do the crazy NG+ mode with all the extra items, i don't think i ever played through on that before. (I did previously do a hard mode run, i think that is a thrilling way to play that game.)
-
I think it was one of the best things i've played this year. Holy shit! Look at all those spoilers!

Maybe you have a point, but this isn't a dangerous precedent, fan-voted reversible covers are already a very common practice. If you've ever bought a game that has had a reversible cover, the odds are that there was a forum poll somewhere to appease somebody. Hell, the cover of the Collector's Edition for the first BIoShock was even fan-voted. It's not influence over the game, it's not even influence over the marketing, it's something that only fans will notice. It's so they can have something pretty to look at on their shelves and feel like they made their point. There's a big gulf between this and EA changing the ending of ME3.
