Playables of 2014

Recommended Posts

As the winter-solstice grows near, I find myself wanting to play a lot of the games that I enjoyed this year. Some of them were made by y'all. They are somewhat hard to find. This thread is intended to be a digest of all the playables made by forum-members this year. I want to encourage partial builds to be included. I happened upon PanzorFork's chilling laughing cube thing and that's exactly the type of thing that I want to be able to find in a yearly summary. My suggestion is to make a post and put all the playables you made in it. I plan to edit  my post when I release something else this year.

This thread is intended to make all the stuff we made this year easy to find, make decisions based off of that.

If you want to play this (I don't know why you would, this was a disaster) and you can't use the windows version from Glorious Trainwrecks, message me and I will fix it. I can't motivate myself to do it unless someone else wants to actually see it.

Congrats on all the games! Lots of neat stuff to dig through.

Weirdly, all of mine this year were remakes/reinterpretations/parodies of existing works, each playing with agency and what it means to win or lose within broken systems.

Here are a few things I made:

Journey of Fate

Pixel Colony

The Assassination

thanksgivingame?!

Feels kind of underwhelming to see them all lined up like this. I guess most of my work was done on little prototypes and unfinished ideas. Creating more finished stuff will have to be a goal for next year, I suppose.

Clyde, it was cool to follow the progression of your music-games from the dancing one up to Musical Stacks. Are you familiar with Toshio Iwai? He's the guy who made Electroplankton, but he's also been creating interactive/generative music things since the 80s and as far as I can tell he pioneered a lot of that stuff.

(And he also created this

featuring digital puppets controlled by voice actors with NES controllers. Not related to anything, but I love it)

Electroplankton is a huge inspiration for me, but I don't know anything about Toshi Iwai.

By the way, I got a hard-copy of The Nature of Code for Christmas and it is exactly what I need for a better technical understanding right now. I'm going to try to concentrate on my year's goal of creating character-driven romances, but I'm still excited to have this book to read at my job. It was a great recommendation for me.

I'm a butt who hasn't had time to go over you guys' stuff just yet but I'll dump in my list. It's all small stuff, none of it was worked on for that long cause I'm trying to accumulate experience, have fun and enjoy the general work more than making finished stuff.

My twine games first:

Perfection

The Agency

Sorry this has to be downloaded, itch.io treated the twine game weirdly and I never uploaded it to philome.la.

On an unrelated fun note, this was my first game sale ever, woop!

Chat with sassypantaloons

And then some of my other games:

Life

36229_t5nzwpex.jpg

Unfortunately due to a bug I never diagnosed, the web version of this doesn't adjust colour values and they all look the same shade. Unlike in the screenshot there. If anyone really wants I could send a standalone build cause those worked for me fine.

Don't Shoot

36483_tenb5sbp.jpg

Beat Me (Android app only)

WzTJ5N.png

and my last release, technically out on New Years Day,

Funeral

zjWoEX.png

If my game a week endeavour goes as planned, I'll have another... 47 games by the end of this year.

At least. This is gonna be a fun year.

Nice, I had a feeling you'd like it. Maybe you'll create a physics driven romance simulator about the love affairs of cellular automata and particle systems

I had a lot of fun playing around with this game and figuring out how to win. It was fun to go from being pretty much helpless to annihilating the ufos  as soon as they spawned. I had a problem where I  would permanently lose the ability to click, but I'm not sure if that was a bug on your end or on mine.

Cactus Farming Simulator was the most intriguing game for me, and I had some fun growing absurdly huge cacti. I love seeing insane fractal versions of realistic looking objects. My laptop started to chug really badly even with just one cactus on the screen, though, so I don't think I was able to get the most out of it.

This bug drove me absolutely f'ing insane. I tried to fix it post-jam and still have no idea what's causing it. I could draw the physics raycast to place towers and see it passing straight through a planet without returning a hit. Easily the most infuriating bug I dealt with last year; just thinking about it makes me mad :frusty:

Cactus Farmer is pretty brutal on your pc, so your experience is probably pretty typical. Once the cacti get big enough, the number of leaves starts growing exponentially and every leaf is growing during update ticks so it gets out of control pretty quick. I've been thinking about going back to it to keep fresh on UE4 and Maya; watching your cacti grow and seeing their shadows as the sun sets is serene and oddly satisfying, and I think I could do the growth system in a much more interesting way if I put the time in.

Anyway, really glad you enjoyed the games!

I'm going to post some of the playables that haven't been posted by the people who made them. If you made something and it pisses you off that I posted it, then send me a pm and I'll remove it.

I could have sworn there was a playable build of Tiny Tires by BigJKO, but I can't find it.

Also I still need to go through the playtest thread because I am still not seeing all the stuff I remember.

SpennyDubz those Barfcade games are the best. I don't think I had played the sausage one before but it is a treat.

Also thank you Clyde for posting all those games, and also for reminding me of that music thing I made, which then reminded me of the jam game I ended up using that stuff in but forgot to list in my post.

Careen (Cyberpunk Jam)

vbiCqj5.png

Turns out I've lost the original version of the audio reactive stuff I was working on, but Dragon Age hasn't been grabbing me so last night I salvaged some pieces from Careen and crammed them into High Moon (my Space Cowboy jam game) and this came out the other side:

I also put a lot of work into the website for Arcturus Proving Grounds, and a slightly playable easter egg: http://www.apggame.com/

Lower the main content by pulling the pink ribbon in the upper right hand corner, or press down. You can change the pictures by pressing left and right, but you can also type in "fun" or "ghost" to make fun ghosts appear.

Type in fun or ghost a few times (say, 3 or 4).

This resulted in a small library for getting the pixel position for fonts in a web browser and a pseudo-playable demo page: http://john-holland.github.io/lettergetter/
