Overwatch - That time Blizzard made a non-Diablocraft game.

I enjoy playing Mercy a lot. She's my favourite support. I think you need to focus on people being alive to feel good about what you're doing. That and watch the enemy team fall away.

But also crucially, if people aren't grouping up right for a support then just switch. No point being support for an unsupportive team.

I actually had an amazing Mercy game. We were on defence and I chilled with a Bastion, while the other members of the team would push, then retreat for healing. Worked out really well. I was also able to jump into the fray to heal, then use the Bastion as an anchor to fly to relative safety if it got too hot for me.

I also tried Lucio, but his healing feels...weak. It's AoE, but I didn't feel like I was keeping anyone alive. Other than that, yeah, if people aren't receptive to having a healing, I should just play another class.

D.Va and 76 are pretty good though. Still a bunch of heroes I've not tried yet, but it's always a little nerve wracking to try someone new.

If you look at the actual gross healing numbers, Lucio often beats Mercy by 20% or so, especially if you have multiple tanks or the opposing team is poor at concentrating fire. The ability to keep one tank alive through an absolute hail of gunfire or resurrect the entire team feel pretty cool though. I use Mercy because I have a tough time with Lucio's movement mechanics or really doing any damage with his attacks anyway.

Mercy was a great character for getting into the game originally, but nowadays I feel way more useful as Lucio. My mantra for Overwatch has become survivability. Playing Mercy, I just feel too vulnerable, too reliant on other heroes. Whereas with Lucio, I think his movement and alt fire blast wave allow me to survive for really long amounts of time, doing constant team healing. And he is a really good damage dealer when played right. I keep getting better at leading my shots, and doing side-to-side spreads with his shots frequently gets hits in, enough to deter opponents often.

On average, I heal less with Lucio than Mercy, but I contribute in kills, objective time, pushing objectives, and escorting people back into battle using speed boost.

Lucio, Soldier 76, Mei, and D.Va are my crew at the moment. All good survivors.

I love thinking that this is what was on the stereo when Reinhardt and Ana first hooked up.

I played some Lucio today before I went to work. I get him now, and while my healing numbers weren't the same as Mercy, I was able to keep everyone topped up and pulled off a really clutch alt that helped us cap a point.

The speed boost is sick though.

The pinatas in El Dorado are now breakable. I tried to break them when the game first came out and was rather disappointed that they were not an interactable object with any collision.

I'm reading conflicting accounts, but I specifically remember trying to break them with Pharah's rockets and it not working. The one that hangs under the bridge.

86 hours played: I just now found out that Torbjorn has an alternate fire by accidentally right-clicking.

That's okay! It's not good.

Uses more ammo for less consistent damage.

No worries, I just figured out the same thing about Roadhog...

The rockets? They're a staple for securing kills for me.

Yeah, I don't play him very much at all, so more than a few times I'll be dead and realise I didn't use them.

Soldier 76 is my jam.

On offence he can take out turrets or bastions before they know what hits them (that rocket helps) from afar. Also he can make widowmakers and other snipers panic and relocate when you land a rocket or a few headshots in succession.

On defence he can hold a position by himself thanks to the self heal and the rockets help burst down healers that others seem to ignore!

I'm trying to get to grips with Tracer. Half the matches I feel like I dominate, constantly killing with hit and run tactics. The other half I spend dead or hiding because I'm about to die. Can't seem to play consistently, and certain match ups really fuck her because she's so fragile. She also seems to depend heavily on the med packs lying around.

I flank all the time and make liberal use of her rewind.

I don't rush in to attack unless I have a rewind ready, and as soon as I lose at least 50 health I use it, and try to escape with the blinks I have saved too. Even if the enemy is alive I've already damaged and likely distracted them enough to disrupt what they'd otherwise be doing. All the better if I get multiple chasing me just to deal with one tracer.

It's especially good when Pharah is stuck in one place while using her ultimate.

I like them for killing Tracers and Genjis. Once I've got a few hits on them, I just need to aim at the ground and it'll finish them off  :eyebrow:

There should be a character in a wheelchair. They can't go up or down stairs and can only shoot if stationary or when being pushed by another character.

So the latest patch is now out on all platforms, bringing with it a new hero and quite a lot else besides. I haven't really had the chance to try Sombra yet - and I'm not entirely sure she's my cup of tea - but there's new game modes and a new reward structure which is actually quite exciting. There's a new Arcade section in the menu based around two totally new modes: 1v1, where players are randomly assigned the same hero and fight the best of six rounds in a brand new (very small) map set in the Arctic. And there's 3v3, which is almost the same except it's out of three rounds, and you can pick your hero, but it's on the same Arctic map.

I was convinced 1v1 was wild nonsense that surely wouldn't work in Overwatch, but...it kind of does? It's crazy. It strikes a weird balance between being incredibly silly but also unbelievably tense. With two Sombras, for example, part of the problem is just trying to find the other player when you're both trying to play cat and mouse with teleporters and invisibility. But with Dva, you don't have many options other than to wail on each other at short range - though even then there's potential for things to basically turn into Alien: Isolation, as I found out earlier tonight

There's other fun stuff in the Arcade too, like a random brawl playlist, which mixes things up with brawl rules from days gone by. There's weekly challenges whereby winning on a particular game mode gets you a loot box instantly, and getting three wins in any three Arcade modes gets you another loot box. Oh, and in Quick Play, you can't have more than one hero on the same team anymore. But! The old style Quick Play with no limits on duplicates has been moved into the Arcade section as a 6v6 game mode.

All nice stuff to keep players coming back week after week, I guess, though these things do feel like delightful little side-dishes compared to the main game.

I got this game on release day and was really into it for a month or so then really dropped off. I played i a little over the Olympic events and the Halloween one but not that much.

My two friends finally just got it, and the newest update and I am right back into it. The 6v6 random hero and 3v3 elimination game modes are fantastic, but getting a box every three wins is a great incentive to play too.

Hey thenexus! What are you playing on? I'm on PS4 and you should add me if you're playing on there. What do you make of Sombra? I haven't actually tried her out at all yet but I plan to tonight.

I'm having a lot of fun with Sombra. My main strategy is to drop a teleporter beacon in a safe spot, go invisible and run in behind the enemy team, hack a health pack, try to kill someone, then return to safety. Going anywhere unsafe without a beacon up inevitably results in my death. I still can't figure out the best way to use her ultimate; it counters Lucio, McCree and Pharah but only if you're in the right place at the right time.

I think her ultimate also counters Zenyatta's while his ult is active. I'm not completely sure that it does, but I think I've done it twice. I wouldn't think that was very useful, but I've seemingly negated Zenyatta's ult and it has been a massive boon to my team in both circumstances.
I'm reading that her ultimate does nothing to Zenyatta's, but like I said, I think I've done it twice. I'm not confident in my observational abilities though.
