Overwatch - That time Blizzard made a non-Diablocraft game.

Thoughts! Really enjoying my time with this.  Enjoy the mashup of characters being designed Lords Management-like while gameplay is more akin to tf2.  Enjoy it much more than say monday night combat or battleborn, which kept way more of the lane pushing crap.  Enjoy the variety of movement styles as well, whether I'm ninja flipping over the map, or just simply charging people halfway across maps into walls as a giant hammer man.

I think I'm really enjoying this too... After my first 3 games I was thinking 'is this it?' And had a pretty frustrating match as no one on my team was going toward the objective and just treated it like it was death match (although we were all level 2 then). Since then I've enjoyed it a lot more, feels really well balanced, I've tried a ton of characters all were fun to play with, and everyone felt dangerous... Except the mech girl, those guns are super weak.

What does it mean when your face icon is on fire? Your the best in the match? It happened to me a coupe times and it's given my performance anxiety.

I'm surprised the whole download was only like 2.5gb, and it feels like the beta has the contents of the full game. Is that just good coding?

Street fighter v had a bloody 7gb patch the other day when guile came out

Fire means you're on a streak.  D.VA(the mech girl), I've seen her completely clean up, her guns are really close range, seems to be about dashing in, unloading, getting out.  Then using dash -> ult to clear things up when it's ready.

Been playing this all day, I'm big into it as well. I'm coming into this game as a TF2-lifer, and it's scratching some of that itch: the objectives and team composition are modeled really closely on that, and also on Lords Management. The Lords Management bit I'm not as wild about. You don't shoot any creeps or do any "jungling" or what have you, but it is very inspired in the sense that there are already like 20 characters (I don't know if they plan to add more, I haven't really done any reading about this game) and each of them have 3 or 4 abilities.

Some of this was echoed on the 'cast this week, you see a big purple haze and you have to understand what that means instantly, or otherwise an invisible ninja lord will zip around and animate all over the place until you're dead. There's a lot to keep track of and it looks kind of inscrutable, just like a DOTA match or something. Been having a lot of fun though, it gets less and less inscrutable as I play.

I played with friends last night and solo tonight. All day I was thinking about how fun it was and couldn't wait to play when I got home, then I got home and played some solo games and felt a tad underwhelmed. You really need to have some sense of teamwork to feel like you're making progress, you can't really do little things on your own to help take objectives. Lots of times the fights end up happening away from capture points because one team or the other will chase someone across the map. Playing with buddies really alleviates that though, and you can even pull off some fun combos with just one person if you're on the same page. It's fun in a way I've not really had with a blizzard game recently though. I'll probably end up buying it on release.

Cooperation really does make it better. When my friends aren't online, I've been mostly playing support. That way I can just find a tank or attacking hero and hang with them for the most part. It's like teamwork without requiring any actual communication with other people.

Weird, on PC the download is 6+ GB.

Probably bigger textures. On the console, you don't have to have anything higher res than 1080p.

I kind of wish the game didn't have text chat. People being assholes in chat is pretty much the only bad experience I've had with this. If you're playing with friends you'll communicate with voice chat and when solo'ing on a random server the canned voice commands are enough to co-ordinate, so the text chat just feels like a place for angry people at this point.. Every once in a while people will say "good job!" but mostly it's just angry chat.

Yeah some random guy was talking in one of my games. I was like NOPE, couldn't find a why to silence him, had to go into settings and turn voice chat off.

Bit of a nasty surprise, haven't had anyone talk in a game since early days of destiny. Couldn't turn that shut off fast enough.

Update: It plays just fine with no slowdown on my crappy laptop, but with the graphics settings and resolution set to low the deluge of particle effects and crap can make the playfield a little hard to parse. Then again, I played very little so maybe you just get used to it. But as an avid TF2 player, I like my battlefields to have way less crap on them.

My above comment was my only bad chat experience. More often I've had positive experiences. One particular match it was just a love fest both within team and with the other team, was pretty cool.

There's a thread on NeoGaf that stats regarding Pornhub search terms and the Overwatch Open Beta.

Z4Pb.png

Tracer is the most searched for term that also contains the word "Overwatch" so it seems as though Blizzard's character designs did what they were intended as titillation.

I like voice chat in these types of games, esp when it results in more team play. If one person is being annoying you can just hit P I think and mute that player.

Enjoying all the neat interactions of abilities.

Was defending a point as Reinhardt, an enemy D.VA flew her robot in for self-destruct, was able to grab it and charge it out of the point, sacrificing myself for the team. All it needed was some sort of heroic, yet somber music to go along with it.

Genji's reflect is hilarious at the amount of things it works on and I love having weird air duels with Pharah as him.  On that note a Pharah had knocked me off a ledge, she thought I was falling to my doom, but I latched on to the wall and climbed up, then stabbed her in the back for the kill.

Someone else noted this, but default keyboard command is P and pulls up a menu to mute individual people, leave channel, or handle your group. Click the headphone icon and mutes all the jerks

The text is sort of silly, I had one person complain no one was on the print...but the advantage of a game like this is only 5sec to type in respawn, otherwise typing keeps you standing still and open to a snipe - so I think most people skip the typing to actively play

I didn't enjoy this at all for the first day of the beta, but I got kinda into yesterday and today. I like assessing the situation at the objective and then changing my hero to counter it. No one seems to play Symmetra which is strange to me since she seems to have a big influence on whether or not the match is won.

Has Blizzard announced any sort of long-term support plan?

They've committed to new free characters and maps at some point down the line. They also plan to have game mode like Tavern Brawl in Hearthstone that updates itself to have weird rules every week.
