Hatred: The Most Despicable Game of All Time?

Recommended Posts

True, but if they put it back up, it chills out the controversy now, and they can just ignore it for awhile and see if it goes away. Wouldn't be the first company to try something like that.

It's funny were claiming censorship when valve refused to sell Hatred. It's not censorship until the government blocks it.

People point out that Postal, Manhunt, etc, are on Steam, but keep in mind those games were vetted by ESRB and PEGI. Rockstar (very publicly) toned down Manhunt 2 for the European release because PEGI refused to rate it at all. For this game, the burden of regulation would be entirely on Valve.

PEGI != BBFC. PEGI gave the original game 18+, and as far as I know it has never refused to rate anything.

Who is claiming censorship here though? Because I think most all of us that have talked about the game here are pretty aware of the difference between Valve refusing to sell it and actual censorship (which I'm pretty sure no one here is advocating for).

Am I an outlier in that the things in Hatred don't really perturb me? Looking past the shock value all I see is an uninteresting shooting game. Postal already did all that stuff and that was shit too. But who knows, maybe it can be a cathartic experience for some douchey misanthropic teen...

That opening paragraph of this article pretty much nails it for me: "Hatred is the most controversial game of the moment, following in the footsteps of games like Night Trap, Postal, Super Columbine Massacre, Hooligans: Storm Over Gift 3, and many other much decried titles that nobody gave two shits about after release because they turned out to be completely irrelevant. For now though, it’s achieved the media firestorm it wants, sucking everyone from Valve to people who should know better into asking what it says and means for the gaming industry… which is of course precisely nothing, except that publicly accessible tools and distribution methods mean that arseholes can make games too. So, y’know, shock revelation there."

Great article. Funny stuff.

No, well you might be, but I'm right there with you. The paragraph you quoted sums up pretty much exactly how I feel.

It did look like you kill a tonne of women and minorities which is ugly.

But overall the game looks boring.

To riff off of Lu I know just the teen that'll be excited for this. But aside from 3dgy people I suspect it'll be this forgettable for many. Although I'm sure some people who aren't gamers will hear about this as their one piece of gaming news for the while and use it as a talking point about why games are bad. Which is sad.

Up until the murder porn I kept hoping the trailer would have some sort of overt nod that it was actually a send up of those themes but no.

It doesn't make me angry but it's dumb and gross and almost certainly presents an incredibly toxic worldview. It wouldn't upset me except that I know some people will gobble it up.

I don't even want to remember this, but didn't the original Postal game let you.... kill children? I'm not entirely sure, because I turn the game off the moment I thought it would happen and have kinda mentally blocked it.

I really don't even want to think of it, but what little I've seen of Hatred and what little I remember from Postal 1, makes me think Hatred is just Postal 1 HD, only grosser.

then I guess Jim Crawford is kind of a douchebag

which doesn't seem likely, so I'm willing to rule that out

I don't think it would be possible to do a better piss-take, if the developers were 100% serious then that's truly incredible.

I've seen Danny O'Dwyer and Jim Rossignol both say on twitter that the game just boring. So my prediction is it'll get really bad reviews but certain people will claim that it's the bias games press with their censorship agenda and buy it anyway, but confirmation bias will be enough for them to maintain that it's actually great the press sux.

I never understood gross for grossness' sake. This reminds me of kids at school who got a kick looking at pictures of mutilated bodies on the internet.

Yet in my incomprehension I wish this was censored.

At the very end, I genuinely expected the mushroom cloud to turn into a skull, because I had apparently forgotten it was serious. And they're pretty clearly serious because the whole game is, well, serious. There's no winking at the camera, no self-mockery, no indication whatsoever that they're in on how dumb it is.

I understand why people are saying it, but when you say "I wish this was censored", who exactly do you wish was doing the censoring? The Internet Police? Even if we accept that Hatred is so repugnant that it should be censored out of existence, by what mechanism do you propose we keep a thing off the internet?

The censoring mechanism is obviously murdering the developers before the game gets finished.

I don't have a serious answer to your question, but this sort of thing existing disgusts me on a level I'm not able to properly explain and the world would be a better place if it didn't exist.

The gamer part of me thinks the game looks stupid and boring.  The human part of me thinks its disgusting and tasteless.  The engineer in me keeps screaming "IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY".

Wait, there's not a secret login with a 3 digit password that makes a nuclear bomb go off in a highly populated city?

Not only is the password eight characters, it has to include a letter, a number and a symbol!
