Nobody expects the Dragon Age Inquisition

Recommended Posts

I'm playing as a mage on hard and I haven't noticed any elementally resistant enemies, though I've found a few that are vulnerable to electricity. It doesn't seem like it would be that problematic if you've specced into a couple of different trees and perhaps have a staff that does a third type of damage, anyway.

I'm on Nightmare and about 1/3 of enemies have an elemental resistance, with stronger enemies occasionally having 2 resistances. I've decided to spec deep into my specialisation tree, and one other tree, and I just choose the highest base damage staff without taking into account elements.

It can be irritating, but with 2 mages (my character is KE -spirit damage dorian is necromancy - again spirit damage which never has a resistance as far as I can tell) with different elemental specs one fire, one ice I can just focus fire on different things. The only irritating thing is when I can't be bothered to finish off one guy who has a resistance to my staff, I have to keep waiting for stuff to recharge and slowly take it down.

A tip for the warriors: pick up charging bull and use it yourself. It generates guard for each enemy you hit, so you can rack it up fast at the start of a fight. Also don't forget to set your mage to defend:warrior just to make sure they're throwing up barrier - preferably with the reduced cooldown (unless of course you want to do it yourself which is why I chose mage). LAter on there are enchants and items that let you generate guard on % chancer per hit. Those are fantastic for warriors.

The sad thing is, Knight Enchanter plays exactly how I wanted warrior to play. Lots of up-close damage, damage immunity, continual defence generation.

The new patch has completely broken the game for me - graphical glitches, stuttering and frame freezing so bad it's unplayable. Very irritating.

This may help with the graphical glitches, at least:

Hey Everyone,

We're working on getting a hot fix out for the PC graphics issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, here is a workaround you can try:

To start, make sure the quality setting you choose is equal to the setting set for Mesh Quality inside Options>Graphics

You will need to add a new command line parameter. To do this:

Through Origin: Right click on the Dragon Age Inquisition title Go to game properties Type the command line parameter in the Command Line Properties box. Through shortcut: Right Click Shortcut Go to Properties Under target go to the end of the field and type the command line parameter into the box Once there, add the following command line parameter: -ShaderSystem.ShaderQualityLevel <quality setting> In this instance, <quality setting> should be one of the following: Ultra High Medium Low An example of how to set your quality to high would be: -ShaderSystem.ShaderQualityLevel High

Please note that once the hot fix is out, you will need to go back in and remove this workaround from your command line.

It’s also important to note that pre-patch 2, all users on PC were being forced to use the Ultra shader quality. This means that those of you playing on lower settings will notice a decrease in quality, particularly players using low or medium settings. To achieve the same visuals as pre-patch, users on lower settings will need to change their settings to Ultra, which should likewise be used in conjunction with Ultra mesh quality. Mismatching the mesh and shader settings will result in other visual artifacts like overly shiny hair. Please be aware that changing settings to Ultra may impact performance on some machines.

Sorry about any frustration this may have caused.

For me the patch work fined, in fact it made performance much better, while I haven see exact how much fps did it improve, it did made some sensible difference. I just hope somewhere they add a free mouse look instead of pressing a button all time.

I totally only just noticed that when you look at the negative space of the cover, it's in a dragon shape.  :o

The patch fixed my most concerning issue: the main character voice-switch that happens under certain circumstances when talking to Varric at Skyhold. I was content with doing sidequests and holding off on that for a while, but had just gotten to the point where I wanted to continue the story.

I was just hit with that the last time I played. Lost like 45 minutes. That scene was another pointless break in my DA history. I'm still really disappointed with that stuff.

Playing is mostly a slog. There's a lot of content that only serves to distract but not entertain and I find it hard to figure out what's actually worth my time.

The "fix" hasn't worked for me :( It was working fine before the patch, just waiting for the hotfix now and hoping it works.

Oh, man, Cassandra

is totally obsessed with Varric's trashy romance novels.

It's so good.

How spider heavy is this game? Are the encounters predictable in the main story or random?

I'm a bit interested in the game, but the spiders are a nope for me. However, if I can predict where they are with a guide/walkthrough, I think I can handle all the stress.

The spiders are pretty predictable. Caverns etc. they're also rather cartoony so they might not trigger you as bad as some games. You're not really likely to see them wandering around in the open. Also there tend to be webs before you find any.

Griddlelol is correct, but there are rather a lot of optional areas where they can be found so you'd be skipping a lot. Plus there's one main story boss who is spider-like.

For example, If you do go for it, probably you'd want to skip any cave/tomb in the Hissing Wastes map (there is even a small region where they spawn out in the open on that map), which is kind of all there is to do on that map. Although I certainly know people who've beat the game without visiting that map at all, so I dunno.

edit: oops, actually you probably want to avoid, I just remembered that the whole story section in which that spider-like boss appears is riddled with spiders. I mean yes, it is entirely predictable, but also entirely unavoidable, so.

On reflection, I think you might be right about the boss but there are a whole mess of spider enemies in that area in general and as far as I'm aware, it's a mandatory mission.

I mean if da3 is anything like the first two, spiders are nearly a bigger issue for thedas than darkspawn or demons.

To be completely honest, there is that one spot in a cavern in Crestwood that completely caught me off guard and scared me good. It was a mix of where my camera was at the moment and game sounds transitioning into combat orchestra. *shudders*

In spite of my skepticism before release, it turned out I quite enjoyed BioWare's more 'Skyrim-lite' approach to world design. The regions have a more interesting style than in most Bethesda games (perhaps excluding Morrowind) and I found it pretty easy to get attached to the landscape AND the characters this time. I won't succumb to calling it genuinely 'alive' but there are flickers of greatness in pretty much every area. I felt like it was easier to connect with the lore-laden landscape in a way that was meaningful, yet difficult to descibe.

I am not sure, if I can convey how areas like the Hissing Wastes make me feel; it is a strange sort of serenity. It does feel like most areas have a rich history that goes beyond old castles. It feels like I am treading through the ruins of great dreams be it a dwarven Valley of the Kings, lands under constant assault by the blight, Emerald Graves (love that name) and trench warfare in the Exalted Plains, both with a history of colonialism and religious fanaticism. Strange châteaus echoing with stranger noises.

More like any other Bioware game, I feel like this one, too, takes place between the lines that we rarely outright see. Loved most of my time with it, even if there are some negative things to say. Maybe another time.

Finally got to playing this. First thing I did in skyhold was fall through the floor and find a weird rabbit sculpture wearing a top hat. That is one way to really cap off the events that get you there.

So I'm playing on the PC and was getting anywhere from 8-60fps. Disabling the Origin overlay fixed that and I managed to play a pretty good chunk of the game without too many problems. Started it up again today though and now the problems are back. At this point, I'm going to wait and just keep up with the patch notes in hopes that it'll be fixed.

I actually finished DA:O and DA2 pretty recently and I'm still meh about the combat. The one particular mage skill tree in DA2 that allowed me to throw around enemies is gone and that's unfortunate because the zaniness those spells made of the battlefield were entertaining.

The player-character also seems really dull. I feel like they tried to split the difference between DA2's limited player choice and DA:O's broadness and didn't quite get it right. The first game still has the best variety in player dialogue options, though I still enjoy trying to roleplay as a character with particular beliefs and opinions about the world.

Doling out inquisitor justice from the Skyhold throne seems really neat, though I've only done the first one and it didn't seem there was much consequence to it? Hoping to see more of it.

Not much else to say other than Vivienne is wonderful and deserves her own spin-off game where she maneuvers through Orlesian high-society.

Maybe I just haven't talked to her enough, but Vivienne would rate in the bottom half of characters in that game for me. I'm not sure why she doesn't click with me when so many others really seem to like her.

Nah, I'm there with you. Vivienne is fine but I have no particular love for her compared to, say, Iron Bull and Cassandra.

I bought this just now. It's 33% off on Origin at the moment if anyone was waiting for a sale? I dunno.

I beat Dragon Age 2 last night and for the duration of acts 1 and 2, I actually vastly preferred it to Dragon Age: Origins, as the characters and the plot were so much more interesting and/or better to me. The writing was vastly improved over the previous game. The interactions between all my buddies was great. I loved it. But then act 3 was, as I just put it in chat, like a slow fart until the end of the game. All this build up that just went in the most predictable direction possible, and it felt like there was way less cool shit happening with my buddies. A real shame, because even despite the obvious and egregious re-use of content, I still loved the first two thirds of the game quite a lot. But now that I've finished it...? Act 3 also felt like incredibly pandering with a lot of its sidequests like, hey, here's a bunch of characters from Origins/Awakening that you obviously loved, now talk to them for five minutes hurray okay bye. The gameplay is obviously way better in the first game,ut the characters were... I dunno. I dunno! Whatever. I still liked both games a lot and now I'm installing the third.

Did anyone ever stick with the multiplayer at all? I think some patches and more content have been released, was curious if it got any stronger since release.
