Batmazement: Knightly Man Bruce

Anyway, I just picked up the Arkham games via Amazon. I replayed the entirety of Asylum over the long weekend. That game is fantastic indeed, though I still prefer City. The visual fidelity on a PC was kind of staggering, really.

"The ears are too long and I miss the cape, but not too shabby. Not too shabby at all"

Amazing movie. I just listened to Paul Dini doing a podcast commentary for this with Kevin Smith (they also did 4 eps of TAS and Mask of The Phantasm), which was very interesting. Funnily enough, at one point he mentions the Arkham City bitch thing and how he tried to dissuade them from it.

I wish that I could listen to that podcast, but Kevin Smith annoys the crap out of me SO much.  I listened to the first few episodes of his batman cast and just wished every time that he didn't speak at all.

I recently cold-listened to his commentary of Batman Forever and it was pretty hilarious and insightful, but also scary since I've seen that movie so many times I didn't need to play it to know which scenes they were talking about...

Since he became a stoner and started doing 20 hours of podcast a week, Kevin Smith's podcast quality dropped quite a bit. I used to listen to all of it, but I rarely tune in now.

I've tried Smith's podcasts and found them grating.  To be fair, I downloaded like 2 of them randomly, found the opening 10 minutes of both to be not good, and never went back.

I tried listening to the smodcast when it started, but I gave up about 5 episodes in.  I was hoping for more "An Evening with Kevin Smith" and less "listen to Kevin Smith make an idiot out of himself".

This was never a new development.

He was anti-pot for most of his movie making career actually, as well as the first 50 or so smodcasts.

Was he actually anti-pot or did he just say that because that's what he was "supposed" to do? The same thing happened with another podcast I listen to and he eventually just came out and said it was because he didn't want to get in trouble. (A thing he no longer cares about, apparently. Although living in California helps.)

For real? I thought Smith was always a vocal proponent of smoking weed. Clerks was drenched in it. What a weird thing.

Wikipedia says:

Smith only began smoking marijuana at age 38 after working with Seth Rogen on Zack and Miri Make a Porno,

and the footnote links to an interview with Jay Leno so it seems legit.

Yep, it's true, he only got into it in the last few years. It's only really his Jay and Silent Bob characters that interact with drugs and even they barely ever get high on-screen. In fact, the only times I can think of are a dream sequence and a meta movie set sequence.

Anyway, I can totally understand people finding Smith irritating. I do find him funny and charmingly enthusiastic, but he says a LOT of dumb shit and works best next to someone smarter to call him out on stuff (not bigotry, just anthropomorphising animals and not knowing politics, geography, maths etc).

I remember a couple stories from the various Evening with Kevin Smith films involving pot, one in particular involving Ben Affleck's former house that he bought, his wife, and getting groceries delivered to him.  I think that may have been the start of him actually getting into it.  I don't remember which particular Evening it was from though.

Also there's this from 2001

Oh yeah, and they were in the Cos I Got High music video, and the superheroes based on them within the films are a load of pot puns. But that's mostly extraneous, there isn't much "these characters are high!" humour in his stuff.

In actual Batman news that probably surprises no one, gaming outlets are reporting that Arkham Knight has been delayed to 2015.  Reasons given include the good old standard "we want to make the best game we can".

I feel for developers who are pressured to set a date way before they could possibly make a reasonable schedule and plan to hit a date.

That's only good news to me. I actually believe Rocksteady can do something proper with that extra time.

I just finished Arkham City on PC, what a fantastic game. It's been nice to replay these games.

I guess I'll move on to Origins, which I have yet to actually play. Some people I know claim it's the best of the three.

I would join them. It's functionally pretty much the same game as City, but it toned down the stuff that skeezed me out about that game, so it was like playing City without all the cognitive dissonance. Good times.

Same here, went in expecting a sub-par experience, got a lot of fun out of it, they really got the flow of getting new gadgets and it making sense story-wise right. SHOCK GLOVES. And the investigations are fun too.

So Origins looks fantastic, but it certainly isn't as polished in its presentation as City or Asylum. DX11 effects are amazing, however. It's also a sight better optimized than City was.

I think it was Alex Navarro on the Giant Bomb stream that made a comment about Scarecrow being the first character design in the Arkham series he actually liked.  I agree with him.  I haven't been into any of the character designs so far but Scarecrow looks genuinely... scary.
