Idle Thumbs 145: Rich Uncle, Cool Uncle

Recommended Posts

Nick wrote about exactly this earlier in the thread, if I remember correctly!

Yeah...

"...I like to argue for the sake of it, which probably isn't a good thing on a topic that people are fired up about."

No kidding, apparently.  :P

I think this is the first time "Snow" wasn't taken.

Oh, Doppelganger. There's an idea for an avatar.

I'm pretty sure he blanketed all popular smartphone games as non-games. I don't someone is serious when they laugh after every statement they make unlike VInny and Brad that acted like fucking armchair psychologists.

And you still listen to the Bombcast why?  Kinda weird if you listen to something you apparently don't like the personalities on!

I'm finding myself feeling the way Chris seems to think about Threes!, about the Titanfall Beta . When I play it I'm having fun and the expiration-date encourages me to play it more, but after a few matches I'm like "I'd rather have washed dishes or played Papers Please." I think I have fully integrated the game-hipster mentality.

I think this is the first time that a game being super fun isn't enough for me to want to play it. I don't know what Titanfall is missing, but the game isn't lacking in fun.

Edited for an additional metaphor:

This feels similar to realizing that a beat and a melody is not enough to make a song that I will add to a playlist.

Edited again for more precise simile:

This feels like realizing that just because I enjoy dancing to it, I don't want to put it on my digital audio player of choice.

Fun is under-rated. I'm playing oodles of Smite at the moment. I'm a big fan of Lomas for a last few years, but the commitment to get the best out of them is often overbearing for me. Smite seems to have a much lower skill cap, so I can run around fighting people and have a good time with not much investment beyond getting used to the controls. It's fun.

Threes! isn't fun. Threes! is awesome.

There's a game called Fives on Android that's similar to Threes.  It's fairly blatant clone but until the official Android port is done (which is supposedly in the works), it's the closest I've found.

Is it cleverly named after the number of people who worked on the game, or did they not also feel the need to copy that?  B)

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in all of the Flappy Bird kerfuffle is the, possibly huge, negative economic implications for Nguyen. Everyone is looking at that $50k/day number from a western point of view, but Nguyen's situation is probably one we can't properly understand. For Nguyen's entire life Vietnam has been in this weird transitional phase economically: going from a communist system, to a market system, with the end goal of moving back toward a socialist system. The average annual wage for Vietnam is just over $2000. If the ad revenue numbers are right then this 29 year old guy who was raised as a socialist may become one of the wealthiest capitalists in the country. (Side note: The Vietnamese Dong converts to USD at a rate of 0.000047 so if the $50k number stays constant for more than a few months Mr. Nguyen will need to do his bookkeeping in exponential notation. ) Not to mention, the government of Vietnam's attitude towards economics isn't what you'd call laissez-faire, there are probably government officials coming to this dude's house. It might just be to congratulate him, but it's probably kind of intense.

Vietnam's Vice Minister of Finance: Nguyen* Cong Nghiep
looking "kind of intense".

*More than 1/3 of Vietnamese people are named Nguyen, so they're probably not related.
