It's the end of the year, a time of reflection, both of oneself and of the society they live in everyday. In this case, we're talking about those who play games. Very often, we tend to look back at their personal Game of the Year; other times, they focus on the worst games they played during the year. However, I've noticed a constant lack of people talking about those games played by almost no-one but them. They may be hidden gems, they may be mediocre games forgotten about within the week of release. They may be that one game you say to yourself, "Was I the only one who played this?"

This year, I wanted to contribute to the community by creating a list of games that were overlooked, rarely played by people outside of a few others, or just flat out forgotten about. The reason I'm creating this forum thread is simple: I want to help in the preservation of games as much as I can. Hopefully, this will become a place to come back to for reference's sake.  However, I only have two games I can think of:

  • Lost Planet 3 (Wasn't this announced 4 years ago?)
  • The Swapper (a.k.a. That One Puzzle-Platformer That Isn't Gunpoint Patrick "Sports" Klepeck Likes)

I've racked my brain for hours thinking of other games fitting this classification, but, ironically enough, I can't remember many. This is where you come in: all I need is for you to post about that one game you remember but not many people remember came out this year. It can be a console exclusive; a small indie game on PC; a Flash game; whatever. So long as you can put the month and year it came out (and a few personal words you have to share about the game), I'm OK with it. An exact date would be preferable, but a month and year will do.

When you do list the game, please place the name and date in bold for easier searching.  Also, try to write your personal reasons as to why you think the game was (or could have been) forgotten.  Your initial entry should look like this:

Lost Planet 3 (August 27, 2013): The game had a stealth release: almost no-one knew it came out due to a lack of advertising and public awareness.  I liked it for [this reason] and [that reason] and [Congrats Nick].

As stated above, all I need is for everyone to post at least one game you think will be forgotten by the end of the year otherwise. In your post, state the date of its release (month and year will do fine) and a simple reason for why you think the game was forgotten.  Place the name and release date in bold.

That's it. Thanks again for taking the time to read this post. I hope to hear from all of you soon.

Oddly enough, I feel like this fits the bill:

Gears of War: Judgment (March 19, 2013): While people knew about its release and it had the slightest amount of fanfare thereafter, Jugment mostly got attention because the Gears community had to decide whether or not to transition from the pretty damn good Gears 3 multiplayer to what turned out to be a fairly mediocre Judgment multiplayer. That, along with the fact that the story was an origins-type thing, means that I can't imagine anyone gives this game much thought. That said, I loved the game mostly because I'm deep into the Gears fiction from the books and this one dug into that previously side-story material. In a year of exemplary story/plot shooters (Bioshock Infinite, Metro Last Light) and mediocre competitive shooters (Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts), Judgment was well rounded with great graphics, an origin story that didn't seem totally meaningless (hello Batman Arkham Origins), and solid Gears gunplay. I'm a little disappointed that it didn't get any GOTY attention, because pound for pound it beats the crap out of something like COD: Ghosts.

Can't agree with you about The Swapper - didn't we have 4 threads about that game here? :)

I would add Incredipede.

Dragon's Crown (August 6, 2013) - There was the moral panic surrounding Dragon's Crown's use of boobs but I don't know how much talk there was of how it actually played. I really liked it once I became numb to the cheesecake (ironically, I never became numb to the cheesecake* you make in the cooking mini-game).

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (February 19, 2013) - It hacked, slashed and butt rocked its way into my heart.

*ok, you don't actually make cheesecake in the cooking mini-game per se, but goodam that food porn is out of control!

Speaking of Platinum games, Anarchy Reigns also came out this year and was absolutely a ton of fun online. A weird over-the-shoulder brawler in the spirit of something like Mad World or God Hand, but with a deeper combo system and an emphasis on multiplayer taking place in huge Power Stone-esque arenas.

Didn't stick with it for terribly long, but i definitely appreciate the month or so i got out of it. Can't imagine it's the type of game that retained a community for long, but maybe it has. (Aside from online play, there wasn't much. A junky solo mode and some reasonably competent bots.)

Also, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance hacked, slashed and butt rocked its way into my heart.

I've been a pretty big MG fan most of my life but I never played MGR. I'm listening to its buttrock-tastic soundtrack right now and it means that I will likely buy the game when it hits PC in the next week or so.

Someone actually liked Lost Planet 3?

I played all of LP3 and the only distinction it has, is that it is a not-terrible game by Spark.

That said, I would compare the style and pacing to an Assassin's Creed game and those things are huge.

I think Skulls of the Shogun got hugely overlooked, maybe since the hype really died down after the game got announced so long ago, which was kinda disappointing because i had nobody to play online with. I think that game did a lot of things right just with its mechanics though, just a skirmish is pretty fun to play against a friend as long as they know as much as you about the game.

also it seemed like not many people loved Injustice as much as me, even though I was ready to not like it. I thought the single player was lame but the way it plays is great fun even for people who don't play fighting games a lot, although i do. as though it's the skulls of the shogun of fighting games, in fact. also it's full of so many features that a lot of fighting games just seem to omit, like street fighter 4 doesn't even have that much content and it expects you to extrapolate all of your experiences from multiplayer

Skulls of the Shogun seemed like a victim of really being dicked around by its publisher, Microsoft in this case, with added demands of the product causing delay upon delay. When it finally came out, all the excitement people had for it had mostly evaporated.

Microsoft's been particularly horrible to indies in the last few years, it's quite a hard swing from how they were earlier on in the generation.

Ikachan got a 3DS rerelease back in January and I don't remember anyone saying a single thing about it. I didn't even know it was there until I was browsing the eshop a few weeks ago.

It's a tough thing for me to see, since I enjoyed the game, it's hard for me to know or say how forgotten they are, but Lone Survivor's Director's Cut went by as unnoticed as the original, the thread here is pretty much dead. :|
