Wow. Wow.. Wow! I think you mean one of the best Mario games, I think. Yeah..

Nope, definitely objectively one of the worst. I challenge anyone to name a Mario platformer that is worse than this game that also isn't a "New Super Mario Bros" game.

Are you trying not to be taken seriously on purpose?

Anyway, I don't understand how anyone could dislike Yoshi's Island. It's one of the most stylish, and most inventive (especially for its time) platformers. I'm reminded of the episode of Idle Thumbs where Zack Johnson voiced his distaste for the game, and I was hoping he'd get into why... but then he didn't.

(this was also the episode where folks pooped on Majoras Mask without a given reason, it was a frustrating episode)

Super Mario Bros. 2 on the Famicom aka Super Mario Lost Levels (not the Doki Doki do over). They break basic rules that the original wrote.

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Land

Super Mario Land 2

All objectively worse, but since Yoshi's Island is super great, these four are still great.

All this silliness aside I just don't understand how someone could dislike that game.. How?!

I'm not saying it is a bad game, I just think it is at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to Mario games. Here are some of my reasons for not liking it as much as the Mario games that preceded it:

  1. I much prefer the aesthetic of all of the other Mario games to Yoshi's Island. It is nice and colorful but the screen just feels so busy that it takes me a few extra split seconds to spot an enemy sometimes. I have died a good number of times because it takes me that little bit of extra time to recognize what is coming at me.
  2. Baby Mario sucks. It grates on my nerves every time I get hit and I get to hear him crying and floating off. And there is nothing worse than getting hit in a spot where it is impossible for me to get over to him before those bastards come and carry him off.
  3. The vehicle sections are not enjoyable. Some of them just don't control right and even when they do, I feel like these segments are kind of lame and I can't wait to just get back to controlling regular Yoshi.
  4. I don't like the egg throwing mechanic. It would have been nice if you didn't have to wait for the target to pan to the position you want. When there is a bunch of shit going on, it is frustrating to have to dance around and avoid shit until the target ends up where you want it.
  5. The platforming just isn't as satisfying to me as it is with all of the other Mario games. Coming off of Super Mario World, the levels just don't feel as fun to me.

I actually do like this game in general, I just like the other Mario games better. I would actually be curious to hear what other people did like about this game because I was under the impression that a lot of other people also took issue with how it played.

You can lock the target in a position so you don't have to dodge stuff nearly as much.

I had actually never heard a single person disliked this game until Zack Johnson mentioned it on the podcast and now you! I'll form some thoughts on it later and let you know why I really like it.

The vehicle sections are pretty bad. I always forget about those when I'm recalling the game.

I also don't like yoshis island, but haven't played since rented at release. A long lingering of distaste, should try it again to reinvigorate that feeling

Have only just caught up with this thread again. Everything Zeus has said about his daughter's experiences and progression in the Mario games sounds wonderful. I also don't particularly like Yoshi's Island. I've never enjoyed the flutter jump and the whole game feels like a cute escort mission. And I dislike escort missions.

Looks nice though. I have a feeling if I played the recent 3DS sequel I would find it extremely similar and most of the internet would crack out the pitchforks and unite to fight #Yoshigate. Except here, where the forums are apparently crawling with heretical YoshiMcSaurus non-lovers.

Yeah, I don't know what they did to the jumping in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island but  I hated it; it was like being underwater. The aesthetic was nice and I did not object to the escort element but the core mechanics just seemed to be broken.

Super Mario Land on the Gameboy is Godlike and comes in my top three of the 2-D Mario games. Top 5 overall.

I played a lot of this with my daughter over the weekend and just hit world 6. World 5 definitely stood out as the most interesting to me so far. It was all snowy and cloudlike and had several levels that I thought were much more unique than anything I had seen in the previous areas. It is definitely a solid platformer and I am having a fair amount of fun with it but even so, there is a constant feeling of frustration just under the surface with some of the stuff I mentioned above.

At this point, the two things that are continuing to bother me the most are the egg throwing/collecting mechanic and having to get baby Mario back whenever I get hit. With the eggs, it has just become such a tedious chore to have to constantly go find an egg block or a bunch of enemies to swallow to get the eggs I need. Combine that with the egg aiming mechanic and it makes for a lot of needlessly annoying sections in the game. I cringe every time I come across a piranha plant that shoots the fuzzy spike things because they take 3 eggs to kill and I almost always miss with a couple of them, even when I try to lock the crosshair where I want it. If I could just have infinite eggs it would make some parts of this game so much more enjoyable.

And as far as baby Mario goes, seriously, fuck that. That is just the worst way to handle health in a platformer like this. In these later levels, I have ended up in so many situations where I get hit at a bad time and I just can't get to him and have to watch that stupid timer slowly go down. And with the baby crying sound, this might qualify as the most annoying mechanic I have ever encountered in a game.

I'm sort of impressed that you're bothered by collecting eggs. It's such a quick and easy thing to do, and while it's been a while since I've played it, I don't know if I ever felt like it was a hurdle I had to work to jump over. Do you just want to rush through the game as fast as possible, or something? I felt that way while playing NSMBU until I got used to the fact that I'd forgotten: Mario games are just super fucking slow compared to most modern indie platformers. Horrifically slow, until you get used to it. Bleh. Mario sucks. Old hat. Burn it all.

I'm on your side now.

I'd say for me it just feels like unnecessary tedium that sometimes kills my momentum. There have been a good number of occasions now where I get to a spot that requires eggs to get through and I have to do some backtracking to get back to where there are some enemies or an egg block to replenish my supply. I don't think there is anything about the egg collecting mechanic that adds to the experience and in every case I have come across, I would have preferred to just know that I can count on having what I need.

That's fair enough. I can't really hold it against you except that you're dead wrong and I only hate you forever! Forever's not that long.

Don't do it, the only good Yoshi's Island is the first, the rest are third party crap.

Also Yoshi's Story is bad even though that's supposed to be the direct first party sequel. It's not even near the same besides throwing eggs.

There's no way Yoshi's Island is objectively bad. I don't even get it, the game is like Mario World on steroids and lots of great ideas and controls. Plus it's beautiful. I think most people have a special place for Yoshi's Island in their kidneys.

Although thinking about it, besides the cutsy art style, I don't think Yoshi's Island is for kids. Seems like a lot of levels are too hard for younger less experienced players, even if you aren't looking to 100%. I guess the good thing about Yoshi's Story is it's great for kids because you can eat 30 fruits ASAP and ignore almost 90% of the game and beat it in less than an hour. What bad design.

I bought a second PS3 controller for my daughter last week and we started playing LittleBigPlanet over the weekend. She's been having a blast and thanks to all the time we've spent playing Mario, she's been able to pick it up fairly easily. What's nice about this game is even when the levels get more difficult and she dies a lot, there are ample opportunities for her to respawn and since it is same screen co-op, I can easily show her how to do something by doing it first with my character. Add in the level creator and all the community levels you can play and I have found it to be a pretty great co-op game that a young child can pick up pretty easily.

I introduced my 3yo son to MineCraft!! The down-ward spiral to addiction begins now.

Actually, it was really fun. First he just sat in my lap and watched as I built a little house on my iPad and put chickens all over the place. He was really interested in a pig, so I opened up a hole and trapped it inside our house. Then I realised Pocket Edition has local multiplayer over wi-fi, so I gave him the iPad. Obviously he can't really figure out the interface, but he learned how to not look up into the sky all the time, at least. Then I downloaded MC:PE to my iPhone, and logged onto the iPad's game and it was a lot of fun! I could actually see him build these little walls of stone in his immediate area (because he hadn't figured out how to walk around) and could walk up to him and he went "There's Daddy!"

It was adorable and I can't wait to do this more with him some day until he decides Daddy's not as cool to play with as all of his cool friends and now he wants a dedicated server to play with his friends and "How do I make it so *you* can't log on to our server, Dad?", OH NO!

My 2- and 4-year old daughters love the crap out of Pole Riders. I'm not super happy about the jumping on each other's heads part but the bizareness and weird physics are endlessly entertaining to both them and me.

That is awesome! I played Minecraft on PC a bit with my daughter when she was 3-4 and she loved watching it, but wasn't really capable of playing herself. She's turning 6 in a couple weeks though and has had quite a bit more exposure to various games so I should jump back on that.

And hopefully your son always thinks you are the coolest. But cherish these moments regardless.
