Idle Thumbs 130: Fundamentally dangerous to the notion of culture

Recommended Posts

I couldn't help but laugh at myself during the discussion of Candy Box 2.  There is of course a wiki already (although it's fairly bare bones right now), but what really got me laughing was the idea of looking into the javascript for the game.  I've actually done this, not for the reasons mentioned in the cast but to figure out why it wasn't running on my computer at work (turns out our anti-virus identifies it as malware).  The fact that things I had already looked at and done before the cast was even recorded were joked about was hilarious to me.

Also when Jake made a joke about how he wanted to see Chris' Mickey Mouse fanfiction, I really thought he was going to say he wanted to see Chris' Fifty Shades of Grey Mickey Mouse fanfic.

It seemed like a safe bet that in 2013 people would know goatse was nsfw.

On the other hand, I haven't seen an actual link to goatse in nearly a decade so my instincts are pretty blunt. I very nearly followed that link because, hey, elegant and finely-crafted link.

The logo of the local ISP Westnet has even stopped being funny.

the funny thing about bringing up the nine inch nails broken video as an underground, guerilla sort of thing was that was actually a corporate marketing move in and of itself... MTV had problems with the 'down in it' video, being investigated as being too close to a snuff film, and was very antsy about playing NIN videos after... so they made the broken movie as torture porn to create alternative rock cred about being "too hot for the man to handle" and so when the hype built up and the closer video by mark romanek came out a couple years later and it was crazy and creepy, it got heavy rotation on MTV and made NIN like rock superstars after that

Goatse will always live on as a platonic form, with the specter haunting various unfortunate logos and advertisements.

Basically you're saying that the only place goatse exists is inside our own minds, projected onto unassuming objects.

How did I never realize this before?! It even has a ring!

I remember hearing about the nyan cat creator or property holder getting after the Scribblenauts guys for putting it in their game. The goatse people should just do the same thing with goatse derivative design. Then they'd make enough money with that to put the original site up!

I'm too lazy to get a proper screenshot, but I think the sound baffling in the Idle Thumbs office as visible during various streams has been described as a goatse before.

Nobody has really noticed the mod made for recent streams.

You mentioned it on the 24 hour cast you and Chris were on recently.

Yes! I forgot.

Well, that's understandable at least. Still quite unfortunate. That scene alone significantly narrows down who I can show the doc to with a straight face, as most of my nerd friends are either from Japan or have ties to Japan somehow and tend to get pretty angry about media misrepresentation of their country (especially "look at this weird Japanese thing" sort of articles).

A little late to the conversation at this point, but I'm pretty sure SNSD has a fairly large Japanese following as well--at least large enough that they record a lot of their songs in Japanese.  I'm definitely no expert in telling the difference between Korean and Japanese, but it did sound like that version was in Japanese.  I could 100% be wrong though.

I'm glad Chris talked about the Smash Documentary.  I feel like an idiot though because I emailed that request for them to watch it intending for Chris to not read it on air.  Oh well, I guess I'm glad it lead to discussion.  I did feel that the later episodes lacked the same story telling that the earlier episodes achieved.  Once the episodes started focusing on Mango they lost a lot of their direction and turned out to be a lot more of just interviews about Smash with no real connection.  Overall I thought it was really good though.  I thought Wife's segments were great--he made the entire documentary much more entertaining to watch.

I speak decent Japanese, and my partner is a native speaker. That song was in Korean, there's no question.

I'm aware of how popular the group is internationally, and I know there's a version of that song that's in Japanese. If anything, though, the fact that a Japanese version exists and they STILL used the Korean version makes me face palm harder.

Still a great doc. I wouldn't give a shit about any of this if it weren't a great doc.
