XCOM: Enemy Unknown Expansion pack will be available in North America on Nov12, internationally on Nov 15 for Windows PC, Xbox 360, PS3

Handled in the same way as a Civ expansions pack. It'll add loads more content to the original game so you can replay the game afresh with new features.... SWEET

It'll be a stand alone game not DLC on consoles... not so sweet.

40 bucks for console, 30 bucks for PC.

Giantbomb has a 20 min podcast with senior designer Ananda Gupta

That's the designer of Twilight Struggle! I'm seeing a bunch of dismissive comments about this on Neogaf, but dismissing something that Gupta is designed is a fool's errand in my opinion. I am not so psyched about leaving the final mission in place, but all the changes I'm reading about are very exciting!

Sounds awesome. All X-COM needs is more stuff in it: more maps, enemies, and gears. Sounds like that's exactly what the expansion will provide. Day 1 for sure.

I hope the campaign is extended/longer as I managed to get through the game relatively fast and I didn't really have a chance to try out the robot team mate thing for example. I fear I might end up missing out on a some cool stuff if i have to much to choose from

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe there is a 2nd wave option that makes the campaign longer.

from the sounds of it this one might actually be a strategy game

http://www.shacknews.com/article/80790/xcom-enemy-within-encourages-less-conservative-play

the new currency named "meld" is designed to make you take more risks in combat.

Meld canisters are hidden throughout each map, and a countdown timer begins when the mission starts. If you don't find it in time, it explodes, forcing the player to choose between approaching cautiously and potentially losing the meld, or pushing hard and increasing chances of finding it.

might fix the original problem with the game - no strategy at all in the main gameplay portions

Even in bomb defuse missions which had the same thing sort of?

those were designed to be easier though, but it looks like it'll have that basic idea

basically anything to add even 1 or 2 decisions per hour will be better than "take 2 steps. overwatch. repeat for 20 hours"

the thing is it doesn't look like this meld thing is even required. guess it's just about how well they balance it

Hm, I never played like that. I guess I would say that XCOM is exploitable, but I wouldn't say that it lacks strategy as a result.

Hmm, I might have to finally get the PC version of XCOM for this. I don't relish the idea of playing the expansion on my 360.

Especially since it sounds like the expansion will make the game a bit more mod friendly, the PC version is definitely the way to go I think.Hopefully there will be another Steam sale between now and when the expansion comes out so you can grab that game for cheap.

the game clearly presents an objective that the player is supposed to achieve

from a strategy game discussion standpoint, this creates an optimization problem

i agree that most players might not try to solve it, but the actual game (the objective the designers want the player to accomplish) involves almost nothing beyond mindless repetition
