I Had A Random Thought...

Recommended Posts

I don't get it.

Apart from Pterodactyl being spelled wrong I'm not sure what the problem is.

I missed it twice in the first image before I saw it:

"They a saw a brown..."

Wow, I didn't even notice the misspelling. Maybe I need to read some teaching aids!

Sorry, I thought the two glaring errors were obvious.

And I wish her name was Perodactyl but every other mention in the book spells it correctly. What's really frustrating is that my daughter was reading the book to me and got stuck in both of those spots because the sentence didn't make sense and she didn't understand why the character's name had changed.

This kind of stuff really pisses me off. When a book is only 12 pages and is using very simple language designed to help children learn to read, there is absolutely no excuse for this kind of thing.

I just assumed the narrator was Mario...

Seriously though, I was SCRUTINIZING these pics to figure out what was wrong :P

Honestly, I've never been great at catching stuff like this. I wonder why?

Out of curiosity, how were you guys taught to read? I'm fairly certain I never did the hard core phonics thing, just sight word learning. I rarely if never find myself sounding out a word in my head or even following a sentence linearly.

I guess it was just easier for me to notice since my daughter was reading it out loud and pointing at each word as she was reading.

I've logged a bunch of hours doing copy editing, so can read with a critical eye looking for basic mistakes like that, and I will still miss shit on a regular basis.  The human brain is fabulous at filtering out things like that.

I don't really remember exactly how I was taught to read.  Whatever would have been the standard in the 80s I suppose.

There are plenty of things that show our brain sort of smooths over misspellings and wrong words and extra articles and too many uses of the word "and" in a sentence to just inject what is actually meant straight into our thoughts without pesky interpretation. I would guess the most straightforward reason is a combination of the fact that you and I know how to read, plus we've spent years and years on the internet subliminally parsing writing from people who are bad at writing to have it make some kind of sense (see this post for examples).

I never did a hooked on phonics thing. Lots of being read to and attention from my parents.

Just heard this quote from quality human being Lindsay Graham who is apparently about to announce his presidential candidacy.

If I'm president of the United States and you're thinking about joining al Qaeda or ISIL ... I'm not going to call the judge, I'm going to call a drone and we will kill you.

Great.

Maybe there's some truth in the cheesy "tree of libery" quote, if the ideals of a civilised society have just become platitudes in some people's mouths.

Since there will inevitably be lots of porn on the Oculus Rift after it releases, I wonder if anyone will do the whole "flightstick hand tracking" thing but with your junk instead of a flightstick. And if somebody does manage to make that work, I hope they go the extra mile and allow you to customize your junk. Maybe one day I want to experience having a 13" dong. Maybe the next day I want to see what it would be like to have a fully animated squirrel where my junk should be.

I just really hope they fix the nausea issues before this stuff becomes a (virtual) reality.

One of the first things I remember seeing for the Oculus Rift was a demo where somebody attached a Tenga sleeve to a Novint Falcon so that you could fuck a poorly-rigged Hatsune Miku.

Valve's VR api was released recently so you don't even have to wait for the actual device to come out to experience this new wave of immersive pornography.

Didn't think this would be so easy to find.

And that's what I get for looking up tenga sleeve.

Is there a mashup song that contains '(I've Had) The Time of My Life' transitioning into '99 Luftballons' or have I just dreamt that? It goes from the chorus of 'Time of My Life' straight into the (synth?) bass riff from "99".

I have the biggest mouth ulcer i have had in years.

Mouth ulcers suuuuck. I used to get them regularly a couple of years ago.

Thankfully now I only get them, and small ones at that, after I accidently bite the inside of my mouth.

I used to get them all the time as a kid. Probably because I didn't sleep enough. Now I only get them when I'm seriously stressed, and yeah, they fucking suck. I used to salt them, but I think just leaving them to heal themselves is the best thing to do, along with loads of sleep.

I used to get them all the time, but i've only gotten small ones more rarely in the last few years. This one is a doozy though:/ Luckily it isn't as painful as the once i get sometimes \o/

Oh haha, I thought a mouth ulcer was a hole where water could leak out on to your cheek.

I've had one of those before. Ouch.

I usually splash a little orange juice on mine when I get them. It burns for a few seconds but then goes pretty numb, so at least it doesn't bother me all day. I too used to have them a lot when I was younger, and it contributed for me not liking certain foods (tomatoes being the biggest oddity.) I also had monthly sinus infections. Both went away when I had my appendix out, and then shortly afterwards transferred out of public school which reduced my stress level a lot. I assume the latter is what had the real effect, but sometimes I wonder about the former.
