Pepyri Posted October 31, 2012 Well, since my old account(quaunaut) still can't post, I guess I have a new account now. Woot. SO HEY THIS THING CAME OUT TODAY. Natural Selection 2. What is it? It's an asymmetrical multiplayer FPS/RTS hybrid where the most important quality is teamwork. It's made by 8 guys, and it took them 6 years. Sequel to a Half-Life 1 mod, that never quite could get that whole "release on time" thing to work out. It's only $25 and you should really try it.
Vegas Posted October 31, 2012 Man so much of my middle school gaming career was playing this and other half-life 2 mods like the specialists and numerous others. I love NS2. I've been playing the beta build. I highly recommend it. It's a multiplayer experience literally unlike anything else aside the first game. Truly terrifying for humans a lot of the time, great power fantasy on the alien side as well. This game is a lot more well balanced than the mod as well. AAAA+++++++ would play again
TychoCelchuuu Posted October 31, 2012 Natural Selection was not a Half-Life 2 mod, Vegas! Nor was The Specialists. NS2 is awesome. I love it I love it I love it. All of you need to buy it.
Vegas Posted October 31, 2012 Oops I meant half-life 1. No I'm not going to go back and edit it.
Sno Posted October 31, 2012 http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-ex-natural-selection-ii/17-6744/ A pretty wild development story behind this game.
TychoCelchuuu Posted October 31, 2012 And I've been following it for all ten years! Actually more - I was following the mod before it released. So all in all I've been with Natural Selection for more than a decade and I've loved every second of it. I don't really know how the Steam sales chart works but I know that Natural Selection has been #1 for a while even during the Halloween sale. That makes me so happy! People are buying the game! YAY
Forbin Posted November 1, 2012 Natural Selection was a hell of a mod. I'm glad to see these guys have finally shipped.

YAY Stop lying Tycho, you were like 13 when NS 3.0 came out. Kids weren't playing NS1! That's a fact. *was 14 when NS 1.04 was out*
Vegas Posted November 2, 2012 Stop lying Tycho, you were like 13 when NS 3.0 came out. Kids weren't playing NS1! That's a fact. *was 14 when NS 1.04 was out* I was in 7th grade and also 14 when I started playing it, in 2004. Also played tribes 2 and starcraft a lot. I think that math is correct... Forbin Posted November 4, 2012 Played a couple matches yesterday. I'm not sure how I feel about how they've given the aliens a commander instead of just letting the gorges build structures. That simple asymmetry made the game more interesting to me. Also, games seem to almost always go to the marines right now, as they're far easier to learn. As a skulk, I find it harder to walk on walls and ceilings with complex geometry. Oldschool pure brushed based BSP maps were easier to navigate.

Anecdotally it might seem like games go to marines, but balance is almost literally 50/50 wins/losses for each team. Drath Posted November 4, 2012 Been playing it off and on since the early betas when I pre-ordered it. I think it has most of the "magic" of the original, but I'm really questioning some gameplay differences between the two right now. Mostly to due with alien abilities. That being said, the early versions of the original seen many changes in alien abilities anyways until they finally settled. It's not running really good on my computer at the moment though. I get 70+fps in every situation... except when I don't. The game will stutter for like 5 seconds, like a full 5 seconds it will just sit there, then go normally again, it does this constantly almost sometimes unplayable. I've tried every setting/config too. It really sucks, but somehow I can still enjoy it... a good sign.
TheYoungCato Posted November 5, 2012 As a skulk, I find it harder to walk on walls and ceilings with complex geometry. Oldschool pure brushed based BSP maps were easier to navigate. Climbing walls feels smoother than how I remember it in the original HL mod. I actually really enjoy playing a skulk now, whereas I kind of hated it in the HL mod. Maybe I've just gotten better at dealing with the disorientation of first-person wall climbing, though. If there is one thing I do miss from NS1, it's getting eaten by an Onos- I remember fondly the first time that happened, unable to do anything but stare at the insides of a horrible alien monster for several minutes, and think "So...when do I get to respawn?" TychoCelchuuu Posted November 5, 2012 Being eaten by an Onos was certainly a unique experience but sitting and staring at a stomach for an extended period of time isn't much fun the 8th time it happens and I think it's understandable that the developers wanted to move away from that. Forbin Posted November 5, 2012 camo is amazingly fun. Makes being a skulk feel less hectic and more predatory.

Vegas Posted November 5, 2012 Being eaten by an Onos was certainly a unique experience but sitting and staring at a stomach for an extended period of time isn't much fun the 8th time it happens and I think it's understandable that the developers wanted to move away from that. I remember in the mod days they specifically said they wanted the balance to favor the aliens a bit more. It made them scarier for the marines and more people wanted to play them (even today it's always easier to get on the alien side)
Forbin Posted November 6, 2012 Yeah, the mech suits really upset the percieved awesomeness of the aliens IMO. To get an onos you have to do a lot of personal economy conserving, and play pretty well. Whereas the Marines can get exo suits built for them by the commander.
Lu Posted November 6, 2012 But likewise the alien commander can lay down eggs that you can use. Is that not the same thing?
TychoCelchuuu Posted November 6, 2012 It's pretty much exactly the same thing.
Forbin Posted November 6, 2012 I did not know that.
TychoCelchuuu Posted November 9, 2012 Gamespot had a review of this up that was kind of dumb - the reviewer didn't seem to have played the game for more than a few hours at most. It also had a bit of a low score. I was kind of sad because this sort of thing can hurt small indie games like this but now Gamespot has pulled the review and will post a new one, so that's pretty cool. Sno Posted July 2, 2013 I just bought this a couple days ago during a Steam sale and i think it's pretty damn incredible, i've been having a great time with it. I tried playing the original Natural Selection a couple times over the years, but it never clicked. Playing this one with friends who were already somewhat familiar has probably made the difference. Definitely feels like the kind of game you need somebody to mentor you through.I want to try commander at some point, but that commander's seat is pretty terrifying. Dewar Posted July 2, 2013 How's the multiplayer doing, number of people-wise? I considered buying it when it was on sale, but I was afraid it would be deserted.
