Guild Wars 2

Recommended Posts

Do we really not already have a thread for this? If we do I'm an idiot, a blind idiot. If not, well, discuss Guild Wars 2

I'm going to play it, I already pre-purched it like a lot of people, but honestly I don't see it staying fun for that long. A lot of the things it's doing to make it different from other MMOs makes it are negatives, for me personally. If I didn't have a TON of real life friends playing it I probably wouldn't buy it, but I do and that's probably worth a hell of a lot more than anything else in an online multiplayer game.

Edit: I should clarify, when I say there are things I don't like, I mean in an MMO. So for me Guild Wars 2 wont be an MMO, it'll just be a multiplayer game I play with a bunch of my friends when we're all online, and I'm sure I'll have a blast. I just won't spend the hours I spent in The early years of WoW or in EQ, and I won't care/stress about the game as much. Which isn't really a bad thing.

WvWvW (or W3) is going to suck up a lot of my time in the coming years. It's like DAoC without the crazy insta-kill army lines that tend to form up in DAoC wargrounds, and what Warhammer should have been. PvE I could care less about.

This.

For me PvE is probably never going to be a thing at all, I'm most likeley only going to do PvP, specifically WvW stuff (I don't much care for the SPvP stuff, capturing points is kind of meh, at least in my opinion)

I will be playing and will also most likely be found in world vs world vs world. From what I experienced during the beta, played right and with good leadership, it can be an incredibly strategic experience. It's also just fun seeing someone set up a whole mess of catapults on the hill overlooking an enemy gate and then charging through the smashed gate in a rush once the catapults have brought it down. Feels like something LoTRo should have had.

If there's enough of us playing, we could always do a Thumbs guild. Since you can join multiple guilds, it doesn't really matter if it's super small.

I heard Neogaf's starting up on the Gandara (EU) and Stormbluff Isles (US) servers, so I might tag along to the EU one.

I can think of nothing worse than a NeoGAF guild.

I'm playing, mostly the PvE, but I'll check out WvW and maybe do some sPvP pickups.

The most fascinating thing about Guild Wars 2, to me, is that it is brazenly built on top of Bartle's player types. Bartle theorised that there were three stable configurations for online games: games that mostly attracted socialisers, games that attracted achievers and killers in roughly equal numbers, and games that balanced out all four play types, with strong emphasis put towards increasing explorer player builds.

And here we are: a game where the basic gameplay loop is 'strike out in a direction and see what's going on', the chief method of progression is filling in the map, and has an intricate platforming challenge hidden in every zone, with rare events tucked away for people to find if they put enough effort into digging into the game. It's a game that scratches my explorer itch something fierce.

So we'll see: we'll finally get a big-budget MMO, not a MUD, not a MUSH, that will put Bartle's theory to the test on a grand scale.

Funny story; I made a list of what properties an MMORPG would need to have to knock WoW off its perch a few years ago, mostly just as a mental exercise. I figured it needed a strong solo game, as the big lesson learnt from WoW was that most players don't want to have to put the effort into seeking out relationships (which is fair enough; usually people form relationships due to being thrown together in shared circumstances). It needed to break away from the DIKU model, where you got XP by killing fairly simple monsters and so your success was a function of time spent. It couldn't be too different, because gamers won't spend money unless it's a sure thing, but it couldn't be too similiar, because it would be competing against WoW, with its history, content and network effects; it'd need to superficially resemble a typical MMORPG but reveal its differences over time. It would definitely need something better than the holy trinity, a system where players could pick their own roles or shift between them depending on what they wanted to try out. It'd also need to deal with the problems of friends not having anything to do together, and better than the CoH sidekick system did where you skip some stuff while your friend is around, but when they leave you have to trudge back to your own area. It'd need a better questing system, as traditional quests tend to drive players away from socialising normally. It'd need a distinctive artstyle so screenshots and machinima can serve to advertise the game, and it'd need day one buy-in to overcome WoW's network effects and make the most of the big launch splash, so I basically figured that Valve were the only ones that could possibly pull something like that off.

Looking back at it now, it's sort of an obvious list, but I was nevertheless surprised when I heard parts of my list being parroted back to me by ArenaNet's manifesto video and realised that ArenaNet would also qualify as a company that could get day one buy-in for their game. It looks like it'll do well; I'm still not sold they've really got a plan for keeping the world feeling full of life after people get to 80, but I already appreciate that the MMOs of 2012 aren't scared of WoW like their older brethren. I'm excited for the genre to get some life in it again, finally.

Excellent write-up. I too wonder what they've got planned for the end game because so far all they've delivered as far as plans go is: "you can replay the game with a different character." Then again, I personally wouldn't be tremendously cut-up if there was no end game as there is no subscription fee and I can see playing this on and off without feeling the urge to commit time thanks to the ever present wallet siphoning feeling of a sub.

Most of the GAF specific-game communities aren't that bad, to be honest. The TF2 community was the best for years! Then, finally, [the cool] people started quitting the game. ): The key is to not participate on the forums, because people on the forums (assholes) are completely different from people in the games (cool dudes).

But they never last longer than a month or two for MMOs, so it's not really worth it.

I am growing more tempted to purchase GW2. Bunch of people at my new job are getting it, and its lack of subscription fee makes it more welcoming, even though I'm tiring of the MMO formula... I'd also spend all my time in WvWvW because nothing else matters.

Eh, at least you know what you're getting. Especially on EU servers, finding a decent English-speaking server is better than taking a random chance and accidentally finding yourself on the unofficial Russian-only server.

I've played a fairly ridiculous amount of Guild Wars, so I'm naturally going to get into GW2. I already have a bit of a small community there, so I don't think I'll be partaking in any NeoGAF server stuff.

This was preordered for me as a birthday gift (upon my request) so I will obviously be playing it. Due to server "guesting" not being in place at launch and the person I know that will be on the game most being in the US, I'm going to be playing on the NA server Ehmry Bay, at least until guesting and such actually is implemented (or until I get sick of the latency). Home world switching will apparently be completely free and open at launch but will gradually be clamped down into costing gems, which is the GW2 currency that can either be earned in game or bought with real money, I believe.

What they've said is that you have items you can only buy using skill points, which you normally use to unlock skills but when you run out will likely get plowed into these items. After you hit max level, you start earning skill points instead of levelling. They've also said they intend to retrofit old areas with new content, potentially adding new things like secret bosses and suchlike.

Oh yeah, I don't entirely know how the friends system works yet as I won't be able to start playing until tomorrow, but my account is Gwardinen.8693 if anyone wants to add me either.

Yeah, I don't know... So far, not enjoying the game at all. Taking progression out of an MMO just seems like a bad idea. I got to level 18 or so yesterday and then stopped. Just not finding it compelling at all. I think at this point I might ust give my account to a friend.

At least try some W3 first.

Can I get some clarification on what you mean by "taking progression out of an MMO"?

I saw a post on guru that kind of sums up how I feel about the game so far.

"The difference for me, is that in WoW (and most other MMOs) you have marked progression. You get stronger with each level, get new abilities and move on to a zone with more powerful mobs. In GW2, leveling has no real bearing on your progression, yes you earn skill points, but all the ones that are really interesting to me I have by level 20-25. You go to new areas and see new mobs, but my characters feels very stagnant. This creates a huge disconnect between my character and I."

It just feels really dull. I've been doing a fair amount of PvP, I mean I knew I'd find PvE kind of dumb, but even that is meh.

Game is probably just not for me, whcihc sucks because I really wanted to like it.

You are reading and seriously considering something posted on Guru.

That's not to diminish how you feel about the game, mind you, but Guru is more or less the worst elements of entitlement, memes and NeoGAF rolled into one hive of scum and idiots.

Funnily enough, I haven't really played any during headstart either, but that's probably more because Dark Souls is consuming me again.

I've never been to Guru before, even when I played GW1, I just googled some things to read and see how everyone else felt about the game and happened to see one post in a multi page thread which I agreed with.
