Great photos, everyone.

Here's a few recent ones that I'm moderately proud of. Been experimenting with a few different styles in the past few months.

Nice work. I particularly like the black-and-white ones – the two buildings one is really great.

Thanks for the kind words, y'all.

I'm bummed as shit that my SD card reader doesn't work with Windows 10. I can't even connect the camera via USB to pull down images.

It really crushes my drive to get out and take photos.

Incredible.

I've seen a few other photos of the aftermath, including one of all those hundreds of burnt-out cars neatly lined up. I feel conflicted because, as well as being an effective document of the event, they're also in some cases pleasing images, which feels like an inappropriate reaction to something so horrendous. I guess it's a similar conundrum to enjoying fiction based on real tragedy, and so on.

I've been experimenting with a couple of lenses. I really like my 100mm macro lens (Canon F/2.8L), since it is great for portraits as well as macros. I did these for some of my friends before I left my last jobs, for work websites etc (all astrophysicists :D

Then again I used the same lens to take these close-ups

On the other end of the scale I also got a new super tele lens (Tamron 150-600mm)

I have my best moon shot so far

Went to a friend's wrestling show. He wrestled the silver guy, I do believe (I left early).

Whoa, that looks to be an interesting event! I like garbage bag man.

I've been doing a photo-a-week thing with my brother in law, this week was "modern architecture" but I kind of strayed from that theme a bit because I found this cool old polish restaurant near me with awesome old neon signs. I mean technically it modern because it isn't ancient :P

The placement of the sign closest to me made for a really cool blue/orange/separation at the corner and ground. I may have went over the top with the saturation, but the longer exposure helped make the colors apparent anyway.

These are super interesting. This is going to sound weird, but they seem like the pieces of film you get in special editions of movies. Small pieces of narrative in a much larger story.

I haven't commented for a while, because I can't find a way to make repeatedly saying "that's great!" not seem repetitive, but this stuff is all really great. I particularly like those shots through car windows, Architecture. I've experimented with reflections on glass, but not with such success.

Anyway, for someone who hates having his picture taken, my dad photographs pretty well:

Dad

Recently I've been starting to try out processing my photos in black and white. I'd kind of shied away from it in the past for fear of seeming pretentious, but it often comes out looking better, particularly when I struggle to get the colours looking good. For reference, here is where I ended up with the colour version of this image. He's far too red but we were sitting under a heating lamp that gave off this intense orange glow which, while it looked quite nice on the camera's preview screen, didn't hold up so well once I'd imported the pictures to Lightroom. Perhaps desaturating it a bit would help, but I still don't think I'd be as satisfied with it as I am the B&W version. Really, it's a bit of a mess. The longer I spend on a picture, the more I lose perspective.

Also, a YouTube video recently reminded me of the existence of split toning, so I've been experimenting a bit with that as well (such as in the above photograph). I've yet to get a good feel for what works well in colour pictures, but it seems pretty easy to get good results (to my eye) in monochrome images. For comparison, here is how it looks in straight greyscale.

Yeah, that is always rough. I get that when editing big patches of photos from an event or something. I will usually do my first round of edits, comes back the next day and then see what I think.

I mirror your feelings on black and white, I've totally avoided it for fear if seeming pretentious. Your portrait of your dad is great, there is a lot of personality there, you made the right choice with B&W.

A facet of my problem is that when I run short on patience I get a bit frustrated and will sometimes just upload everything as it stands to be done with it. Then I come back later with fresh eyes and see other things I could try, but once it's online I don't normally want to take the old one down, since it's already been made punlic. I mean, my audience is basically zero, so it doesn't really matter, but it still bothers me a little.

EDIT: Looking at it again in Lightroom, I think part of the problem with the colour version linked to above is a colourspace conversion issue or something. It doesn't look quite as over-red in there. Another wretched complication.

EDIT 2: I took another crack at a colour version, but this time more stylised. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.
