Steam Summer Sale 2012

Recommended Posts

The sci-fi stuff that ties all the games together is absolutely horrible, in my opinion, and I have no interest whatsoever to see what happens next. Nevertheless, the three Assassin's Creed II games are very enjoyable and there is actual closure to Ezio's story in Assassin's Creed Revelations.

Woot! Dead Rising 2: Off the Record for dumb cheap! Considering that most of the other stuff I am looking to buy probably isn't going to go much further down in price I think I might have bought everything I was looking to get.

So Steam closed its doors? Or is there some awesome discount going on? I haven't been able to reach the storefront for almost an hour

Any opinions/advice on which part of the Men of War series its best to grab as a newcomer? I'm assuming Assault Squad or the original game? I seem to remember both Red Tide & Vietnam having rather fearsome reputations which is currently putting me off them.

For 12 bucks you can't go wrong with the entire thing. That's an enormous value for the series.

That said, yeah, the original and Assault Squad are the best places to start. Condemned Heroes and Vietnam are very punishing.

Stronghold 3 Gold is a castle simulator type thing? Worth a tenner?

Assault Squad probably but it's not a single player game in spirit. I still think the original Soldiers Heroes of World War II is the best version, even for MP since it's far less chaotic and random, but in particular for singleplayer. It has infinite re-playability and just seems a more focused game with greater parallels to Commandos than Company of Heroes. You can get that on GOG.com and there's mods to spruce up the graphics.

Definitely not.

To expand on MoW;

The original had a single-player campaign and various multiplayer modes.

Assault Squad is primarily multiplayer skirmish focused.

Vietnam and Condemned Heroes are single-player/coop focused campaign games with crushing difficulty.

Thanks for the advice Orvidos & Cigol, think I'll grab just the original, then if I enjoy it I'll I can always see if I can persuade a few others to get grab a copy and have some multiplayer mode fun next time assault squad is on sale.

I think I'm going to wait for the next sale to get the Assassin's Creed bundle, by then AC3 will be out and we are likely to know if it's over or it they'll make 20 AC3 games before AC4 is out. (Can you tell I really don't trust them to just end the series?)

I'd be shocked if AC3 was the last game in the franchise to be honest. The fact that they are setting it in a new time period with new characters makes me think it's the sort of franchise that has no end in sight, a la GTA.

In other news, I bought the GTA complete pack today. £5 is a ridiculous bargain verging on stealing.

Well there may or may not finally be an ending to Assassin's Creed at some point, but there have definitely not been any hints that Assassin's Creed III is going to be it. So if that's what you're waiting for, don't bother. I would be extremely surprised if that series were to end without the marketing making a big deal of it, and since not a word has been said in that direction and the game is only 5 months away, I suspect this is not the last planned AC game.

I have a question: I'm eying the wargame: european escalation steam offer. Does anyone know how good it is?

The Three Moves Ahead guys liked it a lot, and the free DLC has improved almost all their complaints. I went ahead and bit, since I liked R.U.S.E. and love the military porn of Cold War hardware.

Imagine World In Conflict, but on maps almost 6x the size. Also without the horrible imbalances WiC MP had. It's an utterly fantastic game, the MP is great and challenging.

I just noticed buried amongst the mounds of reduced price games is the news that Pre-order for Orc's Must Die 2 appears to have started.

The original game was one of the pleasant discoveries of last year, it arrived without much fanfare and then surprised me providing a fast paced, good looking, inventive and (in later levels) genuinely challenging take on the tower defence genre.

Now as we all know Co-op makes everything better so this should be pretty damn awesome. The Originals still at 50% off in the sale as well.

Well that escalated quickly... I bought 11 games today, almost all of them individual purchases, not bundles. Also I gifted Train Simulator 2012 to my friend, because I was feeling philanthropic.

1085 dollars worth of trains? You could give that to dying kids you know.

I cannot wait for this! Me and the gf would play hours of Dungeon Defenders and Orcs Must Die always played better than DD, it was just missing that multiplayer component.

For what it's worth, Indie Game: The Movie is also currently $5 on their website if you'd prefer having the 1080p file on any number of local devices in your house.
