Thanks for that, vimes. I'm also pretty tired of super violence in general (the blood spats on the walls behind the Combine I shot in HL2 were unnecessary IMHO) and it's good to hear someone else is...questioning it, too.

I have literally no issue with CG trailers, as long as they're fun to watch, and this one was. If your issue is specifically because this is the debut trailer (and it seems like that is indeed your issue), I dunno. It doesn't really bug me. I like getting a feel for the setting. It does a good job of getting me excited (which is, after all, its purpose), but at the same time, I'm intelligent and patient enough to wait for the gameplay videos that will inevitably arrive.

If you are tired of super violence, perhaps you shouldn't be playing game where you are a disembodied weapon gunning down things.

I'm really trying hard to forget about this game until it's released. I was freaking out for months before DX3 came out, and that... did not live up to my expectations. I have enjoyed the heck out of Arkane's previous games though, so maybe I worry too much.

I agree with part of what you're saying but I think you're looking at it the wrong way. I think far too many games are centered around violence--but I don't think the solution to that is to just still have the violence but provide less evidence of it. If you're running around shooting people in the head as your sole method of interacting the world, I think the least the game can do is remind you of that. It seems to me the more legitimate alternative is for more games not to be about that kind of thing in the first place.

Very good answer. I remember swinging a crowbar into the face of a now headcrab-less zombie in Half-Life 2, just to see what would happen. The texture of his face turned into an unrecognizable, bloody mess.

Like DoomMunky, I was disturbed by this level of detail. But then I thought, "Wait, I'm the one who decided to violate this corpse; this is just the consequence of my action."

As far as Dishonored goes, I hope we are able to play it so it isn't about slaughtering everybody. But how else do you get "revenge" that "solves everything"?

The reason the Dishonored trailer states that revenge solves everything is because the cliche is 'revenge doesn't solve anything'. Far from being thoughtprovoking, it comes across as a lazy attempt to be extreme and contrary. Of course, once you start thinking about it, it's pretty hard to remember any game or story in this genre in which revenge was eventually aborted because the conclusion arrived that it really didn't solve anything.

Not a knock on the game, just the advertising of it, which by necessity has to appeal to the Extreme Teen crowd.

I don't really think that, on the topic of "shooting someone in the face", the most crucial aspect Video game should expose is that red goo gushes out of the wound. I'd say it's the fact that you take away this individual future good or bad impact on the world.

In that sense, I don't think the way Dishonored depicts the physical consequences of killing is very interesting aesthetical or morally, like Chris suggests (if I get his post right).

That being said, I was not criticizing Dishonored for not offering an existencialist point of view on assassination. That would be having demented expectations.:yep:

My remark was meant to convey that I'm saddened that my main reason to around this world and experience those interesting gameplay system seems be gutting half of the population in order to prove that my character was wrongly accused of murder :blink:

*Of course, as always, we must take statements like this from the developers with a grain of salt. But even so. Also, I'm guessing that doesn't include the actual target of your assassination, but by golly, it'd sure be neat if it did.

I'm all for revengeance as long as it's set up well. Like, I hope it's more Monte Cristo than Green Goblin.

At least our protagonist's "iron mask" is a hella badass-looking skullface.

I'm skeptical of settings that mix old-fashioned stuff with futuristic stuff. They're almost always horribly dumb and awful, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

Something that bothered me about Dishonored was that I couldn't think of a good insult for it. And by "good" insult I mean something terrible, like these:

"More like Ass Effect..."

"More like Unfarted..."

"More like Dork Souls..."

But nothing was out there for Dishonored.

Until I saw this:

"More like Disbonered..."

You can't have a forum thread without cheap, juvenile insults. Now I can feel confident that Dishonored has everything a game needs to become a success.

There are, we’re told eight or nine different broad methods of completing a level. These were but two, and both were fatal. Another would have been to look for side missions in the streets around the Golden Cat – which, despite being a multi-tier building filled with side rooms and cellars and surrounded by gardens, constitutes “less than half” of the level’s overall space. One side mission opens up the roof path that allowed a stealthier entrance to the cat, but another would have involved doing favours for a local gangster and thus persuading him to help Corvo’s cause. It’s not shown today, but done right this results in the gangster kidnapping the Pendletons and forcing them to work in their own slave mines.

Release date was announced today. Is going to come in October 9th.

Maybe this will replace the empty hole that was left by Chris Remo's Ken Levine's Bioshock Infinite.

I think it's probably to Dishonored's benefit not to release alongside BioShock Infinite, as I would imagine there's a fairly strong audience crossover there, but I would hardly say that there was a hole. This autumn is already looking packed with games, and I truly wish that they were more spread out across the year.

You're really in the wrong hobby for that wish. Autumn is basically the time when gamers spend a ton of money on games that we don't end up finishing until next Autumn.

Yes, but the hole was my hole in the schedule, it doesn't need to be a hole in general for everyone. I should've stated that more clearly I suppose. :)

Oh, that reminds me. For anyone that hasn't noticed yet, the latest Bethesda Podcast episode is about Dishonored. Haven't listened to it yet but I'd be surprised if our own Congrats Nick wasn't involved in asking some dudes some questions about turning into rats or something.
