Far Cry 3

I can highly recommend not using the camera to tag things at all. I turned off weapon tagging, too. It makes stealth actually challenging. If I need it I use the syringe that shows the enemies ("through scent" ha!), which gives a nice 'oh shit it's wearing off!' sense of urgency.

I've also taped a small paper circle over the minimap. It makes the game way, WAY better. I actually explore. I have to look through buildings and actually see them to find the loot boxes, not just zip through them with half an eye on the minimap, heading toward the gem icon. Covering the minimap makes it a game about paying attention (and there's still enough UI frippery that I can orient effectively). Again, highly recommended.

Anecdote: I was scouting a pirate encampment from a hillside when I heard growling nearby. A tiger was basking in the sun about 10 feet to my right. It hadn't seen me. I crept away and pulled out some C4, thinking it would be sweet to blow it up and get its pelt, but throwing the C4 alerted it to where I was, and it started to charge. I hammered the trigger button and nearly died in the blast. My vision goes grey and I fall off the hill, running away to the sounds of the camp being alerted. "What the hell was THAT?!" they say.

I never did find the tiger body.

Haha what. This seems a bit excessive, but I do something similar by not unjamming the radio towers. That way all you see is a bunch of black, and some major encampment/quest markers. No topography, nothing.

I only unjam them when I'm running out of things to do, since they unlock a few sidequests.

Also that blindfire revelation, what. That's amazing. Best FPS cover system ever.

I sit huddled between two pot plants with a heat lamp pointing at my forehead. It really helps the immersion

You should really tie the power supply of that heat lamp to a photo-sensor in front of the screen. Nothing pulls me more out of the immersion than having a hot forehead while standing in the shadows.

I also have a starving Rottweiler chained up in the room, ready to be unleashed at a moments notice.

Maps in games like this are something that bother me to an extent, I'm pleased to know there's the option of just not doing the radio thing to make them too detailed. One of the things that's always made MGS3 (a game I can't help but compare this to) so appealing to me is the feeling of being out there in the jungle it instils, and the lack of guidance. They even do away with the 'cone of vision' markers that were so traditional in the previous games, and you literally have to rely on what you can see. Absolutely brilliant.

I'm hoping I can gain a similar level of immersion from Far Cry 3 by not unjamming the towers and not using the tagging shit.

How are the difficulty levels? Is it like Crysis where higher levels fundamentally change some things, for example making all the enemies speak Korean instead of English and making them significantly more aware of their surroundings? Or is it basically just a 'less health and saves' type approach? I love well-executed difficulty shifts like the former and will happily play on hard during my first playthrough if they've taken that approach.

I switched it to hard very early on. I couldn't tell you what the difference is. But the game is still a cake walk.... apart from when fighting against the wildlife. The tigers take like 20 pistol bullets to the face which seems kind of absurd

So this 'going into cover' thing, and 'blindfiring'. How do you do this?

My stats screen says I have 100% accuracy from cover. I'm like, 'hell yeah!'. then I realize I've taken 2 shots from cover. Well. A bit less impressive.

If you stand at the edge of a wall, facing the wall. Cry Guy will hold his gun up at a funny angle, now if you press iron sights he'll pop out of cover. Or hit shoot and he'll pop out with some blind fire madness

I don't understand how the save/checkpoint stuff works. So many times I'm told I can't save because I'm on a mission. If I quit now and resume, will I start right before accepting this mission, or some weird other place? I made my way all over to the old mansion (early in the game) and was immediately sent off to some caves. Apparently I'm unable to take a break now (and the game behaves very poorly when "minimised") – if I just quit, I'll start at the mansion again, right?

How do I know when I'm "on a mission" and when I just have an objective? I mean, why wasn't getting to the mansion a mission? Or was it? What is mission?

Indeed, I'm dying quite a lot and I'm being resporned all over the shop.

If you're on a mission you'll have a pulsing yellow circle on your mini map (but this includes side mission as well) if you've got nothing going on you'll have an ! on your map leading you to the next mission mission.

I'm at 5.30 of play time and I've only just taken out my 4th base (of 32). But I've killed a hell of a lot of animals \o/ I think animal hunting should be top priority as the game is a lot more fun now that I can carry 4 pistols (not really, I'm packing a light machine gun and its glorious) although I'm not really using it much, my tactic at the moment is throw stone, stab, drag, throw stone, stab, drag, throw stone... Etc

I don't think I've ever seen a game that does so much I enjoy, and yet so much I don't at the same time.

Watching a tiger wander around, eating people is great fun. I love that I can kill people silently with the bow and then grab my arrows back, I love some of the design choices in telling you where interesting things are. The smoke pillars and camp fire are just great little touches that scream "hey there's something here!" without actually being terribly obvious.

And yet there are so, so many problems that frustrate me, occasionally to the point of quitting for a while. I accidentally wandered into a mission zone, which now means I MUST complete the mission or it forcibly reloads the game for me. WTF, I didn't want to do that mission yet! Another time I wandered into a camp, trying to remember how to "free" it and have the rebels take over (hadn't done that since the tutorial). Kill all the guys right? Well, they just respawn indefinitely, I can't kill all the guys!

The basic premise is great, everything builds on itself. You need more money to get that flamethrower so you need a bigger wallet to get enough money so you need to find the right animals to get a bigger wallet so you need to take down the radio tower. A long series of short terms goals, building towards the ultimate goal, which is something you chose, whoo!

And yet... ugh. I turned it on hard and turned off weapon marking but... Ok, the game looks great on occasion, but has some of the worst pop in I've ever seen. Things disappear and reappear sometimes at random, trees literally grow bigger as you approach them. Occasionally it looks like a PS2 game, and a bad one, if you're in the right spot. The water sometimes looks like someone barfed up a lot of gushers, and while the faces are friggen awesome the variety in terrain is "tropical island jungle, to MORE tropical island jungle!"

And then there's stuff like the mini map. Which I wish I could turn off, because no, I don't want all seeing god vision. Or the AI, it is, as always, just awful. Oh sure, sometimes it seems rather good. But then you "figure it out". I've done that. Keep to cover and wait. I've managed to stab over a dozen guys in a row, most of them attacking at once, just by sitting in a shack, waiting for one to approach, running out to stab him to death and then running back in. Over and over and over.

And yet some of this game is SOOOO good. I am the king of ridiculously bad driving in this game and I love it! Another cliff WHEEE! I actually enjoy dying from fire and falling simply because it's so... physically attached. Your character always feels like a dude and not some invincible, physics defying thing like in other games. I even managed to drive a jeep off a cliff, have it land vertically, face down. The windshield cracked, the guy braced against the wheel like he was actually vertical, it was awesome!

This would be, could have been, one of the best games I've ever played; if only it didn't have so many oddities (douchebag story, etc.) dragging it down all the time. Hey look, do you remember what the main quest is, you should since we REMIND YOU IN BIG FRIGGEN LETTERS EVERY FIVE MINUTES BLINK BLINK BLINK YOU ARE AN ADHD MORON BLINK BLINK!!! Still, I'm going to enjoy getting back to it later.

So many times I've got in a car and within 5 sec I'm either completely submerged in water or falling down a cliff whilst on fire. I should really pay more attention to my surroundings... Or at least peel that little bit of paper off the mini map

No, just kill all the guys.

Not here! Infinitely respawning dudes in one camp I found, whoo! I tried, I tried for half an hour on one camp alone. Thirty plus bodies later, I poke into a cave that's in the camp, turn around and more dudes standing 15 feet from me where they weren't before.

I'm playing on hardest difficulty, no tagging, no stealth, no crafting, no fast travel. It's almost as hard as Far Cry 2.

The things I don't like are not being able to skip cutscenes, the terrible menus and the endless notification popups that you can't turn off.

EDIT: The save system is the fucking worst. I'm trying to get at the FC2-ness but the game is trying really hard to annoy and hinder me. Probably not gonna play more and I've not even played 2 hours.

One stupid bug a came across. Whilst doing the blank panther hunting mission. I'd scared the animal off quite a bit as I was loosing arrows with gay abandon. A message popped up saying I was leaving the hunting area and the mission will restart if I don't turn back as I watch my prey scamper away out of harms reach... Clever girl.

Man I hope they release some dinosaur DLC, turn the game into a robert muldoon simulator. Fuck that would be amazing

So I just started this up and played for about an hour just to see if my PC could handle it. I am so glad I can run it on Ultra settings on 2560x1440 resolution with a steady framerate. Definately looking forward to getting more seriously into it over the weekend.

Does that actually work? I'm sure I looted some dudes I'd arrowed and didn't get my arrows back.
