(Unconfirmed)Telltale tackles.. KING'S QUEST?

Recommended Posts

Thanks! Sorry it took so long to return.

If Sierra games taught me one thing, it was this - life is cruel, unforgiving and full of punishment, so save when you win, and load when you lose.

It did help me through secondary school when computers would crash, because I was a compulsive saver, so thanks Sierra for grinding that into me!

Activision still owns Sierra and hence the King's Quest license, right?

Haven't bought an Activision game since Modern Warfare 2 (which was in a moment of weakness). The company has only gotten worse since then. Activision is presumably getting money from this license, so this is one Telltale game I will not be buying.

That's kind of my dilemma. I've been boycotting Activision for almost 2 years now, but usually lap-up Telltale's games. Well, I've been disappointed in their bug-filled releases, but usually I'm all ready for new Telltale. So I'm extremely indecisive. I think this is one that I *will* actually leave to reviews...yet, at the same time, it doesn't feel right.

How so ?:erm:

The worst bugs I get in Telltale games are missing lines, yet many GOTY games have game breaking bugs in them, by today's unfortunately low standards, TT games are pretty polished bug-wise.

Buying Telltale games has always been an automatic process; buying Activision games was never an option. This kind of upsets the balance, so I'll just wait for reviews to roll in before deciding if the plunge is worth taking.

A new King's Quest game that takes a reboot angle at the series.

I can't really say anything about this, I own all the KQ games from the Roberta Williams Anthology, but Mask of Eternity is missing and I did own that also years ago, but got rid of it because that game just was so bad. I've never completed even one KQ game so it will be pretty interesting to see how this goes.

So reboot means propably that there is no role for Roberta Williams as an advisor or something like that? Well I doubt she would be interested anyway, I believe the Williams family are sailing across the world all the time?

So, assuming this is a hit, what are the odds that TellTale then gets a crack at the other Sierra franchises? Space Quest, Gabriel Knight, Leisure Suit Larry, Quest for Glory...

And if they did, would they be able to bring back Jane Jensen, Al Lowe, The Guys From Andromeda, etc as co-designers/writers?

I would LOVE (literally) another LSL game. Isn't Al Lowe always looking for work anyways? :P

Don't you remember the recent LSL games? They were made without Al Lowe and quite dreadful... in an amusing way?

Either way, it's a bit unlikely they'll let that license go, haven't you notice that you can get all the other Sierra adventures as digital downloads EXCEPT LSL? That doesn't bode well...

Whoa, I completely forgot about the last 2 LSL games. I must've blocked them from my mind or something. It's disappointing that they don't have digital downloads for LSL series, but then I'm not sure how fun LSL7 would be without the scratch&sniff pad. Maybe they could mail them or something.

They were kinda forgettable or so bad you had to mentally block them, depending on your tolerance.

I've played LSL7 a few times, but I don't think I ever bothered with the scratch N' sniff thing, maybe the first time?

Frankly, I don't think they want to make or even distribute games with such sexual content anymore, even Japan seems to be afraid of "naughty" games.:hmph:

(Answering my own question)

Adventuregamers.com words it thusly:

"Telltale has entered into an agreement with Activision, current owner of the rights to the classic Sierra On-Line adventure franchises, to create new episodic games based on these series. The first will be King’s Quest."

This implies possibilities for series beyond King's Quest! (Although, let's face it, KQ itself is going to be a 2012 series at the earliest) So my guess is this will be dependent on sales, etc. And will they collaborate with the old Sierra creators? This would be fantastic!

I was going to say how unlikely it is for them to get the people who worked on those games, but... After seeing who they got to work on BTTF, who knows? Telltale just keeps surprising us!

Doesn't Codemasters own the rights to make crappy Larry Lovage games now?

It would be awesome to have one more real Leisure Suit Larry Laffer game from Al Lowe and forget these two last horrible games made by High Voltage and Team 17.

Someday I'd still like to play LSL6 the full talkie version. I still got the Leisure Suit Larry's Greatest Hits & Misses from 17 years ago, seriously has it been that long?? Oh hell...

That collection anyway did not have the talkie version in it.

How many versions of the LSL collection are they? I think they released more after that, but each had less somehow?:erm:

I must have the same version as you, because I had no idea LSL6 had a full talkie version!

I'm pretty sure I made a thread about how the last LSL game from Team 17 was the most glorious train wreck ever? I've never played a game that's so dreadful and awesome at the same time!

I think they made at least three or four different collection's at least. Sierra, Vivendi and Activision have all made their own collections if I'm correct.

By the way, maybe this will enable Leisure Suit Larry 7 to go to GoG.

Then you could "use" the scratch N' sniff card again.

There were 4 or 5 versions of most of the Sierra collections. I remember re-purchasing the Space Quest collection specifically because the new version included a trailer for the (never-released) "Space Quest 7." That was the only change - a new trailer. Such were the days before the internet.

I'm pretty sure the only Leisure Suit Larry collection with the talkie version of six, besides possibly the newest one released by Vivendi for dollar bins, was the Ultimate one that included Larry 7 and Casino as well.

I don't know how I feel about Telltale hinting at more Sierra adventure continuations. I feel King's Quest was a terrible first choice or any choice, but on the rest, I guess I would want the original designers to be involved.

But I would also worry about the old Sierra designers being involved because besides Jane Jensen, everyone else has altogether stopped working on games it seems, unlike the ever active LucasArts favorites. Before most of the major franchises ended, they only had one installment, if any of streamlined LucasArts influenced designed before being told by the Sierra top dogs to make some half assed action adventure which I think none saw the light of day except Mask of Eternity. Leisure Suit Larry 7 probably was the most evolved in terms of Sierra design and interface, but it seems like any new Leisure Suit Larry installment Telltale is incredibly unlikely.

Hmm... You're right, none of them seem to be working in the game industry anymore, do they even know how modern gaming works? They probably think dead ends and cheap death are still fashionable!

Al Lowe seems pretty cool, if you flick through his Larry 5 design doc he posted on his site, even then he was pushing for the removal of frustrating deaths and stupid copy protection stuff.

The later Sierra games had already started moving away (slowly) from dead ends and cheap deaths.

As for "are they still working?" Josh Mandel, the "third guy from Andromeda," was making games for awhile (and was also involved with the now-canceled Space Quest 7 fan project.) Mark Crowe is still working. Jane Jensen, as you mentioned, is still active. Corey and Lori Ann Cole have apparently gone batshit insane. Scott Murphy, Al Lowe, and the Williamses have obviously called it quits.

Hmm, I think that in games like Torin's Passage and KQ7 they removed the chances of completely ruining the game and if you died you could start from just before you died? But "Sierra = Moon Logic & cheap deaths" is still deeply ingrained in my brain!

Wow, I didn't even know there was a third "Guy from Andromeda"! It still looks like it would be a bad idea to bring most of them back into the game industry.

Al Lowe was working for some years (2004-2007?) on his new "Larry" game called Sam Suede: Undercover Exposure, but I think I read that has been cancelled years ago. These days he is not working in gaming as far as I know, but propably would still love to be involved in the making of a new Larry game.

I remember he really wanted to be in the team to make the Magna Cum Laude horrible piece of crap game and in the end voiced his concern because the game was shaping up to be a turd of a game.

Torin's Passage reminds me that and Freddie Pharkas need to be requested to GoG.

Torin's Passage was fun, but even then there was a sort of juvenility to the game that makes me think I wouldn't really enjoy it today.
