Dead Island fails to live up to its name and is in fact alive

That trailer was stunning.

Not only did it look incredible, but it was also amazingly effective. I need to know more.

. I don't have any other place to link you to except for that unfortunate cesspool of diarrhea IGN. Sorry.

Some stuff:

1. Zombies, how original.

2. I like how the trailer is edited - the idea is super cool - though Random Lingerie Zombie is doing her hardest to remind you that this is, first and foremost, a video game with realistic market expectations.

3. Why is it Dead Island if everyone is undead?

4. This says nothing about the game itself, except for maybe that we'll play as the mum.

5. But look at all the blood.

Guy kills zombies in reverse while I play unfitting music.

If the story elements play out well, this might be on my radar.

I have some serious doubts as to how well the tone of the GAME will hold up to the tone of that trailer. If they can pull it off, then they've got a real winner, but, I dunno. Those goal posts are high.

Then again, they are an Eastern European developer, so even if they fail, I expect them to fail spectacularly. Definitely interested!

This sounds interesting from the IGN write-up.

The sum up: 1st person action, melee combat, found weaponry with durability, rpg elements and story focused co-op/single player campaign. It's also a scheduled 2011 release (360, PSTriple and PC ).

It will be interesting to see if they find a way to have the same emotional weight of the trailer in-game. If it were like SOS on the snes, where you try to find survivors while escaping a disaster, I could see lots of room for actual loss of important cast in gameplay. Maybe they'll do that and have co-op companions as well as escorted survivors.

I'm excited to see more.

Not that much interested at first, but it's apparently also coming to PC so I'll put it down to the radar somewhere with low priority. I hope it's actual PC version and not just a port.

The way the trailer is built is pretty nice, at least it's trying to be unique even though the main subject seems to be zombies.

They're Polish.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't PC first.

Not so much interested in another Zombie FPS - But the RPG and realism elements might just win me over.

If its:

"Far Cry 2 meets Dead Rising" ign.com

Then I am very interested.

Nice eye catching trailer too, I know people who aren't even interested in games talking about this one.

Maybe not surprisingly, I was a bit disappointed by the trailer. It starts of well, in a way; really, really getting my attention by showing a dead child, and for some reason I instantly feel the trailer has to justify this. I feel the motif (or whatever it's called) is so powerful and unwieldy the whole thing can either be very powerful or very tasteless. Then it goes into the more commonplace decapitation axe massacre thing and fails (in my opinion(!)).

Kudos for being more interesting than most trailers of any genre, though.

When did the zombie trend really get out of control anyway? With L4D?

How come everybody is sick and tired of zombies, but not of shooting bad guys in gas masks? At least you make several kinds of zombies, but all the gas masked men look alike to me..:hmph:

Anyway, this game is definitely on my radar now!

Are there really that many zombie games? I can think of Left for Dead, Dead Rising, Dead Space, and Plants vs. Zombies as the only games directly about zombies (excluding Dead Island, of course). Beyond that, Halo and Call of Duty feature zombies, but not very prominently. I suppose it's a bit odd zombies specifically appear with any amount of frequency, but it doesn't seem out of control.

EDIT: And horror games, I guess. I think they might be exempt.

Unless you're referring to culture as a whole, but then the zombie trend (where there is one) isn't the fault of video games. I'd blame Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later.

Alternatively, I don't know anything about video games.

No, I don't think so. I'd wager if we counted up all the games in various genres (including subgenres of, say, horror), zombies wouldn't really be THAT high on the list. Maybe higher than in the past, but... eh.

There are definitely more in recent years (2009 takes the cake). I think zombies just work because they are an easily recognizable enemy. When someone says you're fighting zombies, you expect a lot of enemies trying to grab you an attack you. They don't need to tout the amazing way the AI knows how to hide behind cover or flank you. Nation Red, Dead Nation, Killing Floor, Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead, Zombie Driver, CoD Nazi Zombies, Crackdown 2, and RDR Undead Nightmare have action that is almost immediately understood once you say zombie. I just comes down to how you like that action to be handled.

I had a big post about how the older preview stuff looked kinda meh, and my general disappointment, but this Destructoid Preview renewed my hopes. It's a bit more in-depth and has larger images. It seems this game will be more Fallout-esque than I thought, with lots of sidequests and story driven content. Also, at one point it mentions an assassin class. Before I though it sounded like Zeno Clash with health and attack speed upgrades, but it seems more nuanced than that.

I think everyone says they are "sick" of zombie games just to say it sometimes. I really don't get the problem playing another one, when the ones that are out there play so differently. Zombies are a good enemy type that can be interpreted a number of different ways and I can't get enough of games with zombies personally.

Maybe because zombies have boring ai, zombie sees player, zombie chases player one of them dies. Repeat. Generate the zombies so that players are challenged. Opposed toenemies flanking you and fleeing when in trouble.

I think the real problem is some people just aren't into zombies. Kind of like people have bitched about there being too many World War 2 games or too many space marine games — in many cases the complainers have only played one or two such games anyway, while those into such games continue enjoying them.

As mentioned before there aren't that many zombie games, and certainly not ones that evoke the atmosphere of absolute hopelessness and dread things like 28 Weeks Later do (which it looks like Dead Island is going for).

I'd rather have an enemy that runs straight at me than one that I have to hunt down for several minutes... "smart" enemies kill the flow of the game for me when they are too smart!:yep:

You're probably right, I despise those other genres and I've only played one or two of those kind...:hmph:

Also, they make for a great theme (if done right). A setting, more than an enemy type.

See: oh wait, I can't think of any games that have done it right, yet. x: That trailer certainly did, though.

Stubbs the Zombie and Dead Head Fred were cool zombie games although in those you ARE the zombie... :hmph:

Dead Rising is a good zombie game IMHO.
