twmac Posted February 9, 2011 I was searching for an image for my article on my own blog, when I find one I do the author courtesy of perusing for a bit. It resulted in me finding this: http://www.chrisflett.com/alpha-male-rant/time-to-grow-up-man-boy/ It is quite special, I posted a polite response but it hasn't been approved. Anyways, I thought it would make a good companion piece to the face palm post about Bulletstorm in the gaming section. I can't quite bring myself to dislike the guy as he clearly thinks he is on to something.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted February 9, 2011 His book looks good, though. http://www.chrisflett.com/book/ Did I say good...? Hmm.
Orv Posted February 9, 2011 *Sigh* Will we never be understood?! We tried to be decent men, in an indecent time! Well, actually, we probably didn't, considering we're on the internet playing video games. People who think they know what they're talking about with sweeping generalization, Series 2! Moving swiftly along. . .
Lu Posted February 9, 2011 Random guy with a blog doesn't like something other people do. I'm glad I have him to tell me what real men are and do. I wouldn't know what to do with my life otherwise.
miffy495 Posted February 9, 2011 Anyone who uses the term "alpha male" with any kind of seriousness (unless they are actually talking about wolves or something) has automatically dug themself into a hole as a helplessly old-fashioned, likely sexist idiot. After seeing the term "alpha male rant" I'm kind of curious as to why you'd bother to continue reading in the first place.

Roderick Posted February 9, 2011 That was depressingly awful. Caught up in facile stereotypes of what it means to be human. Arbitrary nonsense, and he doesn't even understand it. What an unimaginative person.
Tanukitsune Posted February 9, 2011 Everybody is a loser to someone else... I personally despise "alpha males" so much to the point of misandry... It's strange how watching 10 hours of TV a week is "normal", but spending 10 playing games makes you a loser... Uggg... I feel like I'm covered in sexism and testosterone just looking at that book cover... I need a bath of puppies, rainbows and unicorns now.. (I told you I despise "alpha males"!) Armchair General Posted February 9, 2011 His jealousy is palpable. Humble are we that have not contributed and 'done' something with our lives. All blog writers are plebs, that's my generalisation right back'atcha.
syntheticgerbil Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) Anyone who uses the term "alpha male" with any kind of seriousness (unless they are actually talking about wolves or something) has automatically dug themself into a hole as a helplessly old-fashioned, likely sexist idiot. After seeing the term "alpha male rant" I'm kind of curious as to why you'd bother to continue reading in the first place. Haha, that's how I feel Miffy, especially two fold if the guy is trying to sell guides based on him being an Alpha Male. Funny thing is, I bet none of these guys come off as alpha in actual society (maybe a douche at the most) but that the internet propagates these types hide behind the anonymity to sell books to the desperate as there is nothing to be shattered. I get the feeling a real true "alpha male" would never waste time writing a guide on how to be top dog. It's just unbecoming. Anyway, what's obnoxious about this guy is he is after video gaming because of the pretense that everything a man spends his time on must contribute to society. It seems at the core he is proposing we be career driven all day in order to be of worth. I doubt this guy works 14 hour days every day a week only taking time to sleep. I would also venture he's of the type to spend at least 8 hours a week watching sports on some crap satellite setup. Also bible quotes FTW! And now I've devoted way too much attention and thought to a dolt that thinks every man in the world should be one way while all others who dare shoot their semen without his approval should be ashamed. What is really pathetic is he has defined who he is by his obsession with divisive thoughts like that. Edited February 9, 2011 by syntheticgerbil

ThunderPeel2001 Posted February 11, 2011 Damn. Well, he decided against publishing my stinging, damning rebuttal. No doubt he was brought to alpha-male tears at my many crushing points. Well, maybe not. I tried to point out: 1. We're the first generation of folks who grew up with games, that's why there's no-one older than us playing them -- this will change as we grow older. 2. Female gaming is on the increase -- are these women losers, too? 3. It's certainly not any more childish than watching sports ("My team lost the match... *cries*") or hell, playing sports. Going to the gym -- sure, that makes sense -- but organised sports? Why do you need to kick a ball around with other men? It's no more "mature" than gaming. Considering the posts he did decide to publish... I doubt that any of these guys have girlfriends anyway. Is there really women attracted to this type of guy? I’m guessing for both the men (and the women that date them) it’s a question of self-esteem. I think there is probably a direct correlation between guys who play these games more than 5 hours a week and very poor people skills.A guy that I work with plays an online game called Warcraft. He has his own ‘nickname’ and talks with the other guys in our office about things he wins, tools he buys, etc., and it is all referring to this ‘online world’ where he is king. I feel very sad for him. I think mine deserved a response.

ThunderPeel2001 Posted February 11, 2011 Well to be fair, he's not published a comment in some time, so he may have not wanted to start a new discussion. And he DID publish one pro-gamer comment.

DanJW Posted February 11, 2011 He probably thinks reading books is childish too. Retaliatory generalisation: So called alpha-males are soulless, uncreative, close-minded, bigoted, hate-mongering, unintelligent, afraid-of-what-they-don't-understand, chauvenist, girl-friend-beating, outdated, thankfully dying-out dinosaurs of a bygone age that will not be missed.
