Nintendo 3DS

Recommended Posts

Am I right in thinking with an October release in Japan this will be just in time for Monster Hunter 4G? I'm almost certainly going to import one, I've nearly bought a Japanese model a few times and this will likely break my resolve.

I've also read some speculation that the added stick, buttons and NFC capability make this the equal of the Wii U gamepad, be interesting to if they take advantage of this to release a cheaper model of the home console or have them interact in some way.

The should call is the 3D-DS2. That will solve all the naming problems.

They can call them the New Super 3DS Bros.

That content filter for the web browser just goes to show that Nintendo are the dumbest and worst at implementing internet functionality. They really need to get on board with that crap because they get more criticism for it than they get praise.

What I want to know is if the browser is an actual browser, not whatever program they have in place that deconstructs pages into images.

I'm pretty sure the browser is a full webkit-based browser. I don't know if it's based on any particular end-user browser like Chrome, Safari or Opera, though.

I heard elsewhere that it'll support HTML5 which means I can play NP2 from my 3DS. Potentially.

It bugs me that now I'll have to buy a new microSD card and find a use for the SD card I'm currently using for my 3DS. At least memory prices are going down, but I don't know if I even have any use for a 32GB SD card now.

Such is technology. The old eventually loses worth. In the short term though it could operate as backup maybe, if you have something that takes SD and micro SD cards.

I'm playing Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All, Puzzles For Some: I can't believe this took two fucking years to localize.

This is pretty good so far! I'm only about an hour in so not much has happened yet, but I'm really appreciating the presentation of it all. I get the worrying feeling that this is gonna go in very stupid directions since there seems to be straight-up magic involved though.

Also, I don't like Luke's new VA.

I'm pretty sure Luke's 'new' VA is the one they've been using in Europe since the first game, who can actually do a kid voice instead of the raid siren they use in NA.

I'm really curious to find out what people think of this, particularly a friend of mine who ragequit AA5 because you were forced to out a trans girl.

It's funny, I always have liked the North American Luke since that's who I know and I've always just kind of found him lovably annoying. But I don't mind the European voice actor. One of the earlier games you could unlock the voice over comparisons with enough picarats if I recall, since I think a few others were switched for the continents as well.

Thinking about getting a 2DS for my step-daughter, because it's absurdly cheap, and I want to play Super Mario 3D Land (my girlfriend asks if I'm really buying it for myself. No comment.)

Got a few questions though, which have probably been answered in this thread already but it is a really long thread.

1) Can I download and play SNES titles from the nintendo eshop?

2) Does the mono speaker sound okay? If I plug earphones in, could I get stereo sound, or is that unpossible. Bit of a noob question, sorry

3) Is it really tough to break? Step-daughter is fairly careful but I don't trust her not to stand on it at some point

Thank you!

Re #1 -

No, the 3DS doesn't support SNES Virtual Console games yet. Here's a list of what's supported, but it's basically all NES/GB-generation games - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_games_for_Nintendo_3DS_(North_America)

Re #3 -

From what I know, the point most vulnerable to break on Nintendo's handhelds has been the hinge since the GBA SP. I have no personal experience with the 2DS, but I'd hazard to guess that lacking a hinge would make it very comparatively resilient.

I'd be amazed if the sound through headphones wasn't stereo. I know it was on that cheap PSP model that only had one speaker and I wouldn't be surprised if a monaural headphone socket was actually more expensive to buy these days.

Re #2 -

I didn't even know the 2DS sound was in mono. From a quick google, it states that plugging in headphones puts it in stereo.

Re #3 -

It's a nicely sturdy piece of kit. I think that the screens are the most prone thing to break, especially the bottom touch screen, which didn't feel like it was especially reinforced. I think it also comes with a case (or you can buy a case for cheap) which is a good shock absorber. certainly my 3DS XL has been dropped down one too many staircases in it's lifetime and it's survived. The biggest annoyance is that dropping it can sometimes cause the SD card to pop out, and I lose progress on my game (80% of all my games are played on the SD card for me nowadays). The 2DS will survive being stepped on I think.

Considering the incredible leaps of logic the Layton games take to explain away "magic," they sure are predictable. Spoilers for Layton vs Wright:

I only just met Eve the cat a few in-game sentences ago. How long are they going to pretend that Eve, Mrs. Darklaw, the hooded woman in the cart, the woman at the Storyteller's appearance, and the witch aren't all the same person? (or in Eve's case, at least related in some way)

It's also an Ace Attorney game, and you've got nothing on her even once the characters acknowledge that boy howdy Mrs. Darklaw sure sounds suspicious.

I have to imagine that this is related to the Swapnote shutdown (RIP Nikki) and the end of Flipnote Gallery: Friends; with the idea being Nintendo wanting to be able to claim less responsibility when some kid inevitably sees someone's dong and parents never ever bothering to turn on parental controls.

The scenario I keep imagining goes like this:

Kid: Hey mom, can I buy this Pokémon game?

Mom: Sure son.  Use my credit card.

Kid: Thanks mom.  *uses card to unlock porn*

The dumbest thing about it all is it's not like the kids won't have internet access elsewhere. Not to mention the rampant hot hot sexting.

It's not about actual prevention (because you can't prevent it); it's about making enough of a token effort to be able to legally claim no liability.

I think you guys are being too cynical about the internet filter thing.  Keeping your kids away from the seedier parts of the internet is something many parents would still like to do.  The alternative would just be to remove web access entirely.  I don't think content controls, even if they default to "on" and require a token credit card charge to remove, are particularly onerous.

I agree, in case it wasn't clear. I just don't expect it to work most of the time.
