Anybody Played...?

Ah, it's kind of like the helicopters in GTA games, or... G-Police! Once you're brain is used to the controls, it feels effortless.

Waaa. I found my G-Police disk the other day. I think we got it with a Voodoo 2 or something. Is it worth a boot up?:)

I used to love it, and again, only played it on PS1. I suspect time might not have been kind to it.

So I have one of the early Gameboy bricks (with a clear casing so you can watch the magic happen) and found out the scree is crap. I owned a GBA for a few weeks (for which I bought Deja VU I & II) until my sister broke it and never replaced it. Since I was hankering for some GB action and still owned a bunch of cartridges, I ordered a GBA online and was wondering if anyone could recommend some GBA titles I may have missed out on.

Is it just me or has the state of enemy AI (at least in shooters) really taken a back seat lately? I know in terms of other game genres (like strategy) it's advanced so maybe it's just not as explicit to my eyed but i still think that the squad behavior in Half-Life was the pinnacle, using grenades and flanking maneuvers to pressure. me. now dudes basically just pop up and shoot, throw a grenade randomly, and try to hide from your line of sight when you shoot back.

I got the Descents off GOG fairly recently, and when I played the same thought occurred to me.

But when I think of AI Descent stands above even Half-Life. While I have no doubt that Half-Life's AI is more sophisticated, the Descent series's AI created a wider variety of experiences. For one thing I cannot think of a single game before or since in which enemies could stage unscripted sneak attacks at any time.

It seems to me that the reason we don't see more stuff like this is that FPSs have gotten more linear, with enemies scripted to pop out at certain points along the way. While in Descent the ability of certain enemies to freely navigate the level gave them an opportunity to really surprise you.

I really enjoyed it when I played it for the PS1, but I highly suspect that it has not have aged well.

Whispered World?

It looks awesome, but the problem is that I'm absolutely awful at point-and-click adventure games. From the trailer it looked like it had some puzzles in it as well, like Broken Sword or something.

Risen on the X360 is actually okay, but you would be better off with divinity 2 if you are playing it on console.

How is Mafia? I was thinking about picking it up at some point (especially to contrast with recent open world games).

Also; G-Police, I had a go again a few years ago and one thing - it was bloody hard, I never got far (all those years ago) originally on the PC. Escort mission after escort mission tries my patience I recall :) (It was reasonably fun just a shame I never got far).

If i remember correctly, Mafia was pretty fun. However that's been the only game where i had zero interest in doing any of that open world exploration stuff, thanks to the period cars' handling and gas mechanic and the fact that practically all missions start from the same spot.

Mafia 2 looks pretty sweet though so i'd recommend at least trying it out to gear yourself up for the sequel.

100% agree. Plus (if I recall correctly) there was nothing to do in the city - no side missions, no stats, no money, no stores, nothing.

Also.... for some reason the draw distance in that game really bothered me.

Mafia is one of my favorite video games. I really liked the city and the countryside and the fact that you can barely get on top of a hill with some of the more modest cars and that you can get a ticket from speeding or not stopping at red light.

Like it has already been said, it's unlike most open world games, however. There isn't any "in between missions" time in the story mode and the freeride-section doesn't offer anything interesting to do.

I can still heartily recommend that game if you like good games.

I quite liked the difficulty curve on it, though for some reason the escort missions never got to me (they usually do). The last mission was insane, IIRC, suddenly spiking to a

massive dogfight between all sorts of air vehicles in waves, ground targets in warehouses too I think.

I'm curious about this too. I noticed it on sale on steam the other day and was seriously considering picking it up. I know people had commented on the voice acting and animation quality some time ago, but from the trailers it looked ok-ish to me.

Swords & Soldiers? Simon Parkin makes it sound awesome and I'm in love with the art style.

Half-Life's AI is pretty much all scripted, that is, not much of an AI. They depend on their specific situation in the game. Works for Half-Life. That might be why AI seems worse now. It's a whole lot harder to do for open world stuff where you can't script it separately for each gunfight.

it's a 2D RTS designed for wiiware by the guys who designed the freeware version of de Blob (the de Blob IP was bought from them and turned into a full retail Wii game by a different studio).

Yeah, can't think of any I've played besides Thief and Arcanum (and I din't play that one much). Too bad the wots-its-name game that was developed by an aussie studio got put on hold.

Edit: RE: the topic of the thread: I'm always quite thrilled when I see Amiga screenshots and videos and such...I've got an Amiga fetish without having ever seen or touched an Amiga. I don't really want to try and track down/buy one (at least not at this point) so what should I do? Are there any good remakes or books (like the big anthology someone published about ZX Spectrum games) or emulators or games that were made for that system which are now freeware that I could check out to get the Amiga experience? Is the Amiga as awesome as it appears to be?

I know I said the thread was about specific games but I figure this is obscure enough that it's not a general recommendations request and I don't want to clutter things up with another thread that probably wouldn't get a lot of responses.

I can offer no help with emulators I'm afraid, and though I can't speak to whether or not the appeal remains strong today, at the time, the Amiga was extremely awesome.

The Amiga was the best games machine in it's time. When you look at the dictionary for the word awesome, there's a picture of Commodore Amiga there. :yep:

Anybody played the Autumn Moon's Ghost Pirates of Vooju yet? Seems to be available as a digital purchase now. The visuals, especially the backgrounds, look pretty great, at least, and it looks like it could be a fun little adventure game.

I am interested in playing this, and I didn't realize they had a digital version out, but I might hold off for now just because of the huge backlog of other stuff I have right now. Interested to hear if anyone else has played it though. I love what I've seen of the art.
