Idle Thumbs 45: Episode Forty-Five

Recommended Posts

totally agree w/ the craptastic direction Bioware has been in marketing their games... but I'd still play/buy ME2 :X

since the mailbag is heavily screened, what's the chances of actually getting an email through?

It's fairly random, but be concise. Sometimes people ask good questions in emails many paragraphs in length, but that's rarely practical to read. It's pretty much always possible to edit down to fewer words (I realize I'm not the best model of that on the podcast).

Same goes for 55-Wizard-ON, to an even greater degree. We get a lot of three-minute voice mails, and there's just no way we're going to have a straight-up recording that long.

While Idle Thumbs is always dense with hilarity, I think Jake's "We only had the guts to mo-cap sex one time!" in cracked teenager voice is probably the first time I've actually had to pause the podcast to compose myself.

I had a really similar experience to Chris in Odious Tea with the hunters, and the whole thing played out in a really nifty action-horror movie way. I had no idea they could even fit into the building doorways so I thought I'd be safe inside until I turned around once and was literally face-to-face with one. So I panicked and did the stupid horror movie thing and reflexively ran upstairs. Only I didn't have an escape window but rather found myself in a small room that luckily had a shotgun and some flame grenades in it. So I was pretty much forced to throw down with the fucker in this dark, confined space where my primary light sources were muzzle flashes and the glowy bits on the hunter. It was one of the most intense and frankly kinda spooky moments I've ever had in a Halo game.

Fortunately I won and the room was covered in it's weird orange blood afterward.

I have to do a second run through of Odious tea, with my save file no existing anymore, legendary seems like the best option.

Avoiding in-jokes is probably helpful too; I'd assume there's only so many times Chris wants to say "wizard."

If he gets tired of saying "WIZAAAAAAAAAAAARD!" the show will not be the same.

The last bit was awesome, funny as hell.

The rest was good too

That's interesting you mention that. I didn't notice it when I actually saw the trailer for the first time, but when they overlaid sound clips from the trailer into the episode, I almost thought they were adding in made up sound effects that they just did themselves, but convinced myself otherwise.

I thought the exact the same thing. Maybe Bioware are just trying to make things easy for this guy:

That mod is interesting and amusing for a while, but some of the sounds don't quite fit with what they're trying to emulate or are just too loud. I got annoyed with the footstep sounds before the video was even over.

That's why I love youtube, as you no longer have to tediously install mods/maps (c:\program files\valve\half-life\maps, create server running map) just to check em out, you can just get the gist from an online streaming internet video on the world wide web of computers.

I feel bad because Dave Gilbert's games have been on my list of "to-play-games-when-I-finish-the-games-I-have list" for a couple of years.

I'm sorry, Mr. Gilbert.

I went to Wadjet Eye back when Emerald City Confidential came out. I was disappointed to discover that it wouldn't run using Wine, and assumed the rest of the games wouldn't either. I decided to them yesterday, and it turns out it was a completely off base assumption, so I got them all. I'm really looking forward to playing them. Unfortunately, I just got a sweet new work computer today, so I'm torn between playing some adventure games or with my new computer. Sometimes life is such a biotic bitch.

Oh, and until yesterday I confused Dave Gilbert with Dave Grossman... Maybe because his name is a fusion of Grossman's and Ron Gilbert's?

I found the following in the city.

"Boost" the chocolate bar

"Boost" the energy drink

"Scoops" the ice cream store

I'm coming close to having the weirdest meal of my life.

Pictures forthcoming

Mix them all together for a Hot Scoops Float.

Boost was my favorite candy bar while I was in Australia, They're essentially Twix, but in a single bar instead of two.

I don't know about Australia, but in the UK they're very different to Twix. Little biscuit balls wrapped in a caramel tube coated in chocolate is an approximate description. I go through phases of loving them and having to eat them frequently to not eating them for a couple of years.

The main reason I never mentioned it to you guys (Chris, Jake, Nick) is that I had no idea it didn't exist in the states. It's a fairly common Cadbury's bar and I know Cadbury's has some kind of presence in the US, although the exported versions taste weird.

The talk of Bioware's new direction in obnoxious trailers reminded me of the RPS community's awesome improvement of the Dragon Age "new shit" trailer:

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yTVjUY9wMg&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yTVjUY9wMg&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

Holy shit, it's like "scoop" and "boost" are common English words!
