Dosed Posted September 25, 2016 Anyone been listening to The Adventure Zone recently? I can't believe the next one will most likely be the last arc! Although I imagine it will last another year or so due to the release schedule and the fact Griffin and Travis have babies on the way. Also has anyone contributed to The Adventure Zine. I was thinking about doing it today especially considering it's the last day today! What did you guys think about the choices the three characters had to make during the flashback scene? I knew none of them would take it but Merle's choice was easily the most boring. Travis' on the other hand was really interesting and I felt quite sad for him. I'm really impressed with how wacky they've managed to go with this thing and just sort of not try to explain any of it.

I'm really impressed with how wacky they've managed to go with this thing and just sort of not try to explain any of it. This latest arc has been very strong - I think they handled the change from a more action-orientated situation to a more discussion based one well, and I felt Griffin led them through it pretty well (although this comes from someone who's never really played D&D so I don't know if that's actually true!). I'm looking forward to the resolution of the various threads that are hanging around. I think it should be heading towards a pretty interesting conclusion. I agree, Merle's choice was definitely the most boring. I can't remember if they said in the show or if I saw it on Twitter, but I think Travis was the only one to put in some time creating a backstory before starting the initial campaign, which would explain why his choice was the most meaningful. Equally I think it shows Clint's relative inexperience when it comes to D&D! I've started listening to Friends at the Table recently (at the beginning of the most recent arc/campaign) and it's a very different beast to TAZ - less goofy, but with a better realised world. As a D&D/roleplaying novice, the contrasts are pretty interesting.
Dosed Posted September 25, 2016 I think the thing just keeps getting better and better the more it goes on. This arc was really interesting and I can't wait to find out what all this red cloak stuff is about? The last episode really threw me. I'll put it in a spoiler in case you haven't read it: I wonder why the hell Magnus is the red cloak?! I love how there's all these little things which have been teased and hinted at but I don't want to spend any time figuring them out. I'll just wait until they tell me them. You got any theories? I started listening to Friends at the Table a while ago and I just found they spend way too long making decisions. At least in the early episodes of the cyber punk one anyway. Maybe I'll give it a go again some time soon, but I remember being frustrated by how much they took their time.
tberton Posted September 25, 2016 Re: Friends at the Table, you should know that around episode 10 of Counter/Weight (the cyberpunk arc) they switch to a different game (keeping the same characters and setting). They're more comfortable with that one, so things move a bit faster. That said, the decisions are never automatic, but personally, I like hearing the gears turn in the players minds, because making decisions on the fly is the fun of roleplaying games. SuperBiasedMan Posted September 25, 2016 They specifically also switched games because the players had trouble figuring out what to do. Their most recent series called Marielda could be worth trying out, since they seem pretty comfortable with that system from early on.

As a D&D/roleplaying novice, the contrasts are pretty interesting. I've found it really interesting to listen to FatT and TAZ in parallel since I know that Griffin and Austin both listen to each other's shows and it feels like you can seem them influencing each other from time to time. Specifically, I think the last couple episodes of the latest TAZ arc feel like FatT scenarios. Also Griffin has picked up Austin's tic of describing a terrible situation the characters have found themselves in, followed with, "What do you do?"
SuperBiasedMan Posted September 26, 2016 What's funny is, the "What do you do?" thing is a specific piece of advice from the Dungeon World book that Austin clearly latched onto as a good framing. Having listened to all of the show and then reading through the book, I could see parts that Austin either already identified with or actively picked up from the book as good ideas. It made me extra excited to run the game.
Dewar Posted September 26, 2016 Regarding TAZ Choices: I wonder if they had a plan for if someone decided to say yes, or any pre-discussion at all about how that section was going to go. As a player, I would have been very tempted to save Phandalin, but also wouldn't want to be contrary and derail the whole game because of a choice like that. It's a really useful tool to remind yourself that the thing that matters is the players action - as the GM all you're doing is describing things to give players context, inspiration and pressure for their actions. Also as a functional phrase, it's like saying "over" on a walkie talkie so the players know it's their time to step in. Also Austin's new (currently unnamed) Vice gaming cast has started. It's him and Patrick, twice weekly. No proper feed yet but an episode is up: https://vicegamingsnewpodcast.simplecast.fm/

SuperBiasedMan Posted October 27, 2016 For anyone interested, I found a website that can turn youtube channels/playlists/groups into podcast feeds. You just get the URL you want and it returns you one reformatted into an RSS page: http://podsync.net I don't know how it works with ads yet, I sent them an email to ask. It may lead to not generating ad revenue for the youtubers, but I'm hoping it magically still does.
TheLastBaron Posted October 27, 2016 Oh wow thanks! A podcast I listen to is recorded each week's as a YouTube stream, but the new episodes haven't been getting posted into the podcast feed since March so I end up having to listen to the episodes on YouTube. This is super handy.

Bjorn Posted November 1, 2016 If you like awkward humor, Mortified might be enjoyable. It's grown ass adults reading excerpts of their teenage diaries live to audiences. I listened to an episode of it today because it was featured on the Heart podcast, and it was terrific. Normally I don't like humor built around awkwardness, but this was oddly delightful because it was people reveling in the absurdness of what it is to be a teen, and it's real, versus the manufactured awkwardness of a sitcom or Ben Stiller movie. Cordeos Posted November 18, 2016 I am doing some post-election purging of my podcasts both political and otherwise. I really want to replace the Vergecast with another podcast because I don't like them as a media company. Anyone know of a good product focused technology podcast? I really dislike FatT. the first episode was 3 hours of them piddling around asking if they can see each others cursors and generally being dull af. i do really recommend the glass cannon podcast for some excellent and riveting dnd. even though it's path finder

SuperBiasedMan Posted November 19, 2016 More specifically, when they start a new game in season 2 they cut way down on table talk and focus on playing the game. I personally miss the extra banter
