I've been listening to lots of Desert Island Disks recently and loving it. The host is amazing. She guides things so well and seems perfectly able to pitch herself to her guest's personality.

Speaking with the US ambassador to the UK:

"Well, i can see why you are a diplomat with that answer"

"I'm not sure that was a compliment"

"It wasn't!" (everyone laughs).

Unsurprisingly I love Desert Island Discs and it was a big inspiration for Checkpoints. It's such an institution in the UK I forget that people in America might not be familiar with the format, but it's such a neat way to get an insight into somebodies life.

I was much less strict with the rules in Checkpoints partly because I didn't want to give guests homework before they came on the show, and also because I think video games work differently to music in this context. Once you start going down the route of choosing specific games it becomes more of a puzzle of which games do you want to last forever, whereas I was much more interested in the human relationship with games and how they hit at certain points of your life. Even garbage games can be meaningful if they catch you in the right moment. I'm no Kirsty Young yet but I'm doing my best.

Anyway, Checkpoints #45 is up. Hey look, it's Chris Remo! - declandineen.com/checkpoints

Has anyone listened to Science vs.?

I heard a sample while listening to Reply: All and while I liked the idea, I think I prefer the drier delivery of Brian Dunning from Skeptoid, rather than the clearly superior host and journalism of Science vs.

Maybe it's because Skeptoid was like the first podcast I ever listened to.

I listened to the fracking episode, and it's funny but I found it a bit too dry. The more jokey/casual stuff felt very forced and scripted, a lot like another Gimlet show, Surprisingly Awesome. I'm also a little wary of the show straying from just being informative about aspects of a complex issue into making 'objective, scientific' conclusions on things. I didn't want to come out of it with my mind made up on whether fracking is good or bad, I just wanted to know more about the process and I can make up my own mind from that.

I haven't dropped it, but down the line I'll try out episode 4/5 and see if the show is finding its feet at that point.

Belter of a Checkpoints this week with Ellie Gibson, formerly of Eurogamer, now one half of Scummy Mummies and soon to be seen in a new Video game TV show (in the UK, sorry) Dara O'Briain's Go 8 Bit. Probably the most I've ever laughed in an episode.

All the iTunes, RSS links etc are here: declandineen.com/checkpoints

Thanks!

declan, I have to ask you if the William Pugh interview felt as awkward towards the end as it sounded. I can't decide if it just went off-rails or if it was partly planned from the beginning.

Haha! It wasn't awkward at all. We kind of planned to go off rails?

When we were setting it up I suggested the idea that we weave a bunch of fake games into the episode. It fits his playful artistic style and since we were first introduced when I offered to help him prank some of his friends it felt appropriate. I was quite nervous because I went in to it knowing we were going to be improvising a bunch of things and I wasn't so sure of my skills to keep up with him but I think it turned out OK. There are definitely moments where no matter what I was doing or planning William was going to do William things but I was totally happy with that.

I actually have a special episode coming up about the relationship between acting and role playing games and I spoke to William again. Even that short clip veers very quickly from genuine insight to wild chaos and back again. I think he's excellent.

Thanks for listening!

I am now able to listen to My Brother, My Brother, and Me, Adventure Zone, and Cool Games Inc. while having a walk without looking like a grinning idiot most of the time. Not so with My Dad Wrote a Porno! I recommend giving it a try if you are interested in three friends reading and commenting on a very graphic (and bad) piece of erotica written by the father of one of them, but perhaps not while walking downtown...

Declan, the episode with Ellie Gibson was great. Can't believe you've never heard of Loot, though! I'm feeling quite ill at the moment (not related to hearing your podcast) but I'll post more thoughts when I'm back to normal.

Thanks for listening, glad you liked it. Hopefully the TV show will be good. I'm speaking to the guys who made it this week so that episode will be out soon.

Jason Fagone recently started a podcast discussing the freelance writing business from a writer's perspective, titled Kill Fee. I've enjoyed the first two episodes quite a bit.

Just listened to an episode of Left Out on the major problems with private philanthropy. Mostly how it focuses on effects not causes and often funnel money into privatization efforts. There are also issues with transparency and charities using the tax free benefits to give money to other corporations. The Gates foundation recently funded a MasterCard effort to expand into Africa under the guise of charity. Its all really weird.

New episode of Checkpoints is out and my guest is Steve McNeil, one of the co-creators of Go 8 Bit which starts on Dave tonight at 10pm. (Dave is a TV channel in the UK for the confused Americans.)

It's a great show too, it's been rechristened Dara O'Briain's Go 8 Bit since Dara is hosting, but Steve and Sam are the team captains who team up with celebrities and play video games. It's a good show, and it was super interesting to hear Steve talk about the challenge of translating the show from the stage to TV.

I just learned about Mystery Show by Starlee Kine it's pretty neat.

https://gimletmedia.com/show/mystery-show/

edit: and I am through all of the existing episodes and a second season can't come soon enough IMO.

To give some more context, it's very TAL-like (no surprise as she's been a contributor/producer for them) and take the premise with a grain of salt...the mystery is there, but often as not the best bits are the totally red-herring side stories that come up as she strikes up conversation with various interviewees. Also I would characterize her as twee if that's a thing that bothers you; personally I find twee stuff hit or miss but mystery show doesn't fall into the category I find annoying.

Thank you!

The show is great.

Jake Gyllenhaal might be the nicest person.

Anyone know of podcasts in a conversational format (maybe about computer-games) that is in Korean?

Checkpoints is fifty (!) episodes old today. I celebrated by releasing an episode with Bennett Foddy - the creator of QWOP, philosopher, professor and some time bass player in Cut Copy - and launching a Patreon.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to this community especially for being supportive of the show and putting up with my links. I know it's not a huge milestone, but I wasn't sure if I'd make it to five, let alone fifty. Sincerely, if you've checked out the show, thanks so much for listening.

Finally gotten onto Two Dope Queens and oh its soo good.

Starting to check out Harmontown but at a length of over two hours I'm not sure if I'll be a regular listener. I really prefer shorter podcasts.

More than a year ago I dropped the Co-Optional podcast during all the GG nonsense, but now I'm hearing people talking about guesting on it that aren't in the typical TB demographic (Danny O'Dwyer being the most recent.) Is anyone still listening? Is it worth it?
