Merus Posted November 16, 2013 I didn't have much of problem with Cecil's voice other than when he's reading alarming advertisements and doing a scary voice. He's clearly reading everything he's told to, including the supposedly conversational asides. I'd prefer a more natural voice, one that doesn't sound like they grabbed the least worst talent in Night Vale, but it's okay.
Twig Posted November 16, 2013 I love the way he talks. It's the best.
Brannigan Posted November 16, 2013 I think that's kind of the point, a community radio station isn't going to have top notch. That and I guess the story reason that he was chosen as a child to be the host.
Patrick R Posted November 17, 2013 Community radio station hosts do not sound like Christopher Walken on Halloween, generally.
Brannigan Posted November 17, 2013 Would a community radio station host raised in an unspeakable horror town sound weird? Well ok, given what I said he should probably sound like a gibbering madman. Had no idea this would be so divisive. I like it! To each their own I suppose. I hate you all and you smell like doodoo.
Patrick R Posted November 17, 2013 I understand the choice, I just think it's a poor one. The whole comic premise of the show is that he delivers surreal and alarming news as if it didn't occur to him that it's surreal and alarming. The humor comes largely from the juxtaposition. The G-Man voice hurts that.
Merus Posted November 18, 2013 I think there is something to be said for Cecil not realising that he's sounding weird on the radio, but that might be one step too far. I largely agree the show'd be stronger with a more conventional radio voice. A blogger I read mentioned Cecil sounded to him like an audiobook reader; enunciating every word clearly, trading natural flow for clarity.
Twig Posted November 18, 2013 The problem with the idea of Cecil not realizing everything is surreal is alarming is that he clearly does, when that stuff affects him, personally. He freaks out pretty frequently, despite clearly trying not to. Most recently that business with the tape he recorded as a kid. I guess if you don't like the idea of him actually being aware that everything's fucked, but pretending it's not, then well that sucks for you. I love it. I would love it less if he didn't speak in this manner. (I would probably still love it, anyway, as long as he didn't turn into a gibbering mess of a human being. That'd completely ruin it for me.) WHOA SHIT unfortunate typo
Patrick R Posted November 18, 2013 I guess there may be more dimensions to him in episodes other than the six I heard, but in those six I've never heard him freak out.
Twig Posted November 18, 2013 Yeah I don't think it happened much in the earlier episodes, to be fair! And I guess I'm exaggerating a bit when I say "frequently". I mostly just meant, "more frequently than I expected".
Brannigan Posted November 18, 2013 The Cassette is probably the biggest freak out. He got weirded out a bit in Sandstorm too. All the Carlos stuff is him being all gooey and emotional. The Faceless Old Woman is my favorite still in terms of voice, and voiced by this young lady: Then again I guess there's really only been like 5 voices on the show. clyde Posted December 27, 2013 I think I would love a podcast where people who don't play many games are escorted into a Gamestop or onto the Steam page and then choose two or three games to play, play them for a month, and then get together and talk about them. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think I would eat that shit up. I listen to Gameological in Stereo specify for Bonnie Teti's reviews. Conan O'Brien is a bit too celebrity for me though; he's been assimilated. Dosed Posted January 10, 2014 I know this isn't strictly the right topic but I didn't want to make a whole new thread for it. I've been watching a lot of AVGN videos recently before I go to sleep. They're normally a pretty good length, like 10-15 minutes, and I mainly just watch them to see how truly awful some of these games can be. I don't think he's got a particularly interesting or funny presenting style, and his constant mention with feces must be indicative of a psychological obsession with the stuff, but I do love watching stuff about obscure games/accessories/consoles. However, I'm pretty sick of them now. Does anybody know of any sort of video series with similar running time focused on video games? I've watched Ego Raptor's Sequilitis and thought it was incredibly interesting, but he seems pretty determined to never make any more of them. Also, the Escapist's videos are way too short and I really only watch Yahtzee and Movie Bob. Back on topic: Did anybody else listen to Giantbomb's award show episodes? I nearly stopped listen (and in fact did on a few occasions) due to some of the stuff Brad Shoemaker was saying. That guy is so pedantic I did some actual, real life, honest to god eye rolling at some of his arguments.
JonCole Posted January 10, 2014 Could you give an example of his pedantry? The only time I got annoyed with him was his insistence that DOTA deserved to be so high on the ultimate GOTY award despite him being the only one who actually played it.
Justin Leego Posted January 10, 2014 Dosed, you might find cleansing. (The other videos tend to be around 10 minutes long as well so may fit the bill. As long as you don't mind the sign-off line...)
Dosed Posted January 10, 2014 Jon, not specifically right now. Just in the GOTY episodes he just sends a lot of redundant stuff and seems to argue over pointless stuff. I know it's not a great way of explaining myself, but it's been a while. It's not just in those episodes though, I've heard it in other episodes too. I'm still yet to finish that series of episodes so if I hear anything I'll be sure to quote it here so I don't sound like a whiney dickhead with no examples. Justin, I've just checked out a couple minutes of that video and it seems interesting. I'll try it out before I sleep and let you know if it worked as the night cap I'm looking for. Dosed Posted January 16, 2014 I've checked out some of the Game Theory videos and some of them are pretty interesting. They do get pretty damn obscure sometimes though, like even too much for me. The narrator's voice is a killer for me sometimes. He seems to flit between Don Hertzfeldt levels of droning-American-deadpan-soullessness and comically-over-the-top-commercial-voice-over-long-vowel-American They're filling the void for now, but if anyone else has any other suggestions that'd be awesome. clyde Posted February 3, 2014 It's not really a podcast, but I've discovered this source of audio that I'm enjoying having on. It's comforting or something.
SilentBtAmazing Posted February 4, 2014 Anyone else think the Giant Bombcasts have been really bad lately? Anyway folks have mentioned Rebel FM and the Not A Game podcast in passing in other threads and I enjoy both of those very much now.
Twig Posted February 4, 2014 I've probably already said this before in this thread (because I take almost every opportunity presented to do so), but god I cannot stand Rebel FM because of one of its main hosts. He's always got this totally smug attitude about anything shitty in gaming. "Well, you're doing it to yourself, gamers!" I just fucking hate his smug ass fuck. Okay sorry. He's probably a fine person in real life.
Niyeaux Posted February 10, 2014 ^I like how everyone who has ever heard that podcast can tell you're talking about Arthur without you even saying it.
Twig Posted February 10, 2014 You can't hear it but I giggled at that. It's true. D:
JonCole Posted February 10, 2014 I've been listening to Ice T's podcast. It's... a fucking surreal trip, listening to one of the most hardcore rappers ever do ads for SquareSpace and Audible, or talk about why he thinks that calling someone "gay" as an insult makes sense to him (I don't agree with him, but just... listening to what he's saying is oddly entertaining). http://www.icetfinallevel.com/
tomobedlam Posted February 13, 2014 I listened to one episode of Rebel FM, you know who started talking shit and stupid things about shadow warrior (the new one) and i haven´t come back, lately i´ve been enjoying the board gaming podcasts in quarter to three, and the new podcast of jeff cannata, and christian spicer
sclpls Posted February 13, 2014 Tom Chick's interview with Martin Wallace on Qt3 was really good!
