LOL

@Orvidos no, my rating system has 3 options:  (must play), :tmeh: (playable), (skip it). It's not a binary system. I'm unable to properly quantify game quality to justify a more fine grained rating system, just read the text that came with the directional thumb.

Haven't been updating this, but I think since last writing, I have beaten Prince of Persia 2008 (and epilogue), The Gunstringer (Finally got an Xbox 360), and Rayman 3DS. I should probably write somewhere else about all of these, so I will do so soon.

The Gunstringer

Did you play the free DLC FMV shooter (produced by Troma)? It looked hilarious!

So far I have just beaten the main game, I do have the DLC downloaded, I should get to it soon. I was fortunate enough to get the game for free because my boss' fiancee works at Twisted Pixel, so it's basically my first Kinect game.

I'm guessing the DLC will feel like Mad Dog McCree, which should be awesome in it's own awkward way.

Gunstringer sounds so good! I wish I had room for Kinect.

I beat Solatorobo and it's pretty awesome... It's puppies in mechs and sky pirate kittens! :woohoo:

Actually I also don't have room most Kinect things (at least going by the basic menu tuner stuff telling you to stand around the living room). So the awesome thing about Gunstringer is that it doesn't require a floor or a ceiling, it just reads your right and left arms and that's it. You actually stand closer to it than most games I would imagine. Talking to the Twisted Pixel employee, he says this is done on purpose because they felt Kinect is somewhat broken by default and they did a lot of designing around its faults.

Oh nice. I've had it for a while but was worried it would end up playing similarly to Child Of Eden, which is great in concept but keeps losing me because if I'm not standing on my couch I'm too close to the Kinect. If I can just be sitting on my couch playing, I should throw that in the 360.

Blew the dust off of the PS3 and played through Resistance 3 over the last couple of weeks.

Favourite game of 2011? I think so!

There's something about it that just screams Half Life to me and given that the Half Life series is one of my favourite series of all time, it felt right at home to me.

Any other recommendations for recent games similar to Half Life? I heard Singularity was pretty nifty so I picked that up cheap.

You'll probably really like Singularity, that game has a very distinct Half-Life vibe, kind of Half-Life x BioShock. Really cool game, sadly overlooked by most people.

What specifically about Half-Life do you find appealing? (To help narrow down some suggestions.)

Though right now, I'm just going to go ahead and say that you'd probably also really like Alan Wake. It's currently 360 only, but coming to the PC soon.

Finally played Oddworld Stranger's Wrath after such a long time and being such a big Oddworld fan. I swear I've waited for the HD version to come nearly 3 years now and have been holding out to not play the original Xbox copy.

I found it a rather uneven experience actually and was both let down and thrilled in many spots. I also really don't have much fun with FPS games, but I did like the stealth elements in the first half of the game. I should probably post in some thread about this one soon as well, I have more thoughts.

It sounds like really lame reasoning but I think it's EVERYTHING I enjoy about the Half Life games. I guess the main thing that gets me is the atmosphere it creates, that and it's narrative without the need for cutscenes. Oh and the puzzles.

Good call on Alan Wake, I managed to finish it last year (although I'm thinking of picking it up again seeing as you can get it for £5 now, plus I'd like to play through the DLC) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Have you played the Fear games? (Specifically, the games Monolith developed, so the first and second games. Fear 2 is good on all platforms, the first game is ideally played on the PC.)

Or, instead staying with Remedy, the Max Payne games.

Yep! Finished all 3 Fear games too!

I finished Max Payne back in the day but I never finished the second one, might have to pick it up as an xbox original or from Steam.

Having left the game alone for a while ("ridiculous second boss is ridiculous"), I finally got around to completing Deus Ex: Human Revolution this week while I'm off work caring for my wife post-op.

I can see why it was well-regarded, given the amount of careful design and polish put into the gameplay systems as well as the environments and so forth. But, beyond the superficial stuff, the game wasn't exceptional in my opinion.

Even discounting the boss battle nonsense, DEHR felt repetitive and even a bit bland at times. I did mix up my approach to gameplay, specialising in hacking early on, plus sneaking around and using the silenced pistol a lot. I didn't really use the takedowns until much later in the game, once I felt more confident with how things worked; I'm not a big fan of stealth games usually, as I tend to be as clumsy in them as I am in real life. :violin:

I liked upgrading the guns, but didn't really enjoy firing them all that much; they felt a bit flat and disconnected. The stealth system was good - mainly, in my opinion, because the AI was excellent - but I didn't buy this only for the stealth element, as I enjoy gunplay and the hacking stuff more.

Speaking of hacking, once I got my head around how hacking worked, I enjoyed the sense of risk the hacking mini-game creates. I also liked upgrading Jenson and getting tactile feedback in-game with new or enhanced abilities.

Overall I'm glad I finished it, but it's not a Must-Play in my book. The music is fucking brilliant, mind, and the characterisations and voice acting were much better than I was expecting.

Good Lord, Stranger's Wrath was amazing!

I'm kinda glad I bought the HD version even though I had the Oddworld collection on Steam, not only does it look gorgeous, but I could swear it controls better too.

Any game where you weapon shoots critters to kill or incapacitate enemies is cool in my book!

At this point, i'm just going to assume you've played BioShock and the Deus Ex games. (And if those are ace, look into their precursor franchises, Thief and System Shock.)

If you like the Fear games, you should check out the Condemned games if you haven't already. They're first-person brawlers as opposed to shooters, but are awesome. (The first game is better, the second kinda loses the plot, but still has some real standout moments.)

^ In fact, most of Monolith's backlog could be considered awesome and in the vein of what you're looking for. (No One Lives Forever, Tron 2.0, etc.)

Alright, so bases are covered.

Timeshift? Super janky game, but i always really loved it.

Wolfenstein (2009)? Another Raven Software game very much like Singularity that Activision just unceremoniously dumped into the market with no fanfare.

Metro 2033? Super atmospheric, super hardcore, very much worth playing. (And if you dig it, it's time to go even further down that rabbit hole and play the Stalker games.)

It sounds like we a appreciate a lot of the same things in shooters, i'm not going to feel good until i can leave one good solid recommendation. Heh. :mock:

Yep! Finished all those buggers! I have particularly fond memories of belting through the latter two on our old P133 machine! (not so fond memories of having to create the boot disks though!)

I keep meaning to pick up the condemned games, I played through a fair chunk of the first on my house mates old xbox but I moved out before finishing it.

I'm a fairly large fan of Monolith's games, I think it was Shogo (I must try and get that working again) that got me started.

Timeshift? Super janky game, but i always really loved it.

My brother recently finished this (has very similar tastes to me) and has said pretty much the same things as yourself so I might pick this up (I've seen it for £2-3 used recently).

Wolfenstein (2009)? Another Raven Software game very much like Singularity that Activision just unceremoniously dumped into the market with no fanfare.

I think I let critics get in the way of Wolfenstein, it got panned didn't it? I've learnt over the last few years though that I seem to have opposite taste to most critics so I'll give that a shot too!

I simply adored Metro 2033, again it was the atmosphere that did it for me, guess it can't hurt to play through that again!

I picked up Stalker (Shadow of Chernobyl & Call of Pripyat) off of Steam a couple of years back but have unfortunately neglected them as I've spent very little time at my pc recently, I need to rectify this and dig in as I hear they'd be perfectly suited to me.

It sounds like we a appreciate a lot of the same things in shooters, i'm not going to feel good until i can leave one good solid recommendation. Heh. :mock:

I couldn't agree more, you can rest easy knowing I'm going to give Timeshift & Wolfenstein a stab!

How about some of the Starbreeze games? Namely, The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick. (With Riddick, just play Assault on Dark Athena, it contains a fully remade version of the first game in addition to a new campaign.)

I picked up both fairly cheap a while back, I'm yet to properly play the darkness but I have been enjoying Riddick (although I am finding it very repetitive and frustrating in places!).

The Riddick games are pretty fun when you don't have a gun, I liked the stealth parts the most!

People mentioned Singularity recently and said it was like Bioshock and boy were they right! They borrow the health and "mana" system, and the upgrade system is similar, even the ending is kinda similar, but that would be a bit of a strech.

I loved it when it was trying to tense and scary, with the ghosts and monsters but it wasn't that much fun once you have to spend several minutes killing Russians... When I got the minigun and used all my upgrades on that, the shooting became a joke! But it was great fun!
