Oh, good. I was going to see if I could dig you out an old videocard, but it certainly wouldn't have been anything as new as that.

Hah, thanks anyway.

Amazon told me my new card would be here today by 8pm. It's not here, yet. It's not quite 8pm, yet, either. But it's not here, yet. D:

Minor on the scale of things that people usually talk about on this thread, but one of my fish died today. He's was the largest in my tank and by far had the most personality, even if that personality was often grumpy and agressive. I even got him to eat out of my hand once in a while. It's kind of a relief as his behavior was keeping me from being able to buy any more fish of other types, but it also sucks too. Worst of it is that I'm pretty sure it's my fault for either the tank neglect that I just spent a couple of weeks cleaning up, or the 50% possibility I got a little bit of clothes washing detergent in the tanks from my hands when doing said cleaning up.

But you could have thrown one last "I'm not getting this deposit back" party!

Weird thing happened today. I get e-mailed from a student who I think is going to animation school in Vermont asking me how to make his website stand out so he'll get hired. I told him I pretty much have no clue because I haven't had a job for almost half a year so my site's not doing much. He wants to be a storyboard artist first and foremost, so I at least gave him tips on how to better show off his storyboards and convert them in to animatic form to really wow the people.

I did ask him how he found my website, considering I don't live anywhere near him and he said he was asking the local animation studio here, Powerhouse, for advice on how to make a website that'll make people want to hire you. Powerhouse sent them my website. Well that's fine and all except I they never expressed any interest in hiring me since I was fired from my last job, and the two times I've applied so far, I've gotten a canned response, with the second one having possibly an annoyed sentence added in to it. If they like my stuff, they should hire me! I've always wanted to work at Powerhouse since I've found out about them at my freshman in college days. :/

If they are on the verge of hiring me soon, this kind of messes up a thing where one of my former art directors is trying to get me in at a company she now works at, which is a casino game studio. I applied before at this studio d they said no based on the contents of my portfolio but she's trying to get maybe a specific art test that'll prove to them I adapt well. I'm not going to glaze over this even though it creates a dilemma, it is incredibly sweet of her! Thing is, if a situation comes up where I am hired at casino game studio and Powerhouse contacts me a month into the job, I'm leaving for Powerhouse. Reason for this is sometime in fall 2011, months after I was hired for the job I was fired from this year, Powerhouse contacted me to see if I wanted to interview. I turned it down because I had just gotten a new job and it seemed pretty snazzy for all intents and purposes and I also loved the people I worked with at the time. Well I'm still kicking myself for that as soon after that turned down interview, I saw complete ownership of the company shift and people that I enjoyed working with were either fired, laid off, quit, or just hung on like me, miserable. I just can't do that again if it means sacrificing the opportunity of a stable job in animation I might fit right in to compared to me not wanting to offend everyone by being a prick and quitting a job I just got hired for. I know that sort of thing severely wastes company time and money plus it reflects badly on me, but this time I have to come first.

Maybe the student can give you a name of the person they asked, so you can e-mail them to say "thanks for recommending my site" and cultivate someone ~~on the inside~~

Yeah, that's what I feel like. Syn, it's fully possible that there is one or more person in the company who wanted you and is sending out your website either because they like it or because they want more applicants to show up with your spread of credentials in order to make a point to someone in upper management.

Speaking from someone pretty deep in my own workplace's politics by now, it's really weird to discover who fought for my admittance based on my application and who fought against it based on their assumptions.

Ah, I did find out his name, it was one of the the office managers that e-mailed me before so I have his direct e-mail. It seems like a good idea, I'm just scared I'll come off as obnoxious and too forward. I'll try to psyche myself up tomorrow and take your advice!

I should probably note I have had conversations multiple times with at least 3 people at this company through events or friends of friends, and kind of nudged them when I lost my job, but I'm not that close so I didn't nudge them too hard. I had lunch with the CEO before when I was with my last job when they did some outsourcing animation work they were submitting to me to check, but it was more led by another former art director and producer, so I was kind of awkwardly silent most of that lunch, just listening. I did speak to him another occasion about the Epic Mickey cutscenes after an IGDA presentation even before that, but I don't think he remembered me, so I didn't want to make it even more awkward. We're Facebook buddies, but I think it's the type of buddy where he posts stuff and just prefers a like or comment rather than someone actively following the feeds of others. I did mention a lot of these things in my original cover letter for whatever it was worth. If the canned e-mails are to be believed they have always liked my stuff, but haven't had a spot open recently. I never know though because standard e-mail responses usually never mean worse than what they actually say.

I'm worried I nudged my Dallas contact just a bit too much. Last email I got from him seemed a little annoyed that I asked for news again. I waited a week with no news! The news is once again, "We still don't know." This is not news I handle well. A yes would be fantastic. A no would be a definitive answer. ARGH. X:

My video card is now with the carrier and has left the facility for delivery. ON THE TRUCK!

Nah, just frame it as a thankyou note, then mention that if anything's upcoming you're available and still very interested etc.

Oh man. I woke up early and spent six and a half hours waiting for the mail today because I knew I had two packages heading my way. I took a five minute break around four o'clock and ended up almost missing the deliveryman. Lucky!

For those curious, they were a Pokémon strategy guide that I had preordered a while back and a plushie that SecretAsianMan sent me for my b-day next week.

I drew an AR marker and used my 3DS so I could take a picture of big Sewaddle hangin' out with little Sewaddle.

It's not bad to ask for news about once or twice a week. It shows you are enthusiastic for the position.

I'm aware. But when his response is terse and sounds annoyed, I grow wary.

He was a fire red dwarf gourami. I don't have any pictures on me at the moment, but he looked similar to http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=830+882+974&pcatid=974

That's a very pretty looking fish :)

We had a tank when I was a kid, but its denizens were mostly smaller tetras, neon and glowlight tetras if recall correctly. I would always advise my parents to get the most colorfull and "coolest" ones. Alas, they never listened.

@Twig: He might just be having a bad day.

thanks! :)

What's wrong with the engine?

The timing belt snapped, so half of the pistons and valves need replaced aswell as the timing belt

Today I learned that timing-chains are better than timing-belts. I'll have to consider that when buying cars.
