Armchair General Posted February 25, 2012 I hate to be that guy, but I detest rape jokes. It's a subject that is, for me, not humourous in the least. The way it is used on the internet is appalling and brings to mind an immature, pubescent schoolboy with all that entails. The twats in Yufster's thread almost certainly laugh at rape jokes. We are better than this. (consider yourself told )
Thompson Posted February 25, 2012 My father finds jokes about death just as distasteful as you find rape jokes, does that mean we should all stop making jokes about death? No. There's a difference between hate speech/defamation/misogyny and humor. Sorry, but if you want to limit free speech and artist freedom, I just can't follow you on that. For the record, I don't like rape jokes, I simply think people should be allowed to make them if they want to.

Thyroid Posted February 25, 2012 I hate to be that guy, but I detest rape jokes. It's a subject that is, for me, not humourous in the least. I hate them too. I used to teach orphaned children English back in 2006, but some of those kids had parents who were still alive - they were just abusive, so the government decided to take the kids to therapy and then have them live with the orphaned kids. The experience is a changing one. That said, I can still laugh at rape jokes if they're particularly funny, but I wouldn't tell any myself and I do disapprove of them. (consider yourself told ) All right! It was just the one time, though.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted February 25, 2012 My father finds jokes about death just as distasteful as you find rape jokes, does that mean we should all stop making jokes about death? Sorry, but if you want to limit free speech and artist freedom, I just can't follow you on that. For the record, I don't like rape jokes, I simply think people should be allowed to make them if they want to. Thompson you are very wrong and should be quiet. Here's why: 1. Your father is not part of this community. Those who are here must co-exist. 2. Death is not avoidable. Murder is. Jokes about murder are distasteful. Jokes about death to the recently bereaved are also distasteful. See point 1. 3. Rape "jokes" are misogynist. They're nearly always made by men to other men. The subtext is that rape (nearly always targeted at women) is funny. The fact that this one was about Kroms does not excuse this. Consider Speedy's offensive "joke" to his female friend that he just couldn't help but say... I wonder how many scary men he's made "jokes" like that to? Something tells me he somehow manages not to threaten murder and rape to people he feels physically inferior to. 4. There is no difference between hate speech and humour. It's not exactly surprisingly that it's the one Australian member of the forum who doesn't get that, though. (Did you see what I did there? I made a joke... so it's not offensive, right?) 5. Don't bring "freedom of speech" into a conversation like this. It isn't remotely relevant. Try posting images of hardcore porn here and see how far your "artistic freedom" gets you. On the other hand, gallows humor is well, it's what it is. There are limits however. And now before this gets serious, I'm out.
Thyroid Posted February 25, 2012 Yeesh guys. Chill. I'll delete the stupid joke, even though I put a disclaimer on there. Funny how this started with me pumping my fist about a girl, though.
shammack Posted February 25, 2012 Yeah, you'd think the forum for the podcast that originated the phrase "rape you through a hole" would keep it a little classier.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted February 25, 2012 Sorry, but I wasn't about to watch my primary online community descend into "rape jokes are funny" territory without putting up a fight first. The same goes for "racism is funny" or "homophobia is funny" or "child pornography is kool!". I'm a guy. I know what we can be like when we're with our close friends. You cross plenty of lines, but only because you KNOW that nobody is going to be offended. (And, to be honest, I'm sure women are the same.) This is a public forum, and there are plenty of people here who would sooner leave this community than even let people know they've been offended. Which is a sad thing to me. If this community is turning into "Unilads", then I'll leave, but I've been here long enough to put up a fight for what I believe in first. Thompson's post was one of epic fail. Let's not forget that he literally made the argument that racists jokes aren't racist because they're jokes. As I say, if that's a belief that's becoming acceptable to this community, then I'll soon be on my merry way. On a side note: I am having a pretty awful day, and while I feel like I stand by what I write, it is coming from an unhappy chappy. I went to see my doctor (or rather "a" doctor) and found myself not being taken seriously. It's true what they say: There are doctors who look for easy answers, and when they can't find them, they blame the patient. And there are doctors who take the lack of easy answers and turn them into a challenge they want to solve. I need to find a doctor who believes me, rather than dismisses me. *sigh*
Roderick Posted February 25, 2012 (edited) Sorry to hear about your encounter with a Dr. Spaceman, Thunder. Now about the rape jokes. Let's for the moment envision a reality where this forum is still populated with reasonable, consenting adults who have well over seven years of history with each other and also know that we are prone to every sort of humor, from silly sarcasm to ironic crassness and everything in between. Good, now we can talk to each other. What makes any comment or joke inappropriate or bad is context and intention. You hit the nail on the head, Thunder, when you said that you can say these sort of things to friends. I consider you my friends. You are all people I hold close to my heart and as a result of that I feel at liberty to, say, invite everyone to rape Kroms. Knowing that this proposition is so ludicrous both in and of itself and as a response to the situation of Kroms finding love, that no one in their right mind would take it seriously as a misogynist rape joke. If I said this to a stranger, it would indeed be appalling. I am very careful with making anything a taboo or put a moratorium on humor. Again, context matters. If I for instance knew that Kroms had been raped at some point, I would not have made the joke. Neither would the joke have been funny if I had meant it maliciously. But the point here, the joke, wasn't the rape. It was the shock and awe it induced, the deliberate provocation with a very negative subject. Rest at ease: this type of joke very quickly loses its flavor if repeated too often, since it hinges on the surprise effect. Damn you for making me explain comedy. Also, now that I know that a few folks here have a real issue with it (probably (hopefully!) not personally, but vicariously), I'll be more careful with it. After all, there's no sense to making a joke if nobody's laughing. Edited February 25, 2012 by Rodi
subbes Posted February 25, 2012 I've not yet been a victim of rape* but I do have chums that have been and rape jokes make me uncomfortable. The thing is, they make me uncomfortable and yet I laugh at the funny ones. Then I second-guess myself about why I laughed and whether this makes me a bad person and usually determine that yes, it does. And then I go and cheer myself up with some bread or a biscuit. So: please stop making rape jokes or consider reducing the number you make, because rape jokes are making me fat. * I say it this way because given the numbers, there's a non-infinitesimal chance that I may yet be a victim oh, jesus, that's a scary thought
ThunderPeel2001 Posted February 25, 2012 You make good points, Rodi. Your comment was obviously absurd, but then things started snowballing, and then it got serious. I believe toblix and subbes were making half-ironic/half-serious statements on how they don't really think it's a fitting subject for humour. The problem with this sort of "I went there!" humour is that this isn't a private community, it's completely open to the public. Some of us have known each other for years. Some are completely new. But even those of us who have been here for years won't know our history, and I hate to being everyone down, but... You can be pretty sure that there are people reading this thread who have experience with rape. Edit: And there you go!
Roderick Posted February 25, 2012 Look, guys, I don't give a shit about what you think and how many arguments you throw at me. The fact of the matter is that I'm just not going to make a whole lot of rape jokes anymore and you'll just have to live with that.
subbes Posted February 25, 2012 HOWEVER if you do want to make rape jokes, go ahead. Just know that somewhere I will be shoving crisps into my face with both hands while tears roll silently down my bulging cheeks. (As I think we covered in the Feminism thread aeons ago, I am a veteran of the Metafilter Boyzone Threads and so my instinctual response to such a topic is a glib one-liner.)
