Brütal Legend overload...!

Recommended Posts

Wait. Am I correct in my understanding that the RTS gameplay the main focus of the story mode?

Doesn't that sort of undermine the badass-ness of it?

Doesn't that make the demo kind of insincere?

Is it awesome anyway?

Tell me when you find out.

Yeah, I just watched the bonus round footage where they discuss it and that is what they make it sound like, which I was also surprised by. I thought most of the game would be like the demo, hack and slash and driving. I have no doubt I'll still enjoy it though, guess we'll find out how much of the game is the RTS part soon.

Two days away from Brutal Day and I'm probably not going to be able to afford a PS3 for a good while yet. Or, at least, I can afford it now but will have a tough time justifying my purchase to concerned observers when I'm officially a poor struggling student.

Have fun playing the game; I'm going to banish myself from this thread until I don't care about spoilers any more.

Yeah, I know what you mean... Although any spoilers should be

in spoiler tags

, there's going to be a lot of hype. But at the same time, enjoying the game at the same time as my fellow Thumbs will probably be good fun (provided I can find the time to keep up -- plus I don't want to rush the game).

I can't believe we're only days away from a new Tim Schafer game!

I'm also in Thorn's position of not being able to purchase a PS3. Hopefully a PC edition will come out soon.

I am not so hopeful. We'd have heard about it long before now.

Plus, I would probably have had to pay for a computer upgrade.

Oh, wait. What am I still doing here?

After hearing the thumbs compare the mp as pikminesq and knowing thats what the full game will turn into eventually, I really wanted to check this out on mp; but I'm one of those idealists(I'm cheap) that doesn't want to pay for 360 service when I jsut want to play a few games every now and then.... that and I hear xboxlives playerbase is pretty horrific (I have a story about fight night 3 one day, it wasn't pleasent)

Anyway, decided to take the plunge on the ps3 since uncharted 2 is coming out. probably wont pick it up until the end of the week, but can't wait, the presentation of the demo was really slick. I haven't been following the game as it was a must buy for a shaffer product anyway; I just kind of expected psychonaughts level of polish(which was a bit rough) but was blown away with how smooth it felt.

My 360 has kind of been making me hate it lately, with the tiny 20GB hard drive issue finally becoming too irritating to deal with. As such, I'm leaning heavily towards picking this up for PS3. On the other hand, I don't want to be depriving myself of any Grand Thumb Auto style awesomeness. I'm going to be buying this game on the way to work tonight. Help me out here: What's my format?

I think I'll be getting this on Friday (Xbox 360). Does this mean there's a possibility of some Brutal Thumbs in the future? \m/

Also, I know I shouldn't prattle about a (seemingly idiotic) journalist who specialises in grand sweeping statements and petty, badly-concieved features, but this Guardian article deemed Brutal Legend "a thoroughly generic video game".

Wow... Destuctoid gave it a 6.... Didn't they give games they claim are horrible and deserve to die a more or less equal score?

They are basically saying it's as bad as Sonic 2006, which isn't bad, except people don't know what a bad game is lately and an OK game is worse than death nowadays...:oldman:

as much as I like destructoid, their reviews are not great, or even good, better than IGN still.

I think ALL reviewers are big babies... A food critic who has never tasted anything that's actually bad thinks OK food is terrible, the same thing applies to game reviewers!

WATCHING JAMES THE AVGN DOESN'T COUNT! You have to PLAY the bad game!

.... Ok... I don't want to start this whole "You can't really laugh until you've cried" rant now... Since I know I'm probably the only one cares about it...;(

6/10 eh? That's a shame, as I was hoping it would be shining much more in the eyes of reviewers' than Psychonauts as well as being a better designed action game than the former. Maybe better reviews will come in?

The demo was fun for me, although I did feel like maybe it would have been better to play a demo of a part of the game that wasn't the beginning, but I still thought it was great. I could see how the reviewer at Destructoid said technical and graphical glitches kept taking him out of the writing, but I have the feeling it wouldn't bother me so much, even though I kept noticing everyone's hair going through their shoulders in the demo.

I couldn't care less about the graphical stuff but I can see the other reasons the reviewer gave for the (comparatively) low score.

I am BROKE at the worst time of year for someone who likes to play video games, but I will definitely grab this game in a few weeks.

I feel like I can't really judge the reviewer's judgment on the gameplay since I felt like I haven't experienced what I've heard is to come (by the Idle podcasters and elsewhere) at all by playing the demo. What I played in the demo I enjoyed, even though it was pretty simplistic and there was nothing I haven't seen before in a game. I did understand it was the beginning of the game, but I had no qualms and was enjoying myself.

But if it is a nice welcome mish mash of gameplay styles presented similar to the way Beyond Good and Evil mixed a few different genre styles into one satisfying game (Pretty much exactly how Chris Remo cited it on one of the recent podcasts), then it should be a great combination for me. I'm predisposed to love Tim Schafer anyway though.

Ok, I think I can now confirm that Ormagoden put Tim Shafer on this earth to make games for me and people like me.

Damn, I haven't had this much fun since, well, probably psychonaughts, but theres just so much extra stuff to do in this I'm blown away happy.

Also, fyi to anyone who picks up a Ps3, it comes with video hook ups that my snes came with, so you may want to purchase an hdmi cable while your there (I was unaware of this and my eyes are kind of bleeding right now)

I've been playing Brütal Legend for a couple of days (local toy store was selling it before the street date, bless the rock gods!), and it kicks major ass. Man, it's fun!

The crazy thing is, my expectations weren't even high. I was thinking it was going to be a fun game and nothing more. Maybe because I'm not particularly a metal lover. But the game proved exhilirating from the very start. I think one of the main things that makes me love it is the presentation. From the logos (,,Double Fiiiiiiiiine!") to the Jack Black intro, to the menu (fucking gorgeous!). And this is the pervading theme in the excellence of Brütal Legend, in my opinion. The gameplay is a jack of all trades, borrowing from GTA, Zelda, Guitar Hero, Batallion Wars, Assassin's Creed. And taken on its own, these elements fare from good to bland. But the excellent, rich presentation; the heavy metal sauce that ties it together; the attention to detail and the sheer amount of fun exuded from every model and texture, make it rise far above the mere sum of its parts.

I wasn't expecting it at all, but Double Fine has done it again. Can't say the final word yet of course, but so far it's fantastic. I mean BRÜTAL!!

(PS. I'm about 4-5 hours in and so far the RTS component hasn't been overshadowing the rest at all. I hope it stays that way.)

Yeah so far I think the overall presentation really helps the overall experiance, the menus, the music, the story slide shows, everything really. Time to get nit picky though, but since everything on the presentation feels polished I just wished they could have done something about the loading/hard cuts between gameplay and cinematic. I think this was something in psychonaughts and a lot of games, but even just a simple fade in and out like gta would have helped the flow, but when your playing and it just cuts to black for half a second and goes to a cinematic it just feels sloppy.

Also, not too far into it, since Ive just been tooling around in the car exploring(which there is a lot of stuff to explore and unlock so far) but, and this may happen later, was hoping for a little more ambient characters(again from psychonaughts) where there are non hostiles just roaming around doing stuff and you could talk to them. The headbangers seem to only have one mission right now and while awesome, aren't distinct characters... but I'm pretty early into the story so who knows.

Yeah I'm only a couple main missions in but spent most the night exploring the first area of the map. Even if the exploration was all there was to the game, I'd love it. I'm blown away by the world design of this game. There is so much to look and marvel at... every nook and cranny oozes with creativity. And although all the heavy metal iconography is familiar, it's not straight replicas. It feels inspired rather than lifted.

This is the first open world game where I really don't mind looking around for 120 collectibles (at least not so far). Every tree, hill, monument, sky tone, and weather effect really really impresses me.
