The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

But this is what is happening in rap right now that is destroying me.

Well, that certainly takes the concept of a cover a bit literally.

If you liked Outkast's early stuff, you owe it to yourself to check out more stuff by Organized Noize and The Dungeon Family. Goodie Mob's early records are almost as good as Outkast's (and you get to hear Cee-Lo before he sold his soul for pop hits!), to say nothing of

and Witchdoctor's album A S.W.A.T. Healin' Ritual. They were on fire the second half of the 90's, and still manage to produce some amazing stuff from time to time. In more recent years, Killer Mike has been the biggest attraction. Everyone went nuts over R.A.P. Music but the I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind series and his debut Monster were really amazing too. Killer Mike, man. If you like Outkast you already know. And if you don't know, now you know.

Personally, Stankonia feels a little shallow compared to Aquemini, and I prefer the more straight-ahead (but still certainly funk and psych inspired) early albums to Stankonia's intense wackiness. I think Big Boi and Andre were so great together because they forced each other out of their comfort zones. 3000 couldn't go off the deep end on songs that were really about something and Big Boi couldn't rest on his gangster laurels when stacked up against a lyricist as inventive as 3000. Stankonia honestly already feels like two solo albums to me, because Big Boi feels kind of out of place on some of those crazier tracks and 3000 is just in his own world. Production-wise it's often fascinating, but those guys were so good at RAPPING, and rapping with each other, that the more divided approach kind of bums me out. Not a bad album by any stretch, but it's not one I find myself returning to.

And this is the best Outkast song of all time. Accept no substitutes.

"Now who else wanna fuck with Hollywood Court?"

I like a lot about what you said here, but I disagree that Andre went too far on Stankonia. The closing song on that record is so perfectly weird. That baseline! It has the power to impregnate!

That said, I agree that their prior two records are five star.

Also, speaking of Killer Mike, he and El-P are releasing at tape soon. Pretty pumped. Crazy how many great records those two have between them.

Ride (Tiesto Remix): 96 times played on iTunes. Go listen to that song, then listen to it 5 more times since a lot of music sucks the first time you hear it. That song has affected me in a way no other song has.

Oops, now all I can listen to is Southern rap of the late 90's/early 00's. Thanks Ernst!

Anyone else a fan of Mystikal? I'm kind of convinced that this the best musical response to 9/11 that ever happened (sorry Bruce!).

"I know that they made you feel strange huh

You was right in the middle complainin' and forgot what you was cryin'bout
It could be you time and it might be
You can't do nothing about it, its God will thats just how life be
One day it hit 'cha then its gone
And I'm serious and you ain't never even gonna feel it until it hit home
That's when the pain run sharper and deeper
You ain't eat that's when the days feel slow and long
I know you miss 'em so it's time to uplift 'em
Try to pick the pieces up and find a way to drive on"

There's also the meta-layer of Mystikal's history with New Orleans bounce music, but that is some deep rap nerd shit.

Mystikal is the only rapper to do a James Brown rap song and actually get it right. Guy has incredible skill, he just needs to keep doing this and less of that awful stuff that put him in jail:

Seriously, this is one of my favourite tracks from last year. That delivery is incredible. He totally owns every line, and doesn't rest for one minute, switching up his flow constantly. And that beat!

It's a really amazing song. Especially when he accurately predicts that the live instruments mean that white people will like that song. "I'd like to get my hands on his acapellas" is a really really funny rapper-doing-white-person line.

I saw them in Berlin and they seemed so very tired. Not a good concert. Maybe you don't miss much by not seeing them live.

(Still, great music. And yes, I just wanted to brag a bit. Hope you get another chance to see them [and prove my experience wrong].)

The Gap Band are maybe the most underrated group ever. That little laugh before the drums on You Dropped a Bomb On Me kick in is so perfect.

This stuff is the shit, its worth a listen just for the album name alone

The Voices – From The Human Forest Create A Fuge Of Imaginary Rain

Abandoning the “grr Satan” angle altogether, and focussing on the reality of humankind’s capacity for ignorance, self-obsession, lust and violence makes Voices’ debut album a confident first step on a newer, darker path.

Blackened Death metal, strippers and strobe lights. Seriously what more do you need :hypnotoad:

Just a reminder that in 2006, the director of Insane Clown Posse's film somehow managed to convince Jerry Only of The Misfits, Dez Cadena of Black Flag, Ivan Julian of The Voidoids, and Marky Ramone of The Ramones to form a supergroup with him and record an album that included a Christmas song, that folk song from O Brother Where Art Thou, and the Sailor Moon theme. The music industry is weird.

Hey, Kevin Parker from Tame Impala actually had his hand in another record last year, and it might be better than his day job. Wonderful, melodic, dreamy French pop. It's music to walk home to after a big day at work to make you realise that the day isn't over. It sounds like falling in love.

This is the best song on the record:

However, I like this video, so I will post it as well:
