Quake Zero: Free Browse-Quake 3

Recommended Posts

It was just announced at QuakeCon. I kinda like the idea of it being on browsers, giving you access to it wherever you like..

Hope it doesn't run like shit, though.

Yeah, it's a great idea. I also like it very much that they released their entire catalog on steam. And that you can buy it all for $62,95. I'm very temted to buy that mega pack...

Wait... how entire is entire here? I never played RTCW, and I really want to. Is this like, every id game out there? If so, where's my credit card?

I notice that Heretic II is absent. That game was hilarious in multiplayer: you could lop the opponents arms off and then just wait for them to bleed to death. Or you could use the "turn them into a chicken" spell, with a 1 in 100 chance that they turn into a giant 15ft superstrong Chicken of Doom.

Quake Zero is a super idea. I also love how innovative it is from a business perspective. They failed to trump Quake 3's online popularity with Quake 4, and so to move their franchise forward, they're going for something truly radical.

I can't imagine playing Q3 in a browser would be much fun. Wouldn't you most likely be smeared by people playing the real thing?

Presumably it will be exactly the same as playing Quake 3 in windowed mode, no?

I don't get it.

Quake Zero will be Quake 3 in a browser?

So a 3D realtime game? So it will be a java applet or something?

that's nothing like Quake3, besides, it's another 3rd party browser plugin: Shockwave

they might as well release a Quake3engine browser plugin

It's John Carmack. You don't think he can code something that runs awesome on a browser?

canvas doesn't allow texture mapping on walls, ceilings or floors.

not even close to wolfenstein 3d

* I never said it was possible to do real texturing with canvas. :)

* Wolfenstein also doesn't have textured ceiling and floor

* There is demo with textures

* I only wanted to point out something done without plugins

* Nobody should argue with bullet points. It's ridiculous :getmecoat

omg.. that's an awful way to render textures.

for each wall segment the image is drawn like 200 times with various offsets

Here, here; he seems to be on a mission to debunk the idea that "lesser" platforms (i.e. mobile, web) mean visually crap games. Doom RPG and Orcs & Elves both look fantastic, all things considered, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotten something browser-based singing, too.

I reckon it'll be Java-based as well, mind. I doubt he'd bother doing all that research into JME and then ignore Java when it came to doing something online. Java's much more comprehensive in terms of networking (therefore multiplayer) than Shockwave could ever hope to be.

Plus Java can utilise the OpenGL libraries, so we should see something quite pretty. I'm excited.

Not even John Carmack could make Java run Quake 3 in a browser. No fucking way.

That's not what I said at all.

What I said was: the game could look significantly better than other browser-based 3D efforts. Not that it would be "Quake 3 in a window".

What? I agree that it could be better than say, a Shockwave-powered effort. But I don't agree Java could ever handle it.
