Capcom announces Monkey Island Wii... kidding.

Recommended Posts

Capcom has announced they're working on an exclusive Wii title called Treasure Island Z. The few screenshots posted seem to indicate a point 'n click interface, puzzles and treasures. So, doesn't that sound an awful lot like an adventure game?

And best of all, featuring pirates!

I can't be the only one that saw that shot of the snake and thought "go for the Ipecac!"

...right? :getmecoat

Rather than start another not-yet-released Wii adventure game thread, I figured this'd be a good a place as any to point out this interview with the guys behind Hotel Dusk and Another Code.

http://www.cubed3.com/news/7874/1/Cing_Talks_Hotel_Dusk,_Another_Code_for_Wii_&_DS,_Plus_More

TM: I think that the innovative Wii interface and the adventure genre fit well together. I believe we will be able to provide an unprecedented adventure if Another Code and Hotel Dusk are realised on Wii.

...

TM: We feel that some ideas are important for DS, while others are important for Wii. Therefore, we think that there should be game styles specialised for each piece of hardware. I think there will be a possibility of the games appearing if something new can be brought to the table in the worlds of Hotel Dusk or Another Code. And at that time, this is the kind of challenge we will be excited about.

I've only played about an hour of Hotel Dusk (and will hopefully get that fucking wire hanger off the wall soon), but I've liked it this far (the music has been off most of the time). I know others here have enjoyed the games...

And it's out today (Wed)! In the US. Or so I hear. It's been getting good buzz—I'll probably pick it up tonight. Anyone tried it yet?

Tried it by 2 am on it's release day?

I have an exam tomorrow evening, but on the way home I should actually be able to pass by an EB just before it closes. I'm thinking this may be purchased then, though I have no idea when I'll find the time to play it.

:waluigi:

Wasn't sure if it was in stores Tuesday or Wednesday, and figured I'd go ahead and bump the dusty thread.

Well, I've been playing it tonight and after a bit of a tedious intro/tutorial sequence (kind of typical of most Japanese games, especially Capcom -- I'm looking at you Okami :shifty: ) I'm finally in the game proper and after two levels I'm liking it a lot!

Already fell victim to insta-death too, for all you adventure gaming masochists :deranged:

And I like how each level is it's own thing since it does away (at least, so far) with the thing I hate about adventure games, keeping track of items/things/people half-way across the map and then fetching things to them. It's nicely contained and it's really about the PUZZLES and so far they've made clever use of the remote. For example, this is REALLY EARLY but I'll save spoilers

you have to stack three things on top of each other. I was doing it right but couldn't figure out why it wasn't going. Then it dawned on me. I was placing the things UPSIDE DOWN so I grabbed the item and rotated the remote before placing it right side up

Also, it does seem to draw a lot of "inspiration" from Wind Waker... but in a good way. Maybe this thread deserves a clearer title (or a new thread altogether?).

OK, so I'm playing it right now. (well, not RIGHT right now, but you know...) Really good. First time I got stuck was on the first boss when

I didn't think to spin that damned batbrella around

but overall there's nothing so far that a minute or so of looking at the environment won't solve if you remember that the objects you're holding change as you turn the wiimote. Love the style, too. The cannibals are just too bloody cute. Even when they're eating soup out of skulls you have to love them.

The items are brilliant. Turning random creatures in the environment into tools is a great idea. The Frog Bomb had me giggling for a minute or so before I could get back to the game. Also, the idea to make you play the wiimote like a flute (and in order to get to all the buttons, you pretty much have to hold it that way too) is genius. Just a delightful game so far and although I'm dying more than I'd expect, they treat death in such a way that it's not so bad. Definitely recommended.

Did you play that little music box mini-game (with the Ghosts and Goblins music? I suck ass at it). And there's all sorts of little Capcom items to find and so on. Just a finely crafted game with a stupid title. More people should be playing it. ESPECIALLY THE PEOPLE HERE (except you poor sods in Europe that can't cause it's not out. Sorry.)

Confession: I wouldn't know as I've never played Ghosts n' Goblins. Sorry.

But yeah, everyone get it. Whenever you can, anyway.

I was going to ask "How is it?", but I guess that everyone answered my question, multiple times. Can't wait for it to reach Australia, perhaps in 21XX.

I'm trying my best to get excited about this game. So far the videos I have seen haven't helped..

The thing that I dislike the most is the way the game seems to be constantly trying to reward (didn't find one with a stick) you for you actions. This may sounds strange, but I actually loved the way Monkey Island didn't really reward you for most of your achievements (like how the pirates in the first game, if I remember correctly, didn't seem at all interested when you told them you had completed one of the trials they gave you earlier). I don't want to receive some kind of rubber-chicken-with-a-pulley-in-the-middle fanfare every time I pick something up; knowing that it will likely help me reach my goal is enough.

Monkey Island made me feel like I'm capable of making my own decisions and do the right thing, whereas Zack and Wiki would likely make me feel more like a dog waiting to be constantly rewarded. I know it's not fair to say this based on gameplay videos alone. Plus, I might be exaggerating this a bit..

The main character doesn't seem very interesting to me either, and the game itself borders on over-cuteness.

However, I really hope I'm wrong about everything I just said because I would love to love this game.

I've never been that excited about the game. The impression I've always had was that it'd be extremely linear, moving from one small area to the next, and be mostly comprised of relatively uninteresting, simplistic "puzzles". Please tell me if I'm mistaken, as I'd love to be.

Actually, the puzzles can be quite tricky. The first one of the second tier had me scratching my head for about 20 minutes. Nappi, I do agree that the fanfare is the worst part of the game. As you mentioned, being told "You got the STICK!!!!" isn't really something I need to hear that enthusiastically. It serves something of a purpose in that you can only hold one item at once, making it nice to know what exactly it is that you have, and the fanfare only plays the first time you pick it up, so it's not so bad, really.

Moos, sorry to disappoint, but it really is much more of a puzzle game than an adventure game. If it helps, the path branches a bit, allowing you to tackle the different puzzles in a stage in your own order. Beating the first puzzle opens up two, etc. Given how much I like Exit though, the fact that this game is more "Exit with a pirate-y plot, cool items, and a ton of awesome style" (not to say Exit's style wasn't awesome) than "Monkey Island Wii" doesn't really bother me. I like puzzle levels like this, so the game appeals.

As for over-cutesy, I guess it depends on your threshold. As for me, all I thought was "Pirate bunnies! HELL YES!" To each their own, right?

You bastard. EB says I can't get No More Heroes until Friday. I'd go look somewhere else, but I have a gift certificate to blow.

A friend of mine bought Zack & Wiki this weekend and it looked totally awesome. I'm getting this someday, as soon as I've played all the other games on The List =)
