Movie/TV recommendations

I see The Amazing Screw-On Head was already discussed here before I came back.

Reminded because I just got the DVD of the pilot from ebay, and it is excellent. It's worth seeing the art in such a non-youtube kind of way.

Unfortunately, Mignola confirmed last November that Sci-Fi decided not to commission a series :(

Also, I miss your Emperor Zombie avatar Rodi

It can't be helped. Only one cool tv villain at a time, alas dear sir!

But perhaps one, fine, inconspicuous day...

Fucking hell, that's an absolute travesty. Someone needs shooting for that - what a miserable ending for such a promising project! :\

just saw No Country For Old Men

Best Coens' film since Fargo. MAYBE EVEN BETTER. That is all.

I read the book, it'd be hard not to make a good movie adaption.

Shoot 'Em Up had the best sex/violent gunfight scene I've seen in a long time. That's right. At the same time.

Some friends of mine went to the sneak preview for it and were raving about it. I'll probably be heading to see it next day off I get. Seems like it'll be another of those movies that I'll buy the DVD of and watch whenever I don't feel like grabbing one of the art films from my collection, joining Smokin' Aces and Starship Troppers.

I'd like to recommend that everyone in the UK check out the trailer for, and look forward to, The Peter Serafinowicz Show.

I worked on it, and it's shaping up to be brilliant.

What is the title of the song from the first trailer? I know that song. In fact I think I have it on my HDD somewhere. But for the life of me I can't figure out the name :/

It's DJ Shadow, according to Peter.

Any thoughts on the trailer? A lot of people have been unimpressed by it, possibly because it doesn't bring the funny. It's supposed to give a general vibe more than that...

Oooh, I want to see 3:10 to Yuma.

I watched Geddo Senkai. It was OK. Lacked the depth of previous Ghibli movies though, guess Miyazaki junior is still learning. The first act was great and the closest to the source material. The third act was a bit meh and deviated the most. I still pray that one day a faithful adaptation of Earthsea will be made, as there are so many amazing scenes in those books that scripwriters just seem to ignore.

I also watched The Host. I liked it, although it's pretty odd. The whole film feels (appropriately) slippery - one moment it's a genuinely scary horror movie, next it's a parody of horror movies, next moment it's an full-out off-beat comedy with political satire. And then it scares you again.

Why hasn't Iron Man been mentioned here yet? The first trailer is out, though I can't find the link so fast.

I was never really into Iron Man, until my friend Tom pushed a few of the more recent mini-series onto me and I was very much intruiged by the character. Also his appearances in Civil War and awesome series like Earth X really made Iron Man become one of my favourite characters in the Marvel universe.

I don't know how the movie will turn out, but what I especially like is how Iron Man is always flirting with really unheroic notions of narcism, corporate greed and other stuff. There's a sense that Tony Stark is a bit of a shady guy himself. Love it. I guess in the movie that will be shown most by his pre-superhero time, when he's selling arms et cetera.

Robert Downey Jr. is just fantastic as Stark, at least in the trailer. The film has lots of potential. I don't really know much about Iron Man, though. I think I've read one comic book, but I remember liking that.

I just saw Casino Royale for the second time and liked it a lot better now that I was already familiar with the atmosphere of the movie. For some completely outrageous reason I didn't like the opening animation a whole lot the first time, but now I see I must have been mad. It's brilliant. The rotoscoped vector animations of fighting people, the fractal-esque landscapes, the poker motif... fucking brilliant. I am an idiot.

Just saw Eastern Promises last night, which was half great, half meh. It left me with the same feeling as History of Violence, a sense of Cronenberg doing something interesting for the first half and then doing the exact opposite the rest of the movie.

Seriously don't understand why they're getting such high-praises everywhere.

I liked Planet Terror. Kind of surprising, I'm not a fan of Rodriguez. Lost some steam toward the end, but all in all a fun experience.

Yesterday evening I saw The Prestige. Wow... that really lodges itself in your brain, doesn't it? Masterful build-up of suspense and an intricately woven plot. I thought the movie didn't end as well as it could have, cinematographically spoken (scene-wise, not plotwise), but apart from that, truly excellent.

And to think this was a bit of an 'aside' for in between the two Batman movies =D

I really liked The Prestige. Partially because Nikolai Tesla and his strange (but not quite that strange) experiments have always intrigued me. I agree that the ending could have been a bit better, though.

I should probably watch it again some day. The first time was in the army on a small laptop. Hardly an optimal viewing experience.

I just can't stop thinking about how horrifying and mesmerizing it is that Danton sacrificed himself a hundred times in that death trap just for an illusion. Fantastic. Also, great Hitchcockian tricks were used to elevate tension almost unbearably at times. The doves, man, think of the doves!

It's possibly the best film I've seen this year I think - great stuff.

Anyone seen Stardust yet? I had free tickets to a preview screening a good few weeks ago but couldn't make it at the last minute.

Yeah, I liked Stardust. It's a bit twee, but it has such charm that I really didn't mind. Like the reviews say, it's great for a date movie.

Also Claire Danes :tup::eyebrow:

It certainly looked like the sort of simple, good fun movie Mrs. V. loves (Pirates of the Caribbean is probably her favourite film) so I was hoping I'd have been able to take her out to the preview as a surprise. Plans were duly squashed due to a bloody parents evening at 6-flippin-pm on a week night. And I work a good hour's commute from home (where the school is less than a mile from). :(

Anyway, thanks for the confirmation, Dan. I'll definitely make a point of seeking it our ASAP.

Just came back from Stardust. Very nice movie. At one point a standard fairytale, but at the same time made with so much zest and knowledge of the material. What's also apparent is that everyone loved playing in it; palpable enthusiasm.

It also confirmed that I have to get one of those Victorian coats soon. They're awesome, and snazzy.
